So which are the rarest Mega CD games for the US?
The top 3 rares EU games are:
1. The Adventures of Batman & Robin (known copies can be counted on the fingrs of 1 hand).
2. Fatal Fury Special (Same here).
3. Samurai Showdown. Usually goes for something like 150$US.

In the USA?
Lawnmower Man I think is the rarest in the states, but the european version is set to run on US systems for some reason. All the working Designs games, and even the orignal release of Night Trap are common, just in demand, so that's why they are pricy, not rarity. Maybe some obscure, crappy game is the rarest US Sega CD game.
The thing about rare games in europe, some games are only released in some countries. I've heard some of those games had a release in one country, but not the rest of europe. I know that's true for some variations.

Lawnmower man is rare? Really? I never knew that. I just guess I never thought of that because a friend of mine had it.

Penn & Teller: Smoke and Mirrors supposedly had a few copies pressed...

They where pre-release copies, and I doubt they had a box or manual. I dunno how they got out in circulation, but I've heard you can find it online. I've never seen an ISO for it, but I've heard it's out there.

I have The Lawnmower Man for Sega CD. It is a very rare game. The problem is that nobody wants it because the game is bad. I would give it a 2.

Batman and Robin? Why would they go through the hastle of pressing copies to make less then 10? What did the machine break during printing and they sold the 8 or 9 they had?
seriousily a CD press run does not become cost effective until the several thousand prints. No publisher in their right minds (not saying there aren't any over the top mad publishers out there) would print that few of copies...
except in the penn and teller case as that was a promo dealy.

Well when someone decides to make a bad game out of a worse movie... ;)
I think it's worth having because of the sheer obscurity of it.

Here's what I saw on the PAL Mega CD Database, concerning Batman and Robin
Those hunting for perhaps the rarest official Mega-CD game should look in Spain - pretty much every copy held by collectors has come from there.
For Fatal Fury Special:
Limited experience suggests that it was released in mainland Europe if not the U.K. - Damian's originally came from Spain, mine seems to have started out in France and a third collector has one from Germany.
So see these games might have been released in some countries. Look, Spain only got the Model 2 Mega CD, so some games might seem rare, but they could be hella common in some areas.
I'm sure more than eight or a few copies of these games where released, it's just that a lot of people fessed up about owning them. Or a lot of the people who have them don't have internet access, so...

Well, thats true for pretty much any rare game.
Personaly I would agree to these games beeing rare. Ive seen pretty much all other Mega CD games on tradera.se or ebay.com. But not these 3.
The only thing that should be rare about Lawnmower Man is finding someone who actually likes it.

I know that the Japan version was released under the name Bari-arm. This might be the same case for the UK version (If there even was one).

It must have been in a dream or something because a major Mega CD website does not show it on the entire list. Type in Sega Mega CD Library in the google search if you don't believe me.

Just to dig up this old thread... from what I can tell the rarest US releases here in 2009 are:
The Lawnmower Man
The Space Adventure
Radical Rex
BC Racers
Crime Patrol
... but I think the only one I've never so much as seen an actual picture of (besides the stock image), is the re-release of Night Trap (the Sega CD only version). The CD 32X version is everywhere, so is the original, but that one is no where to be found.
Might be leaving some obvious ones out here.

Maybe it's been by chance, but I haven't seen it up for grabs anywhere since I started collecting (not too long ago). I figured it was another rare game that no one cared about.

Digital Press lists the following as 6 on their rarity guide:
Keio Flying Squadron
The Space Adventure
Radical Rex
Crime Patrol
Lords of Thunder
Night Trap (re-release)
The Lawnmower Man
The following are a 5:
Time Gal
Snatcher
Dungeon Explorer
Samurai Shodown
Road Rash
Mad Dog II: The Lost Gold
Jaguar XJ220
Demolition Man
Championship Soccer '94
(US List)
The only one I have seen in the wild is Road Rash.

