Why is there such an abdundance of shooters for GBA? It's practicly made for these types of games, yet we see very few of them, and even less worthwhile ones. The R-Type 3 port was terrible.

If there were "an abundance", that would mean that there would be very many of them. You mean a shortage or something like that.
Really, I think the shooter as a genre has just declined in popularity. It's one of the types of games that has suffered in the slow migration the industry has been making toward a pretty narrow focus of types of games that are very popular.

Yes. Shooters just aren't vogue anymore, and most shooters just hit the fan once they come out, unless they get supported by a cult following. (Like Ikaruga, for instance.)

But developing for the GBA is a lot cheaper than stationary consoles, and it's open to a much broader market than the Dreamcast which has had new shooters recently. At least in Japan there should be a good selection of new titles.
Even some of the GBA shmups released haven't made it over here. I'm still eager to play Darius-R and Steel Empire.

How very punny!
Good lord, this must be becoming so punishing to read..
Anyways.. about a year ago I was giving some thought to the pursuit of programming for the GBA, since it's as close as you'll come to developing the same kind of games possible on the 16-bit consoles while still reaching an enormous modern market. The low resolution of the screen can make for a cramped shooter, though.. especially if trying to port from Genesis or SNES. I'm curious how the GBA port of Steel Empire turned out.

I still wonder why there isn't a single vertical scrolling shooter on N-Gage. That screen begs for some.

Lol! Edited.
That was completely by accident, I swear.
