I'm in the U.S.A. and do not have a PAL-compatible TV nor a PAL Playstation, but I loved the original Wipeout games: Wipeout (1), 2097/XL, and 3 are still some of my favorite games ever.
How cool is the European-only Wipeout 3 Special Edition? I'm considering getting a PAL PlayStation and the game, though I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the PAL-only output from the PS once I get it.
All comments and ideas are appreciated. :)

I didnt know that Wipeout 3 wasn't released in the US, I have downloaded and played it on my modded ps1 and its a good game overall , compared to Wipeout 1, the new circuits are not so fun to race, too much curves and and traps to make you crash onto the side walls, it has only a few places to reach high speeds, at least on the circuits i've unlocked.
I only have Wipeout 1 for the Saturn wich i dont know how good is compared to ps1 version anyways.

Wipeout 3 was, but not Wipeout 3 Special Edition: http://www.mobygames.com/game/wipeout-3-special-edition
I played the first one on PS and Saturn, and I preferred the PS version--Saturn's graphics didn't seem so nice on that game, if I recall correctly.

I don't see the appeal of the Wipeout games. I have the original in all its complete/mint glory, but it just seems clunky and poorly programmed. Am I missing something? Everyone seems to LOVE this game, but I can't seem to take a corner without riding the walls.
As an added note, unless you are hellbent on real hardware, a modded PSP 2001 would be the easiest way to play it and its virtually perfect emulation.

The first one was great, but XL/2097 was far better--have you played that one?
To me, they're just more intense and far more fun than standard racing games. They've got the hover-racing speed and cool-factor of F-Zero, but you can also blow the other guys up. They get really, really hard, and you're right, sometimes it's a fight just to stay off the walls (1&2 are digital-only controls apart from the neGcon, so don't be afraid to finesse the rudder by rapidly tapping left/right when necessary, and use those air-brakes!), but once you've played enough to know that with enough practice you can stay off the walls, it's so worth it. It's a thing of beauty when you're in the zone, fully concentrating on just the game, and you're flying through the course without touching walls, executing perfect turns, dealing with opponents/hazards with near-robotic reflexes--few video game experiences compare with that feeling. :D

The Saturn version has slightly grainy textures and the draw distance isn't quite up to the Playstation version, but the Red-Book audio is a plus.

So it may definately be an idea for you to try out the sequels.

I remember the PC demo of part of the series, not sure which (must have been Wipeout 209, that and the N64 version, which I never owned. (the 4-player split screen was nice though)
I's got a similar style to the F-Zero series, though from what I remember I liked the PC game and N64 versions more than F-ZeroX. (and the original, which definitely takes a hit for lack of multiplayer inspite of the retro charm)
I don't think I've ever played the PSX or Saturn versions though.

Sounds to me like if you already have WipEout and WipEout XL/2097, you don't need the Special Edition of the third for anything.

You may be right, but it's supposed to have some neat features--no new tracks though. And I own XL and 3 presently, seem to have lost the original but played it a lot in the past.
Anyone ever actually played Wipeout 3 Special Edition?
Wipeout3se is the only wipeout I have played. Its fun but I can't see it being worth buying a pal playstaiton for. If you have have a modded ps
you can patch an iso of the game to ntsc but I'm not sure if you wanted to go that route..

Somehow I missed your post, thanks.
So, someone has played it! Well, if it's the only one you've played, you may not be a fan of the series and understand that those games can be like crack! ;)
Good info about the patched ISO: I don't have a modded PS, but that might solve a number of other issues.... :)
Also, just noticed, a fellow Oklahoman. Well, I guess I should say.....sorry. :( lol. Well, I guess there are worse states...or maybe one--I mean I've heard that anyway.
