View Full Version : Which are the best Dreamcast-games out there?
nissling
06-29-2009, 07:10 PM
Recently, I bought a PAL-Dreamcast with some other Dreamcast-related stuff and about 14 complete games. Some of the games were Sonic Adventure 1-2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Sega rally, Chu Chu Rocket, Daytona Usa, Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi 2, Ecco: The Dolphin and some more. It costed me around 660 SEK, which is about 85 dollars. It felt like an ok deal.
Now, don't give me wrong, for over a year ago, I had a Dreamcast but I thougt it sucked. The reason for that was probebly becuse I didn't have any good games at all. The only good games I had was Sonic Adventure (1) and Dead Or Alive 2. Most of the rest was just sports games. I was a bit unlucky so I sold it, but for some months ago, a friend told me that Dreamcast was the best Sega-console ever made. Then I just said to myself "Ok, I think that I was wrong about the Dreamcast".
But now, when I finally got my hands on one with some good games, which are the other games that are worth checking out? Both of the Shenmue-games seems to be good and it looks like Power Stone is something for me. There's got to be some games for the Dreamcast that are worth owning. Which are they?

Mr Driller and the original Crazy Taxi are brilliant party games: IIRC the first has a splitscreen multiplayer mode, and for Crazy Taxi you pass the controller and score attack.

I wouldn't call the Dreamcast Sega's best console, but it's still a pretty good machine.

Out of the games I own, I would recommend:
Demolition Racer - No Exit (AWESOME destruction derby/racing game hybrid, tons of unlockables, it will keep you busy for months)
Seaman (not really a game, but still I have to recommend it, there's literally nothing else like it)
Tennis 2K2 (sequel to Virtua Tennis, with more content and a create-a-player mode, this game is like crack and all your friends will love it, seriously)
The Typing of the Dead (this is a blast, basically just typing tutor, skinned with House of the Dead 2, but it's hilarious and really the only reason to own a DC keyboard these days)
Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram (pretty unique, I still want to get the twin sticks if I can ever find them for a decent price...)
I would have recommended Sonic Adventure, Chu Chu Rocket and Jet Grind Radio too if you didn't already have 'em. The first Crazy Taxi can be had fairly cheaply, that might be looking into if you like the sequel enough.
Personally, I would recommend you NOT get Phantasy Star Online/ver. 2, they just are not that fun to play with by yourself. It's just basically an endless grind for better equipment, and this type of gameplay really falters imo when you go at it alone. You technically can get your DC online with private servers, but it's kind of more trouble than it's worth.

I thought Headhunter was excellent, not mediocre. Grandia II is also excellent, and the only turn-based RPG on the system worth a damn. Bangai-O is one of my favorite games ever. I also recommend Shadow Man and Toy Commander, two very underrated games.

Oh yeah, Grandia II is the shit. I actually like that one more than Skies of Arcadia (which I have admittedly only played on GameCube, and have also never finished). Bangai-O is awesome from what I have played, and it's a Treasure game on a Sega console so that should be a no-brainer for anyone who frequents this site.

It's complete crap. It's also one of the few games that was programmed using Windows CE.
I had a DC that was having issues with the texture maps and the end result was funky colors and extremely grainy textures. The one game that looked right was Incoming and I don't know if it had to do with the way CE uses the memory buffers, or that the game was using some other technique to draw the polygon textures. Either way, the worst game I had in my collection, was the only one that would work. :(

I got that game for free, bundled with an OEM PC running windows 98SE, in 1999.
I thought it was 'shareware level' entertainment, and had to laugh when I seen it ported to consoles.

Incoming was one of those showcase games for 3D accelerators, which were relatively new at the time. It looked pretty stellar at the time, but the rest of the game is as shallow as a petri dish.
By the way, if you like Street Fighter II, then you can't miss up on the arcade perfect port of Super Street Fighter II X: Grand Master Challenge that was made for the DC. Japan only, but oh so worth the effort getting it.

OH well, it's good to see that you've actually gotten one. Some of my favorite games on the system I think I've told you, but I'll say them again:
Sonic Adventure
Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 and 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Power Stone
Crazy Taxy

The worst part about collecting for the DC in my opinion, is the aftermarket is flooded with broken games that had their scratches removed like a standard CD. This KILLS DC games.
I bought a seemingly mint copy of Mortal Kombat Gold that's a glorified coaster from a used game store.
If you're ever doing the same, be sure to look at the actual disk closely, you might see a wavy pattern in the reflection, it wouldn't hurt to ask either.

He's correct but instead of getting Virtua Tennis 1, I would suggest Virtua Tennis 2 (AKA Tennis 2k2).
This is an updated version of of the game, so you may as well get the superior sequel instead of the original.
Just a thought.

Tennis 2K2 has a black spine and manual. Since it was one of the last games for the DC it didn't get the chance to be put into the All-Star list.
I found my copy recently at a flea market for $20 Brand new factory sealed.

Was it brand new factory sealed? If it was it was probably because it was 5 years ago and they were just trying to get the DC games out of there. Now they are more of a collectors item. I've seen Brand New Tennis 2k2 copies for $40-60 dollars on Amazon and half.com.

I got a sealed copy of Tennis 2K2 last year on eBay. $10 shipped. And there were multiple copies going for roughly that price, all sealed.

Amazon though still has one new copy going for $40 dollars. I guess they didn't get the memo.

Yeah, it's not that Virtua Tennis 2 would be any worse than the first game or rare or super expansive or anything - I just really like the original Virtua Tennis. I think that it's slightly easier for the inexperienced to learn so it's more fun in multiplayer, and also it seems that they spent less work on the female player characters in VT2 than they did with the male players which they took from VT1. The female models just don't look as realistic so that makes the overall visual experience appear a bit unbalanced.
I know it's really minor nitpicks, and VT2 overall probably still is the better game, but that's why I'd recommend VT1.

Yeah, it was brand new. The Toys R Us in my neighborhood had it, and the other sports titles that weren't selling, sitting on a shelf for months. VT 2K2 was everywhere, years after the DC was gone.

I'm pleased with my collection and I really don't have time to play anymore games then I already have.

I was disappointed with DUX. I guess I don't understand why they chose to imitate R-Type so closely when there's been so much development in the genre over the 20 (?) years since that game's release. Archaic source == archaic product. Or maybe it's because I've become too used to bullet hell vert shmups... I don't play too many horis anymore.

I would argue that the 360 is this. Except for, you know, the shitty failure rate. No matter how much I love Microsoft for what they've done RIGHT this generation, I'll never forgive them for the four Red Rings I've had to endure.
