The "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" campaign of the 2nd half of 1990 did *not* launch the Genesis in the United States.

What did?

"We Bring The Arcade Experience Home"
and Your World Will Never Be The Same" campaign(s) of late 1989 and early 1990 did.

I'm also looking for the Genesis introduction ad from August-September 1989, it used to be on Youtube but was taken down. It's the one where a kid walks into a huge dark room with dozens of kids playing NES games bored out of their minds. Then on a huge screen is Genesis Altered Beast.

I remember that commercial, good times.

What I don't remember is the TeleGenesis modem: did that ever actually come out?

edit: nevermind--Melf's article about this and other early modem & network devices for consoles is the #1 Google hit for "telegenesis modem." Helps to search, especially this site!

I was looking for that commercial last week on youtube but could'nt find it, but saw lots of other ones I'd never seen before. I saw it about a year ago and the video and sound were really bad, maybe thats why it's not on there any more.

Yeah, WELCOMETOTHENEXTLEVEL began in late 1992, around the launch of the Sega CD, although it was used to advertise Sega in general.

The only Genesis ad I really didn't like was the "blast processing" nonsense.

I love how the game is played on a crappy micro-TV and the text says the photo is unaltered.

I kind of find it odd that they used Super Mario Kart as the comparison against Sonic in that add, it would have made a lot more sense to use Super Mario World.

It looks like this commercial:

Look like that was one of the earliest, but not the first. It seems like it shares some aspects with the very first introductory launch ad, the large screen with Altered Beast.

Yes, that's the one Chris, exactly. It had bad quality video & audio.

I think Super Mario World was too old when that ad came out, but yeah, Mario Kart didn't really suit it.

It was probably about comparing speed and showing when the SNES had speedy games, they weren't as speedy as Genesis games. Using one (the only?) with the familiar Mario brand is natural, so I think it fits.