My local retro/game swap store (where I got my CDX for $125) actually has a complete copy of Keio Flying Squadron, but I don't know how much they want for it.
You have to look at their inventory online and then go in and ask for what you're after, because they were loosing too much to theft. So they took lousy pics of each of their SCD games where you can barely read the price sticker, and Keio is like the only one you can't make out. Though none of the other games are priced above $15.
I suppose I'll have to go down there and ask. I think that might actually be the rarest, or second to it. It goes for an insane price online.

"Samurai Shodown" might be pretty rare........it has a brutal glitch that locks up the game when you reach the final boss, Amakusa apparently.....I'll have to confirm that myself, or perhaps those who have it can do so. JVC (the publisher) offered a free exchange for "Fatal Fury Special", their only other SCD fighting game, and no recall or "fixed" copy was ever released. It was also a mid-1995 release, and wasn't released in Japan either.

According to Segabase, at least one copy of Dark Seed exists in the wild, although it contradicts itself buy also saying that it's unreleased:
http://segabase.org/CD/CD-DarkSeed.html
In the UK, the magazine Mega Power reviewed the game so it must exist somewhere, in some form or another. Sadly there is not even an ISO available.
With regards to winona's original post, I would say that Marko's Magic Football, Syndicate and Theme Park are at least equally rare PAL titles as these seem to be the hardest to obtain. Whether that's indicative of rarity is arguable though, I guess.
Another title which I'm not sure is rare but is a bugger to obtain is The Space Adventure, in both PAL and US flavours. It doesn't tend to fetch much on eBay on the rare occasion a copy does surface though.
As for Japanese titles, I've never seen a copy of Sing! anywhere which is a music compilation of Sega remixes that includes a Mega CD game on it. Other rarities include Keioh Yukegitai (with the slip case) and, according to online sources, Shadowrun, although copies of Shadowrun can be found quite often.

how about: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein?
DP's rarity guide is pretty much bunk. A lot of the stuff they list as rare is really just in high demand.
this.
BC Racers might actually be rare, that game did seem limited upon release.
For some reason I don't recall Core games being stocked at ToysRUs.
And while Battlecorps, Soul Star, and AH3 Thunderstrike were very common at Babbages and EB, BC Racers came and went.

I think that game only came as a double pack with Bram Stoker's Dracula, which isn't really all that rare.

*note: don't piss and moan about piracy, its an unreleased game, if you want to bitch about it, then you better bitch out every person who ever bought an Alien Soldier, Pulseman, or Mega Man: The Wily Wars repro*

ALRIGHT ALREADY! I'LL DO IT! GOD!
I got lucky as shit and found it MINT/COMPLETE in a lot on eBay with 3 other games for $20 shipped. Deal of the effin century. In a related story, I like it better than the Neo Geo version because it doesn't have that unnecessary scaling bullshit. I really want Fatal Fury Special too, but considering how rare it is, that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

Nice. I really want a copy of Samurai Shodown for SCD, I have the Genesis game and it's playable but it's just too slow in my opinion.
Fatal Fury Special looks cool as well. Does anyone know if the Japanese version as rare as the US release?

It's not rare or expensive but be warned, it's not very good. The characters are nice and big but not too smooth moving, and the backgrounds are almost totally devoid of any animation at all.

This.
And the scaling is what makes Samurai Shodown......Samurai Shodown. Also, how's about those piss-poor voice samples and sfx, and the lack of Kuroko and round/win announcements? Not to mention........the SCD version appears to be a port of the AES version, meaning they only give you 4 CREDITS in single-player mode. With cheapsauce characters like Nako-friggin'-Ruru, Wan Fu and Amakusa they go by quick.

everywhere online a 5 really isn't all that rare a rating and the demand is high. But its far from common
Someone should totally do a repro of penn and teller!
Also as for this samsho business skip it and get a neo geo copy-only way to play samsho.

Don't forget about Lunar: The Silver Star. There are a LOT of copies floating around out there, yes, but remember that there were 7 different pressings of the disc. In my experience, I've found disc 5 and 7 to be the hardest to come across. I've seen more of my fair share of the other disc arts.

JUST BECAUSE it is everywhere online does NOT mean it is everywhere in the wild. Moonwalker for Genesis is a R4 and I see tons of copies on eBay, and yet I have not found a copy in the wild anywhere, same goes for Snatcher.
