Hot on the heels of the classic Golden Axe series, Sega unleashed Alien Storm upon the arcade scene. It was a game that attempted to add to an already solid formula, and overall made a decent attempt. The Genesis version remains a fan favorite to this day, and hopefully Sega will soon rise from its stupor and give us a proper sequel. Until then, you'll have to get by with our review (http://www.sega-16.com/2006/01/alien-storm/) of the cartridge version.

I don't know why the Genesis version is so much different than the arcade. Good game tho.

Yey, my review is up! :D

Yeah, it is a very nice game. However, knowing Sega these days, they would never make a sequel out of something that would actually sell.

Heck, I can see them making Dark Castle II before they revive a GOOD franchise they had on the megadrive.

Oh, and welcome to the boards Richied. :)

This game sounds pretty cool. I might put this on my wanted list.

As a kid, I always wanted to play Alien Storm. I had one of those "HOW TO WIN AT GENESIS GAMES!" books that covered it, and it always looked really fun.

I, to this day, still haven't played it. :P

Would that book happen to be "The Secrets of the Games" one? I've got that, too. :P

That title sounds familiar...did it have a bunch of black-and-white photos?

I have the Sega Mega Drive Six Pack which contains this game. It's an ok game. It's fun for a while but nothing great. The worst thing about this game in my opinion is how it looks. The alien designs are just ridiculous.

Have to play it in multiplayer yet, although I don't think I ever will. I'd rather play Hyperstone Heist.

Alien Storm was much better than Golden Axe. The sci-fi edge was awesome, the levels were varied and the enemies were cool. Golden Axe only had the claim to its arcade classicism, however, it has aged terribly. Alien Storm 1 v 0 Golden Axe.

I like those shooting stages in Alien Storm. But compared to Golden Axe...

- The music in Golden Axe is MUCH better.

- In Alien Storm you have guys running around with HUGE guns that have a range of only an arm's length. That's frustrating, I want to blast through the levels.

- Golden Axe has dragons you can ride - and little gnomes to kick around
Which makes up for the shooting stages Alien Storm has.

- In Alien Storm all you do is walk in straight lines from left to right on empty roads that never change at all. The stages in Golden Axe are not just straight paths, but go up and down, with actual obstacles.

- Golden Axe has a wider variety of enemies. Although they basically are all the same, at least they look different. In Alien Storm they just come in different colors.

So in my opinion Golden Axe is the superior game.

I totally missed out on playing Alien Storm during my heavy MD years (91/96)
But i always knew this game existed, so when the day finally came that i purchased it from ebay i was ecstatic.

sadly the game turned out to not be much fun when played alone.
Maybe its better with two players?

hmm, will have to give this one a try again.

It's definitely the weakest game of the bunch (Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Alien Storm) but it's not terrible or anything. Its main issue seems to be the music, otherwise it's pretty much Golden Axe with aliens.
So, if you and your buddy do enjoy the occasional Golden Axe 1 or 2 on MD, chances are you'll also enjoying Alien Storm.

I spent a little while with this game again today. This is just crazy...

The second stage got aliens actually EATING buildings.
What other game is there where you can say you got dragged into the mouth of a giant slug by a green man coming out of it?

I made it to the last level, then I went blind - pink backgrounds with green alien face slug things running and jumping around.

I think I have to change my mind a little bit. This game is bad. This game is REALLY, REALLY bad, it's actually so bad it's good again.

One thing I noticed while playing is that the collision detection is completely off. Sometimes I get hit by stuff that's not even close to me, on the other hand the second boss, that giant mutated pineapple thing, shot me several times with the explosion sprites matching my yellow flamethrowergirl perfectly and nothing happened at all.

Double M:
I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments. Back in the early 90s i missed purchasing this game. it was only recently that I added this game to my ever growing collection. After playing this game a number of times, I discovered the same thing: The collision detection is completely off. So much so, it simply turned me off from cracking open this game and finishing it once and for all. In two player mode, it does have some redeaming qualities but in single player mode it exudes pure frustration. :daze:

You people who disagree with me have no taste. Alien Storm was pre-X-Files alien originality awesomeness at its most awesome. Golden Axe has aged worse than Mickey Rourke.
