Well, one thing to remember is that this scale isn't good to bad, it's like Mind-blowing Awesomeness to Incredible Fun. So the order in which folks rank them will vary considerably depending on personal tastes.

If we talk just Sonic the Hedgehog 3 it's at the bottom.
If we talk Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles it's at the top.
The first and second are both great in their own ways, so I can't really rank them. I used to think the first was the best out of nostalgia, but after playing through it again recently it wasn't really that awesome. A great game, but too much bloody waiting.

I think that Green Hill Zone is the best zone out of any of the 3 sonic games, but I feel that most people share the idea that Sonic 2 and 3 really took everything great from the first game and magnified it.

Also my vote:
Sonic 2
Sonic 3&Knuckles
Sonic 1

But Sonic 1 is the only game in which you'll find the epic Starlight Zone.

That's why it made my #2 spot.

Sonic 3 made my #3 because it's the first Sonic game to ever disappoint me, and I'll never forgive it (a $40-$50 apology via Sonic & Knuckles does not make it okay)

. . . hello?

Taken at it's time it was, and I still consider it the most pure Sonic game, though I guess that's something of a tautology, and it was a damn close call for me, but 2 was just mo' betta. And had it blast processing, whereas I believe Sonic 1 had only pretty-gosh-darn-fun processing.

The first has to much fucking waiting.
You wait on the blocks in Marble Zone, you wait on the elevators in Spring Yard Zone, you wait for the bubbles in Labyrinth Zone, you wait, wait, wait and wait.
It makes me crazy.

Very good point--I never realized that, but you're right, and the later Sonic games don't have much of that at all.

definitely, that's why I always hated it. I remember playing it at the store displays and having a blast through Green Hill Zone and then quickly losing interest once I got to the Marble Zone. If the rest of the game was more like Green Hill and Star Light zone, I think the first Sonic would be higher up on the list. This is also why I prefer the SMS/GG version of Sonic 1 as the levels ARE mostly running/speed instead of wait wait wait wait walk 2 steps left wait wait wait...

Sonic 2 wins out of the Genesis Sonics because it is the best example of the true Sonic "run as fast as you can" gameplay. Every level in Sonic 2 turns into a speed run unlike the other games that inevitably have some annoying puzzle or elevator you have to wait for. Sonic is about speed, not waiting, that's for Mario games.

No doubt about it, Sonic 2 is the winner in my opinion for its level design and bosses. However, shockingly enough, I would say the original is my second favorite only because I still found the game fun even with limited moments of speed (I guess I liked the challenge the game presented), then it would be the third and Sonic and Knuckles respectively.

I'm your man, Sonic 1 will always be number 1 nostalgia combined with AWESOME yet still fairly brief game makes it the perfect combo; I can live without the Spin Dash. Star Light Zone and Scrap Brain Zone are my absolute favorites!

1 and 2
3
Sonic and Knuckles

I really don't like the levels of Sonic and Knuckles, and even though the first Sonic isn't the fastest, I still have to tie it between that and two. Those two both have their pros and cons, although I do find myself playing Sonic 1 more.

If we're adding Spinball, which we shouldn't as it's a red-headed bastard stepchild of a Sonic game, let's just take it as a given that it's at the bottom of everyone's list, no matter how many more games we include.

Out of every Sonic Game I've played -

1. Sonic 3 and Knuckles
2. Sonic Adventure 2
3. Sonic the Hedgehog 1
4. Sonic Adventure
5. Sonic Advance
6. Sonic the Hedgehog 1 (8-bit)

7. Sonic the Hedgehog 2

That list could probably change substantially on a daily basis though tbh, and it's actually quite difficult to compare the 3D ones to the 2D games.

Sonic 3 had the features I always wanted out of Sonic such as:

Game Saves
The game let you pick up on the level you left off at - and when you beat the game you THEN had the ability to choose levels to go back and play, also collecting those missed Chaos Emeralds.
There were PLENTY of save slots too! Which is great for a family playing ie: my several brothers and I sharing games.

Super Sonic
Super Sonic was a great reward for beating the game, it was the ultimate unlock and made various parts of the game enjoyable to run through and re-experience. It was also fair in limitations (ie required rings, still killable by certain things)
This also gave your that extra desire to go back and beat levels again to capture all of the Chaos Emeralds.

However, I will also say that there are certain things I enjoyed in Sonic 2 more than 3. Needless to say, 1 2 & 3 were all great games.

I found Sonic 3D blast quite fun and rather impressive for the Genesis as well.

Baloo

From what I've heard, Sonic 3D Blast is better on Saturn due to the 3D controller and better special stages.

