I've seen the s-video mods, but now I'm wondering about component. Is this possible on Genesis?
If not through a mod, then maybe through cables? Isn't there a generic SCART-RGB conversion cable you can buy? But would a SCART lead even work on an NTSC unit?

Yes. I have one on the way. You need an RGB SCART output from the Genesis or 32X. That connects to a SCART RGB to component convertor. Then the component is your regular 3 cable analog out to your TV. I suggest a standard definition TV with component inputs because HDTVs cannot run in 240p. Instead they upscale it to 480i and it will look much blockier than it should.

an RGB SCART output
Those exist for non-PAL consoles?

Hmm, even CRT HDTVs? I was thinking of getting an HDTV, but if none of them can run in 240p, that's kind of a dealbreaker.
Hmm, if so, wouldn't there be an upscan converter that could help?

How big are these converters? Would it be possible to squeeze one inside the actual genesis?

Uh, no. They're not that small, no way. I don't see why it would need to be hidden. One thing though is that the RGB to component converter needs its own power source. So you may just need to get 2 or 3 more Sega Power Strips.
All HDTVs upscale 240p to 480i or higher, even CRT HDTVs. I have a CRT HDTV. If you purchased some sort of upscaler it would kind of defeat the purpose. No matter what happens it's gonna be upscaled on an HDTV. They do make 4:3 CRT SDTVs with component inputs, though. I have two of them and they do 240p just fine. Also, you don't want to buy a widescreen HDTV just to play 4:3 games on it do you? Nah. Your Genesis and other classic systems deserve their own quality 4:3 TV.

I want a TV that is capable of 240p, 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. All in one. And I want it to be able to work with light gun games.
Someday, they will make a TV just for me.
edit: what about an EDTV? Do they all upscale to 480i as well?

I want a TV that will display all of those resolutions in their native format as well. Might as well have it do 1080p also while you're at it.
Not sure about EDTV. Basically what that means is it can do 480p and no higher. In theory it SHOULD be able to do 240p natively if you found a CRT EDTV. The only EDTV I've ever had experience with was a plasma, and all non-CRT TVs upscale or downscale EVERYTHING to their oddball wacko non-standard resolution.
