Well now there's not too much RPG discussion going on is there? So I figured I'd get this up. What are the better, or best, RPG's of the system? Which ones were terrible? Let's just get some good, honest, Genesis RPG discussion going.

I personally liked Phantasy Star 2, 3, and 4... especially 4. I also played through Vermilion (designed by AM2 with Yu Suzuki) and it is decent, but with great music. I just got Shining and the Darkness and it is pretty good if you like dungeon crawlers.

I've never actually beaten a PS game. PS2 is insanely hard although I do love it. I never got far into PS3 because I didn't figure out how to save my game. PS4 is great and easy... but the bosses are tough cookies. Damn you Zio!

Phantasy Star IV is definitely my favorite. I also have a soft spot for Shadowrun.. there's just so much to do in that game it's unbelievable.

It's not really an RPG but I've been playing Starflight and it's just as indepth as one and has a few RPG elements like stats. You've got to have a lot of patience but captaining a star ship in an open ended environment is a blast. The mystery-style story that you have to unfold by questioning alien races is intriguing as well.

Beyond Oasis, Crusader of Centy, Light Crusader, and Landstalker - The Four Action RPGs That Own.

Shining Force, Gemfire, Warsong, all of those deserve honorable mentions. As for action RPG's I tend to go with Crusader of Centy and Beyond Oasis. I'd go for Landstalker more if the controls didn't bug me.

I love Starflight too... have you ever played Star Control?
My favorite RPG on the genesis is Phantasy Star 4 followed by Landstalker, Beyond Oasis, Shining Force and Crusader of the Centy. Phantasy Star 3 is kinda boring because the battles are just plain without seeing the characters. I played Light Crusader for a while but didn't get far because the puzzles were too hard. I only played Phantasy Star 2 for a while and I'm sure that's a great game.

Were there any you specifically had in mind? Oh and on the bright side I killed Zio today and got to... *forgets the name of the haywire satellite*

No, just curious, I keep seeing a bunch of RPG looking titles for the genesis on auction sites.
I recently bought The Fairy Tale and will try that out later. But there are others like Blades of Vengeance and Risky Woods.
I just wondered if these games really are beeing ignored from beeing bad or since they dosent fit into the idea of "classic" 16-bit rpgs. I.E japanese ones.

I don't have many of those RPG's so I'm at a rare loss for words.

I've played Faery Tale Adventure and it's really not that bad. I had the opportunity to buy it but since I'm not a big RPG gamer I passed it up. It's not very pretty but it's not bad. Don't touch it if you're expecting something similar to Japanese RPG's though.

I do have that one, but I haven't really played it yet. I'll get around to it at some point or other.

I simply love this game, and I've been looking for a copy for some time. I really had a blast with it when it first came out.

Rings of Power was pretty cool. I don't remember if EA published it, but it was developed by Naughty Dog, who's from the US.

But there are others like Blades of Vengeance and Risky Woods.
Those are platformers, but you do have an inventory and can buy equipment in blades of vengeance. It's also 2-player, pretty good game. RW is kind of like galahad or misadventures of flink.
Edit:
Great: PSIV, Shining Force 2, Landstalker, Monster World IV, Langrisser Hikari II
Good: PSII, King Colossus (love the different equipment), Beyond Oasis, Pirates! Gold, Flashback, Starflight, Arcus Odyssey
Average: Light Crusader, Wonder Boy in Monster World, Shining Force, Ys III, Addams Family Values, It Came From The Desert (incredibly hard but still), Warsong
Bad: Sword of Vermilion, Super Hydlide (ost is great though), PSIII, Faery Tale Adventures, Exile (poor controls and level design), Immortal (had fun watching a speedrun though)
Not Sure: Sorcerer's Kingdom, Traysia, Rings of Power, Buck Rogers (hard game), Soleil (seems like a good ripoff), Shadowrun (I keep dying in the beginning not knowing what to do), Uncharted Waters 1-2

I just bought Beyond Oasis today. All I really want left is Crusader of Centy and Landstalker. I'm not a RPG junky, but these look good in the collection and have a lot of replay.
Here's what I own:
Beyond Oasis
Sword of Vermilion
Light Crusader
Genesis Knight

RPGs are too expensive for me, but here's what I've got.
Light Crusader
Landstalker
Beyond Oasis
Crusader of Centy (PRICEY!!! Ouch.)
Spiritual Warfare (yes, yes...snicker all you want.)
I used to have Faery Tale Adventure, but it didn't thrill me so I sold it.