I wouldn't rank the 8-bit versions against the 16-bit versions though, rather 8-bit games against 8-bit:

Sonic Chaos
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)
Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)
Tails' Adventure
Sonic Drift 2
Sonic Triple Trouble
Tails' Skypatrol

The original is my favorite. The fantastic musical score stands out amongst the many reasons I prefer it. The musical scores of 2 and 3 are nowhere near as good.

And I actually appreciate the slower pacing of the marble and labyrinth zones.

That was longer than 5 seconds - that opinion is therefore disqualified ;)

I honestly can't choose between 1 and 2. 16-bit, that is - Master System Sonic 1 is a clear winner.

Sonic 3 lost a lot of points with me for being so short, and I never liked the music / Sonic sprite very much. Or Carnival Night Zone. And my save games were inexplicably lost so many times... Despite all this, I don't hate Sonic 3 (and/or "& Knuckles") - but obviously I still have residual disappointment. :?

OK the world has awaited my opinions on the subject at hand with baited breath and now it is finally time to unleash my preferences upon you, the little people. As always, my opinions are fact and cannot be disputed. The space between rankings shows how much better each game is than the one below it:

#1 - Sonic the Hedgehog - Sega Genesis System - The original is still the best with really nice and smooth graphics and perfectly fitting tunes. It is fun to play if you like Sonic games, I guess.
.
.
.
#2 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Sega Genesis System - An excellent follow-up continuing with smooth graphics and nice, smooth tunes that fit the game. A very fast game, but Tails is annoying and does not need to exist.

#3 - Sonic the Hedgehog 1 - Sega Master System - Pretty cool game with music by Yuzo Koshiro so it rocks down da funky techno beat yo, because that's all Yuzo can do. Or maybe it sounds like ActRaiser. I dunno. A bit simplistic and not really based on speed like the other games, but that's OK.

#4 - Sonic CD - Sega CD System - This game hesitates/drops frames making the scrolling choppy in some places. Poor programming. Traveling through time ruins the pace of the game. Poor level design. Bonus stages can't even do "Mode 7" as well as the SNES (15fps vs 60 on the SNES).

#7 - Sonic 2 - Sega Master System - Could this game be any more impossible?

All in all, I'd say that Sonic hasn't aged very well and I really don't like playing Sonic games any more. Granted I'll still pull out part one now and again and play up to stage 2-1, but that's it. I am not sure why this game appeals to so many.

Final Analysis:
Sonic should be retired forever.

Sonic 1 is an excellent game with some minor imperfections. Since it's the first in the series, that was to be expected and it's completely forgivable. It did an incredible lot of things right the first time around, and it even has a special kind of charm to it that I haven't felt in any other Sonic game.

Sonic 2 then did what any good sequel should do: it perfected the formula without messing up what made the first game great. There's a better focus on speed, a much-needed spin dash move was added, the level design is tight, and the graphics are cleaned up a bit. Sonic 2 was hardly as revolutionary as Sonic 1 was, but then it needn't be.

Sonic 3 suffered from the second-sequel-syndrome: with the formula already perfected, it has to come up with new ideas to keep the game fresh. Some of those ideas work, others are unnecessary, and some of them just fall completely flat. Sonic 3 is still an excellent game in its own right, but it is bogged down by the need to do something new.

Sonic & Knuckles is just a part of Sonic 3, as far as I'm concerned. They should've been part of the same game, and they share the same positives and negatives. I do like the way how S3&K manages to tell an interesting story with only the simplest of story devices.

I haven't played enough of Sonic CD to make a good judgment, but it doesn't work as well for me as the other Sonic games do. The level design is just plain messy, the time travel stuff - while certainly a nice idea - overcomplicates the gameplay and disrupts the flow of the game, and Sonic somehow looks and feel weird in this game. I'm sure there's plenty to like about Sonic CD, but I have yet to see it.

All the other Sonic games... I'm not even going to bother mentioning them. The only highlight I can think of is Sonic Adventure's first level, but that's about it.

Sonic 2 to me is the perfect Sonic game. Its simplicity, combined with the absolutely perfect execution of all its elements, makes it a game I will never get bored of. I really wish Sega would someday go back to Sonic's roots, strip it from all the baggage it has collected throughout the years, and produce a minimalistic Sonic game that truly lives up to the legacy of the first two games.

Sonic 2 is definitely the best for me. It's the definitive Sonic game, IMO. I love everything about it. Wonderful levels, superb music, great boss battles, neat graphics etc.

Sonic 1 is my second favourite. Sonic 3, I like it alot, but it's missing some of the magic from the first two Sonic games, IMO. Some of the levels are not as fun or interesting, like Carnival Night Zone or Hydrocity Zone etc.
