This is a sort of random topic but anyway, post the 5 most expensive games you own and why you bought them.
Castlevania Dracula X (PC Engine) - Price paid 105$, bought it because it's the best Castlevania game ever. I owned this game before Chronicles dropped but I doubt the sound on that one is as good this ones.
Radiant Silvergun (Saturn) - Price paid 110$, bought it because of all the hype. I'm not sure if any game is worth 150$ but this game is great nonetheless.
Panorama Cotton - (Genesis) - Price Paid 120$? - I can't remember exactly how much I paid but I'm sure it was expensive. I haven't played this game a whole lot, mainly because it kicks my ass.
Panzer Dragoon Saga (Sega Saturn) - Price paid 140$ - Probably pound for pound the most expensive game I own. I actually owned this game before and sold it, so getting it recently for 140$ isn't too bad of a price. The atmosphere in this game is almost unparalleled by anything else I've ever played. I mainly rebought this because the last copy I owned had a problem on the 4th disc that caused it to stop during the ending(yeah of all places).
Snatcher - (Sega CD) - Price Paid ?$(Can't remember how much it was but I think I found someone selling the instructions/case and got that on the cheap and then just picked up a disc only copy) - Along with Sonic CD and the Lunar games this is probably the main reason to own a Sega CD. I normally don't go for this type of genre but Snatcher is so well done it's hard not to like. I was surprised at the voice acting given this game came out in 94'.

Lunar 2 The Eternal Blue Complete: Cost about 1000 kr back when it was released and I got it. Waited forever to get it, but it was worth it. I loved the prequel and played this one 7 hrs a day for a week until I finally beat it. Haven't touched it since.
Panorama Cotton ($150), Eliminate Down ($180), Slap Fight ($150 I think) and Snow Bros. (I don't know, maybe $200): I bought these because I collect ultr@ r@re Mega Drive games. Panorama Cotton was the only one that was actually worth its money to me.

Pulstar Neo Geo CD ($75-150)
Metal Slug 2 Neo Geo CD ($50)
MUSHA Genesis Complete ($40-$80)
Rockman in Mega World Mega Drive ($100-150)
Mars Matrix Dreamcast ($50-80)
(Possible) Splatterhouse 3 Genesis ($70-100) (At least this is what its been going for in the wild around here)
(I USED TO OWN:
Radiant Silvergun
Snatcher (Sega CD)
Guardian Heroes
Metal Slug 3 and 4 (US AES Carts) (500 and 350 respectively, picked up Metal Slug 3 for around $200 and 4 for $50 from a comics store!!)
NeoVamp
07-14-2009, 09:20 AM
King of Fighters 2003 (MVS) - $150 back in the day when it was still kinda new.
It's probably Terranigma in mint condition for 1200 kr.
Then there are a bunch of game near the 1000 mark, but they're kinda hard to rank.

1. Mars Matrix
2. Sword of the Beserk
3. Lightening Force (I think this one is expensive)
4. Shenmue II
All I could think of was 4.

LaserActive:
- Triad Stone
- Pyramid Patrol
- Rocket Coaster
- Hyperion
- Space berseker
I haven't checked all of them but some go for around $150. I only own these because my dad was obsessed with the LA when I was a kid :)
Nowadays I'd never buy a game for more than 300 kr. I think games are way too expensive compared to other media.

I have several titles that are worth some decent money now, but I'd bought them when they first came out, so the price wasn't over the top. Buying a game for the N64 in 1996 however, was pretty expensive.
Games I paid a lot for:
Shemnue 2 (DC-Europe): Thanks to Sega's wonderful deal with MS, we didn't get Shenmue 2 for the DC. I ended up paying around $70 for this European import.
Super Mario 64: Yeah, the N64 was only $149.99 at launch. It's too bad I had to pay $79, that's right, $79 for the greatest 3D platformer ever. This game is great and all, but there's no way it was worth that much.
Star Wars - SOTE (N64): Thanks to the huge catalog of games available for the N64 in it's first year, I was suckered into paying $69 for this great looking Star Wars game, only available on the N64. I should have just went back to playing the PSX and Saturn, because not only is this one of the worst Star Wars games, it was also one of the most over-hyped.
Pilot Wings 64: I'm not quite sure if I paid $69 or $79 for this title (I'm out of town right now) , but no matter what it was, this game was worth every penny. This is one of my favorite games on the mighty N64.
Border Down: I was lucky enough to get the last copy my nearby import store had. The case had a crack in it, but I was still willing to put down the $65 the store was asking for it. It's one of the best shooters on the DC and well worth the extra $20 or so it demanded.
(Yeah, I know, you said 5, but this one deserves mention) Rock Band (360): Technically, the game was only $60, but if you wanted to play this game the way it was meant to be played, it was $189 for the whole kit.
Games that increased in value, but I didn't pay a ton for:
Dragon Force (Sat): Hate Working Designs if you must, but they did North American gamers a huge favor by porting this great SRPG.
Panzer Dragoon Saga: I knew this game was going to go quickly, so I plunked down 100% of the money for a reserved copy. I was stupid not to buy a second copy of this game, when I saw it at TRU for $20.
Jacks Bros. (VB): It appears that the Japanese version of this rare Virtual Boy title, is selling for $29 new, but I've seen the North American version sitting around the $70 range. I was lucky enough to buy this game complete, from a nearby Blockbuster store when they were clearing out their game section.
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (DC): I paid maybe $30 for this mint copy of MVC2 at Gamestop. I know the PS2 and Xbox versions are worth about $65 and I'm pretty sure the DC version is as well. The price will probably come down though, since it is now available through PSN and Live.
Guardian Heroes (Sat): I believe I only paid $39.99 for this game at Babbages. It's a fun game, but I wouldn't pay over $60 for it.