Agreed. I saved my money and got a bunch of RPG's. Kept any that were in the range of amazing-mediocre and sold any that were less than mediocre. Quite simple really.

The best: Phantasy Star IV
The good: Phantasy Star II and III, Light Crusader, Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force and II
The average: Landstalker, Wonder Boy in Monster World
The bad: Soleil

Soliel (A.K.A. Crusader of Centy) wasn't that bad. It even had potential, the problem was that it was somewhat poorly scripted and the main idea wasn't carried across convincingly. If it had been done better it could have been quite good.
On a side note, as I am continuing my PS4 game I'd appreciate any advice. I'm trying to kill the bosses, the ones who stole the torch eye, in Air Castle. My team's at about level 30 and gets promptly owned every time I try.
Any advice?
The average: Landstalker, Wonder Boy in Monster World

I've been playing Light Crusader which is pretty lousy... it makes Landstalker look like an image of perfection in comparison. Tsk tsk Treasure, should've stuck to shooters.
I love Wonder Boy in Monster World. My first impression wasn't very good but it grew on me. It's one of the titles I had when I was younger that I wish I hadn't gotten rid of now.

There is a big jump in difficulty when you get to the Air Castle. Level 30 is a bit low; even if you beat those guys, the next boss will cream you.
I guess you just have to do some leveling. I don't like powerleveling, but occasionally you need to do it. You may want to take up some time with the jobs in Aiedo, if you haven't already.
After that, set up a macro for a good combo move like Grand Cross.

Damn. More a less what I expected though. I recall the old adage, when being owned gain two levels!
Anyway as far as Landstalker and Light Crusader are concerned...
Landstalker is good, but the controls are really annoying. If I could manage them better I'd probably like the game more. The other thing is that my old cart has a dead save battery so I'm forced to emulation for the most part, and that's not as easy to manuver as a Genesis controller is.
Now I liked Light Crusader, but it does get to the point where it's just ridiculous. That more than anything else is the reason that a good RPG was reduced to mediocre.

Well, My all time fav RPG has to be PSII, ive completed it twice, because first time i was at menobe (a dungeon in dezo) and i tripped on the controller wire and it crashed the game so i reset it,, and when i went to load up my game, it had been deleted when the megadrive crashed, lol i was nearly in tears, but then i completed it :D(my god dark force is huge!) but anyway other RPG's that i like,, are kings bounty i dunno if u could call it a rpg, and some more but none spring to mind at the moment

I've always been more of a Shining Force person, myself. In my opinion, Shining Force II is easily the best RPG on the Genesis. Not only do I prefer fantasy to sci-fi, I just find it more fun than the other RPGs on the Genesis.

^^^ I love the Shining Force series, it's my favorite tactical series.
I can't figure out why Sega doesn't release a true sequel to the series. Especially since Nintendo's Fire Emblem series has been getting a lot of love these days.

Is there any difference between Crusader of Centy and Soleil? Or just the title screen?
Seems like the PAL version is a little cheaper to get.
Joe Redifer

Soliel has a better script (re: Centy is full of typos and some bad English from what I hear, the PAL version is not). However Soliel needs to run in 50Hz, which sucks extreme amount of ass. If you run it in the US, it'll like run at hyper speed.

Wasn't there a few Dungeons and Dragons games on the Genesis? I know there was at least one.

There was Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun, a pretty PC-style RPG. Top-down perspective on the overworld with turn-based battles and first-person-dungeon exploring with real-time battles.
Not bad if you like that kinda stuff, but I prefer the typical japanese RPG-style.
