Rant about Gamestop here. Tell your stories far and wide about their incompetence and low-balling schemes! Tell us about your encounters with their horrible employees!
Here's Mine:
Two days ago I went into Gamestop to see if they had Punch-out for wii in. I see an advertisement on a small poster on the counter for a tournament. So I'm waiting in line, and this lady is in front of me trading in a shitload of Gamecube stuff. So I'm waiting, the lady asks me if I'm in her way. I say no. The guy with her moves away from the counter, and I move up. They finally ring everything up and the trade-in total comes out to $112 or so dollars. So I'm waiting there, and the dude convinces her to get an edge card. She's buying a $17 USED game, and a $10 Wii accessories package. The wii accessories is on clearance for $9.99, and it rings up as $20. He fixes it The guy then gets flustered when the total comes out to $67 in trade-in after all the buying and the lady says "That's not right". So the guy calls out the manager from the backroom, who knows me because I'm a regular customer in there (soon not to be). He says "where did you come from? Why don't you come back from where you came from?" I say "Why?" He says "Because you're annoying". The guy thought that because I told the lady they charged her $3 in refurbishing fees that I was instead saying that Gamestop was ripping them off. They then proceed to try and ring everything up again, and I leave.
We come back later to confront the guy about his rudeness (since I was pissed and ready to call up customer service and file a complaint) and the guy was like "oh, well I was just trying to get you away from the counter since you were telling the lady that Gamestop was ripping her off." So I was like, eh, w/e. And that was that. The guy could've simply told me to just "back away from the counter" and I would've been fine with that. The people in there are rude.

not all Gamestops are like that.
Although I miss the days when there was a Electronic Boutique and Funcoland.

lol, I opened this thread going "I could have swore we already have a thread like this."
Baloo, that is pretty messed up of them but like I said in the other thread and gamegenie said, not all GameStops are like that. GS is just like any other store in the fact that your experience will vary from store to store, and from employee to employee. And as for it being a shitty company, you have no idea until you work there.

With the FTC breathing down their necks over letting employees play new games for free, and for selling opened games as "new"... I'd expect some strict laws passed in the next few years regulating used game stores. They'll either have to adapt or close down. Not that I wish to support any place that gives $2 trade in and resells for $20. I've stopped doing business with used game outlets unless necessary. I can sell for more on craigslist and buy games cheaper on CL too. And I get actual CASH, not "store credit".

Heh, there wouldn't be a GameStop thread on Sega-16 without the obligatory appearance by AD2101. :D
You know.......I've actually entertained the thought of seeking employment at GameStop. I've got a High School (equivalency) diploma w/39 college credits, not much in the way of work experience........think I should sell my soul?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Around 2005 the guys who used to work there were awesome people. The people there now...well, you already know what they're like.
And I hope the FTC does something about their scamming ways, I'm sick of these big monopolies crushing small businesses. Yeah, I'm looking at you Wal-Mart.
And no, please don't work there. You'll only end up supporting them in one way or another. Try to find work at an independant video game store.

Things would be so much easier if Gamestop still sold retro games.

Almost all game stores suck. Most of the employees don't have any real business experience and only work there because they like video games. In correlation with that, most people that play alot of video games don't handle social situations well (there are certainly exceptions, but I'm basing this on personal experience). Because of this, they shit their pants anytime they have to do anything with a customer. The fact is is that these places really aren't very profitable so many corners are cut in employee training and wages, leaving only the dumbest of dumbshits remaining. If anyone has been keeping tabs, I promptly got the fuck out of working at Play N Trade for a similar reason, even though that was an independently owned franchise. The only game stores that would be worth going to are ones run by people running them for fun as a semi-retirement, that's the only way you'll get knowledgeable employees that actually are willing to do any work.

No, I would find a more laid back job that pays the same and just hang out a video game related place in your spare time. If you're working up front on the clock, its just like any other cashier-type job, you can't really sit back and enjoy the atmosphere or talk to any of the more knowledgeable customers because you'll be too busy wondering why the scanner isn't working and the $30 game keeps ringing up for $15 or vice versa, then have someone want to trade in some weird ass obscure cheat device or something and wonder what the hell its worth, etc. etc. etc.
I would try to find a job at the same place as a really laid back friend that won't annoy you if you're around him too long and isn't too busy or at least is busy in waves so you get a break once in a while.

The guy that runs my local play n trade is cool as shit. He gives me discounts all the time and he lets me come in and use his SF 4 stick whenever I want (although I rarely do because that wouldn't be right) and I'm not even in there THAT much. The other day I walked in for the first time in a few weeks after buying Turtles in Time and he asked me how I was enjoying it. I was shocked that he remembered what I bought 3 weeks ago lol. I've never had that kind of experience at a gamestop.

Well then you have the right kind of owner at your store. The one that owned my store was too up his own ass and didn't know how to run a business. Your owner sounds more like the guy that owns GameWare, though his store has gotten too big IMO and the few times I've been there and recent years he was nowhere to be found. I think the key is having a smaller store so you have less overhead and don't have to sell such a huge volume to retards that fuck it up and blame you.

Oh, I know what you mean. The people at my Gamestop tried to argue with me that Ken and Ryu were NOT rivals in Street Fighter IV, rather that fat guy and Ken were rivals. They probably never played a Street Fighter game in their life before they had to host that tournament and put the demo in the machine.

Well, as far as IV goes that's correct. Rufus and Ken are rivals like Guile and Abel are rivals in this one, and I forgot who Capcom assigned for Sakura and C. Viper. Not that anyone that is a fan of the series looks at it that way but that's how its set up in IV.

I went into one today to buy Midway Arcade Classics (I've been itchin to play Smash TV for SOOO LONG) for PS2 and the dude was nice enough and I'm not going to blame him, but I really must say that it really drives me nuts when they constantly push that discount card.
I do not want a magazine subscription outlining games for systems I do not and will not own. God please just take no for an answer and let me go...I mean I want to give you my money, what more do you want from me!?