Radiant Silvergun - (£180) - even tho the game cost me about £140 I had to pay an extra £40 import duty when it arrived. Grrr.
Rock Band - (£140) - rare? No. expensive? Hell yes. esp in the UK.
Musha Aleste - (£80) - really difficult to get hold of in the UK.
I also have quite a few games that I bought for standard price at the time (Nights, Last Hope, Kula World, R-Type Delta, Snatcher, Castlevania SOTN), who's value has risen since.

Only 2 but I paid around $60 for Giant Gram 2000 (DC Import) & $80 for Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 (N64 import) back when they came out. Worth every penny. I refuse to pay anything like that for ANY game nowadays. If I can get a used copy for €20 or so I'm happy.

How is Giant Gram?
Excellent. I was initially very impressed with the graphics and arcadey style of play. I don't play it that much (now that I got King of Colosseum 2) but it's certainly different. Graphics are excellent and the combo system is good but takes time to get used to.

Wow this thread makes me feel great:
-DoDonPachi (SAT) $64.00
-Ghostbusters (PS3) $64.85
-Mega Bomberman (PAL) ~$40.00
That's it. Now most of my other PS3 games were more than $40, but I never paid retail for any of them minus Ghostbusters. I get all my other games on the cheap I guess :)

Well Neo Turf Masters and Shock Troopers on the Neo Geo would be the most I have ever spent on any game, coming in at close to $200 or so each. But I do have a lot of games that I bought for the original price or below before they became supa-valuable, like:
Radiant Silvergun
Sokyugurentai
Battle Garegga
Sengoku Blade
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Guardian Heroes
Snatcher
Dracula X
Panorama Cotton (paid $60 complete)
MUSHA
Crusader of Centy
and many more that I can't think of right now.

Sega Saturn:
Astra Superstars $98+
Panzer Dragoon Saga $150+
Hyper Duel $100+
Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru $300+
Sega Dreamcast:
Trigger Heart Exelica + OST $189+

Hmm... the most expensive game I have ever bought was the Warcraft III Collector's Edition, which was $75. I don't think that I have ever bought anything else that cost over $55 or $60 at most, and few of my games cost over $50. I had PC and Game Boy, not NES or SNES or Genesis, then, and games on those systems didn't cost as much. I did get an N64 later, but I got it mid-gen, and by that time most games were $50 or under; I didn't spend over $50 for anything.
As for what my most valuable game is now, I'm not sure, but I'd put my first guess on my complete (box, manual, discs, etc) copy of the Quest for Glory Anthology. Got it for $5 used from a store that didn't know its value, back about five years ago... yeah, that was completely awesome. :)

It's great when that happens - at the checkout your kinda hoping they don't suddenly realise :D
The majority of these games were bought before they were considered expensive:
1. Radiant Silvergun (originally bought for $65 from NCS)
2. Hyper Duel (originally bought for $55 at Tronix)
3. Harmful Park (paid $110 for it from a Japanese Ebay store)
4. M.U.S.H.A. (originally bought for $29 at Children's Palace)
5. Orge Battle (Originally bought for $59 at Chips N Bits)
I have many more but the OP wanted five.

So just yesterday, I found out that I passed up on a considerable rarity that's supposedly worth a lot. That game is "Intelligent Cube" for the psx, goes for an average of $80.
I saw it at this pawn shop out of town last week, in a tub of random psx games for $3 each, mint and complete. Needless to say, I'm taking another 40 minute drive back down there for that thing. All I can hope is that there isn't another collector who just walks in there and spots it, or knows it's value. I don't think that's likely *knocks on wood*, because it's a pretty small area.
If I get to snag that thing it'll probably be the most valuable game in my collection.

