View Full Version : How YOU can help fight spam

If I understand correctly, all new members need to be approved by an Admin before they are allowed to post on the site. However there are likely tons upon tons of spambots that have registered in the past and are waiting to strike. If you notice someone that might be a spambot, post their membername here and we will investigate/ban them.
Some tips:
-Look for members with very odd names. Names that probably aren't easily pronounceable. Names like "SmepawSlalt" would be a good example, but they get even weirder.
-Look at their profiles. If under "Biography" they have listed Man as a response, it is 100% definitely a spambot. They may or may not have filled in the other fields with some weird shit. Usually their Wii Friend Code is their username since an actual human isn't inputting the information and the program registering the spambot gets confused and just enters crap like that.
-If you see any members with questionable links in their signatures, please report it here.
-If any member Private Messages you with spam, report it here immediately.
-If you see a new member which is obviously a spammer with a name like Free Porn XXX or whatever, that nice individual will have to be approved and obviously will not make the cut. No need to report that. Only look for existing members.
-Also, be sure to use the "Report Post" feature of the forums if a spammer actually makes a post. It helps us delete the post forever much more quickly. The location of the Report Post button varies depending on the forum skin you use, but it should be under your the avatar near the bottom of the post.
Thanks!
Flygon

It could help to make the 'report' button a bit more prominent, when I first saw the spam I never saw any immediate 'report' button.

embrakilia, NexCenANymn, percyalwin, Retasnaws, undodsSok
Suggestion: delete all members with 0 posts. If there are any real people behind any, and they want to post in the future, they can just make a new account.

Updated original post with this info. Banned Zebbe's noted friends. If I had more Admin access I could purge those with zero posts.
I purge them every 2 months or so, so that's not a problem. Most of them don't confirm their registration via email, so they sit there in forum purgatory until I nuke them.

Do NOT quote spam posts EVER!!!. That just makes it more work for us because then we must find and edit/delete YOUR post as well to remove the spam in addition to the actual spammer's posts. This could also get you grouped in with the spammer and banned permanently along with it.
Just a link to the post (preferably the thread) is fine.
Also do not respond to spam because then I must delete the responses since it would be useless to have responses to a post that doesn't exist. That can also get you grouped in and banned accidentally. It makes it much more difficult for us to clean stuff up.
If stuff like this keeps up, I am not even going to bother to delete spam posts or ban spammers. I will just let them roam free here.

Joe Redifer
08-20-2009, 03:45 AM
The forums come with a standard CAPTCHA or something like that but in the version I mess with it is broken. Digitipress or whatever they are likely downloaded and installed a PAID add-on which increases security. Also, ours is version 3.7.4. What version is theirs?
jesus.arnold
08-20-2009, 12:10 PM
I was getting 4-5 spambots a day on my forums until I found this
http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/custom-profile-fields-as-an-anti-spammer-tool/
You just copy out what it says into the "custom profile fields" section of the admin part of the forum, I used the "Numbers Method" but I'd imagine you could use a question such as "who is the fastest blue hedgehog alive" or something in the same way.
Joe Redifer
08-20-2009, 05:28 PM
We don't use PHPBB, though.

08-20-2009, 07:24 PM
Oops sorry LOL, I thought you did as it seemed as though the forum looked like the default PHPBB design from what I remember, other wise I would've checked the bottom of the page.

So basically you are suggesting adding a custom field and if it is not answered or answered incorrectly, then they do not get approved?
Yes. Example:
"Are you a bot or human? (Type human)"
____
That's a perfect example of a question like that.
Joe Redifer
08-20-2009, 11:32 PM
I do like that idea, but that requires that we check every single new member individually, of which there could be 50+ per day. Also, that option does not come up until the member is already registered, clicks on their e-mail and taken to their profile. They may not even see that they can enter stuff. I would love to do it if it can be applied to the initial registration before e-mail verification.
At www.the-magicbox.com, I added a few custom fields like Favorite games and "System or Company you are biased towards". Anyone who fills either or both of those out correctly automatically gets approved by me. Usually the bots will just put a spam link in the Favorite Games field, or their member name or something else stupid.
Joe Redifer
08-21-2009, 12:06 AM
WAITAMINUTE!!!!
OK, this can indeed be done easily! At least I think so. I tried this over on magicbox and it works, but we have 3.8.x and this is 3.7.4
Melf will need to do this as I do not seem to have access to the full Admin Control Panel.
Go into the Human Verification settings. Choose "Question and Answer". Edit the question to something like "What color is Sonic the Hedgehog?" (that is the question I chose at magicbox). Save. Go to edit answer and just type "blue" (no quotes). Save. Should work perfectly! I may change the question if it is too easy for bots to register.
Also, many have already registered that may trigger spam posts at a later date. They don't all attack immediately.
jesus.arnold
08-21-2009, 01:47 PM
So basically you are suggesting adding a custom field and if it is not answered or answered incorrectly, then they do not get approved? The question appears on the "Register" section with the rest of the signing up questions, If the question is answered incorrectly then the bot can't register to join up to the forum at all.
Joe Redifer
08-21-2009, 05:05 PM
Apparently not all bots are bots as they register. Some are answering my question correctly at the-magicbox and still getting through (even with the "Man" stuff in the biography). Gentlegamer got through, if that says anything! :) However there are far fewer that get through and it makes it much easier to check each individual profile. Right now my question is "What is a popular abbreviation for the Playstation 2?"

Thankfully it did not happen to me here, but on another board I was actually hit by a spambot and it could not be the dumbest thing I ever seen...and I have seen some real dumb things before. I get this message supposedly from this young African woman claiming that she fell in love with me via my profile. Like here, on that other board my profile isn't much. She them asks me to send her an email so we can get to know each other better. Which I did, no joke I was sent 2 images supposedly of her I know I seen on Facebook. I figured it had to be a scam, so I sent an email back claiming to be on the verge of bankruptcy. The next email I get is one of those typical Nigerian spam scams.

OK we probably still have some members who are spambots who will post in the next week or two, but after that the spam should slow significantly, perhaps even stop all together. There is a random question which needs to be answered upon registration. I have enabled this feature. It stops spambots cold in their tracks.
Due to this Q&A thing, I have changed the number of posts necessary to start a new thread from 10 to 1. It will still take up to an hour or so for the forum to auto-promote new users after that 1 post.

When I registered my account, I almost gave a smartass answer to the question "How many 'bits' is the Genesis?"
I didn't realize it was meant to trap spambots until searching the forum to find out what that question was for.
I suggest that the purpose of the question be labeled/explained in some way so dense people like me don't screw it up. :)

I was spam-botted by Gorsassepay, to this link: http://theblogmoney.com/ , but it seems like an interesting site and mahybe they offer some interesting ideas or writing or something for me to read. Not sure if they are trustworthy yet. Maybe not. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren't.

Depends by what "bits" you're talking about. There's 512 kilobits of main RAM, for example. :) SNK called their system "24 bit", and by their logic the Genesis would be 24 as well.
I was going to say 3. The console, the controller, and the altered beast cart.
I knew what they meant though, so no problem once I did a search and realized it was a spambot trap.

I don't kare what SNK called their system. SEGA was an American company. David Rosen. Unstoppable. We rule. The Genesis was 16-bit. Plain and symple. You know why? Because the processor was 16 bits. The graphics and sound are accessories. The fundamental unit of the machine is the processor, because that's the computer. you're using a computer when you play a game machine. You can still program the genesis without using the graphics or audio or controllers.
stalepie
12-04-2009, 11:35 AM
The bits of the RAM only matter in relation to how the processor uses them -- how much can feed through the processor gates at one time.

And people like me do not let signatures be displayed (I think any and all signatures look... tacky at best). So thanks for posting this. BANNED before even one post could be made.
I'd totally be up for turning off the signatures feature altogether. It's completely useless and creates clutter and is now a new way for spammers to attack. If you have something to say, put it in your profile page. There is NOTHING so important that it needs to be displayed every single time one posts in the body of the post itself.

I didn't have a problem with you till you insulted Guntz for no really good reason, well lets look at the facts and see how many rules you broke that Phantar warned you about already,
- Try to refrain from double posting - BROKE
- If someone disagrees with or critizises you, don't throw a hissy fit, and don't abuse the report button, unlike a certain fella who recently managed to get himself banned three times within roughly a week -THIS ONE YOU BROKE BY INSULTING GUNTZ BECAUSE HE DIDN'T TRUST YOU.
- Stay honest. If you realize you made a mistake, accept it. Don't do stuff like this here (creating a new thread than editing out all content after you got your answer), because that is annoying as heck and just clutters up the forum. THIS ONE YOU ALSO BROKE by changing your post from,

I'm willing to bet that "taylaheiss22" is a spambot, judging by the links in their profile.

Well they're still here and still spammy.

The forum's member list is broken. It doesn't display every user. I think they need to have a minimum of 11 posts before they show up.

While you're at it you'll also want to take out http://www.sega-16.com/forum/member.php?29670-Elisa12 .
Can we rethink the registration system? It seems that a Lot of the new registers are pure spam.

I note a lot of recent registrants list their occupation as "Real Estate Broker/Owner". So far they have no posts or outside links, but that's gotta be spam.

http://www.sega-16.com/forum/member.php?29662 - This one's blatently spam.
It seems like half of the recent registrations have been total spam. I think it's time to do something about that.

Some of these people don't have any posts. You must be patient. You can't be caught spamming without, you know, spamming.

Look at their profiles. They're spammers.

Only JohnVasanth looks to be a spammer french real estate bot. Jamila is spamming with aims towards women looking for plastic surgery and stay at home moms. But Jerry looks like an honest-to-goodness lurker who just happens to be a real estate agent.

The 3rd account doesn't have anything malicious, so can't ban that one. But if it's another spam account and it starts trouble, then it'll get banned. The other two are banned though for their insubordination...I mean spammy links.
Thanks for your support soldier!

I strongly suspect that Jerry is a spammer, given that

http://www.sega-16.com/forum/member.php?29662
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/member.php?29669
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/member.php?29665
and
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/member.php?29663
all registered at about the same time and ALL say they're real estate agents.
To confirm, would someone try contacting them?
Also don't forget http://www.sega-16.com/forum/member.php?29671-ragavalakshmirai . Note the visitor message.

Can we PLEASE do something about this?

You should enjoy yourself on the site more rather than just going off searching for pointless accounts the whole time.

Agreed dude. Thanks for showing us this, but we don't really know who is a spambot until they start posting. These accounts aren't developed enough so they don't post at all, so it's not a huge deal. And we don't want to make it too hard to make an account because it's hard if you have to get mod approval on every single account that's made. And even still you can't tell.