I'm gonna say
-Little Samson for NES
-Earthbound for SNES
-I've heard Shining Force has value to it
-Blackthorne 32x. Really, the only retro game I've spent over $20 next to
-Phantasy Star SMS.
I really hate buying games at inflated prices, and really, the thrill of the bargain hunt is so exhilarating. All of these were gotten at pawn shops, save for Blackthorne and Phantasy Star.

Star Trek Bridge Commander (between 30 and 60 euros)
Star Trek Klingon Academy (around 20 euros)
Starfleet Command 2 (between 40 and 50 euros)
Planescape: Torment (around 30)

It is an alright checkpoint shooter, from the little I've seen of it up until the 3rd stage. Might not be the best thing out there, but sure isn't crap.
I waited for months until adol put it on sale on ebay. Haven't seen one for sale since then, so I guess I was lucky.
Games I paid lots for:
Panorama Cotton & Teacup - £120
Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen - £50
Gouketsuji Ichizoku - £50 (only £30 inc before customs charges - thanks again, y'fugginbzz)
Doraemon stationary box-set - around £35 I think. It's cute, but pricey considering.
Then there's stuff like Gleylancer (£30) and Twinkle Tale (£20) - probably quite a few rareish things I've paid around that much for. I try to shop around 'til I can find stuff cheap - my collection would be 2/3 the size it is if I hadn't.

As far as I remember there are only three games I have paid more than normal retail prices:
Dracula X PCE $129 - Awesome, but I eventually traded it for a PSP and some games. Good deal both ways.
Garou MOTW MVS $95 - This was worth it. One of my favorite fighters.
Xmen vs Street Fighter Saturn $100 - I paid $80 for the game and $20 for the import converter, it was well worth it back in the day. The game is near worthless now, but I don't regret the purchase.
I do have a lot of games that are worth a pretty penny, but I didn't pay much for:
Earthbound SNES complete: $7
Neo Drift Out MVS $10
Aero Fighters 3 MVS $10
Matrimelee MVS $20
...um, that's all I can think of for now but I'm sure there are dozens of others. I tend to buy the quirky stuff on clearance, and then they end up costing a lot a few years down the road.
I also paid pretty much nothing for most of my Genesis systems, and I've had pretty much everything except for the Laseractive at one point or another. In the Saturn/PSX era, people were literally giving me the systems since nobody was buying them but I was the weirdo that still played 16 bit games.

Border Down (http://video-games.shop.ebay.com/Video-Games-/1249/i.html?_nkw=Border+Down&_catref=1&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282) really went up in price, as did Radiant Silvergun. Border Down starts hitting the $400 range, I might sell it.

"Project Justice" (Dreamcast; rarest U.S DC fighting game, one of the Top 5 most expensive U.S DC games, usually goes for $60+)

Hoooooooooooooly fuck. Border Down got expensive. Glad to be done with DC, or at least in a good spot if I want to get anything else.

Golden Tee Golf add on course disk for the PC. I got the disk off of Incredible Tech's website back in the day for $20. Now I've seen it on Ebay for $80+. I had no idea it was in that big of demand.

I got most of my rare games in the past 11 years for way below the prices they normally go for at local independent used game stores, and used book stores. I did pay alot for a few games I couldn't find local though. I think my most expensive rare games are:
1. crows the battle action (sega saturn) $120
2. rockman megaworld (megadrive) $100
3. dungeons and dragons collection (sega saturn) $90
4. yu yu Hakusho: makyou toitsusen (megadrive) $80
5. popful mail + strategy guide both brand new (sega cd) $80

yeah I know what you mean, most of those I bought around 2004-2007 back when I could afford rare games before I moved into my own place. how much did you find d & d collection for?

It's like $109... a lot of people know about the site, so you could buy it online. But it's nice to see it in person.
Hah, I'm moving out right now... so... yeah. I mean, I am in pretty good shape to get my place furnished and settled in, but oh well rather be ready and set than buying D&D Collection.

I bought D&D Collection again recently, finally found one with the box and ram cart for relatively cheap. I'll probably end up selling it though because I'm getting more into arcade stuff since I picked up the Astro City Cab.

thats not too bad of a price for it but it can be found a bit cheaper these days, theres actually one on ebay at the moment for $50 with no bids. it's quite a fun game though and worth the money whenever you decide to buy one in the future.
thats cool that your getting your own place, the freedom of having your own place is great. the only downfall of that is...the bills and rent.
