I am a fan of Golden Axe 3.

*small amount of applause*

Yes, I know. It's hard to admit. It's even more hard to admit that I now want to get a copy of it. Unfortunately, I am a PAL machine. Apparently, Golden Axe 3 will work on a PAL machine, but you actually need to get it into the machine. I don't want to take a knife to my Megadrive, so I am asking this question.

If you know of The Game Adapter, mayhap you can help me. It's like a Honey Bee cart. Would that allow me to play Golden Axe 3 on my megadrive? I take it what I have heard is true and that it doesn't have lock-out concerning the megadrive.

Hi Damien. How are you? That's good to hear. As for myself, I am fine.

Golden Axe 3 has regional lockout built into the software. The only way to play it would be with a Game Genie. However I'm not sure if that will help you on a PAL system or not. I think something exists called a Pro Action Replay. That sounds like something from Europe so I bet that would work. You'll need to get the PAR codes to allow that game to play.

I'm not sure if Golden Axe 3 has lockout based on PAL/NTSC though. There is the Japanese version and then there is a version that has a little round sticker on the front of the box that says "Asian Version" which is in English, naturally. One of those or both of those might work, or neither of them. Maybe someone else has better answers?

Yeah, I was thinking that. From a few weeks ago when someone was selling a lot of them on eBay, he said it would work on a PAL system, but that it simply needed a way to actually get into the megadrive. That is why I was thinking of the Honey Bee connector. I will double check that information though; don't want to be left in the cold with a game I can't play.

That's the sort of evidence I have. It's not very strong, but it's all I really have to go on.

Here's a Gamegenie code:
BT7T-CA9E
AA7T-CA9R

This allows you to play it on a non-Japanese system.

FAQ here: http://www.whipassgaming.com/genesisreviews/genesisimportfaq.htm

It seems there are a lot more "Asian" copies of GA3 than Japanese versions, for those wondering, they are the same game. Asian versions are the same game, nearly the same packaging, but they might have an extra manual or two for other asian countries, the game is untouched tho.

Thanks. :)

Now all I need is to get ahold of a Game Genie. Probably far easier said then done.

I think it's the same as the Action Replay or something like that? I'd buy Golden Axe 3 anyway.

Well yes, I might as well. We'll see how things go.

Golden Axe 3 is not really as rare as that eBay site would lead you to believe. Pro Action Replay is completely different than Game Genie. Does Game Genie work on PAL systems? I have the Asian Version Golden Axe 3 and all of the box/manual/cratridge and whatnot is in Japanese. No other Asian languages. The box is the same except it has an "Asian version" sticker on it that you don't want to try and remove. My game has English text in-game. Not sure if the Japanese version proper does.

Asian versions of games and systems are always the same as the Japanese version, except sometimes they might add a manual or two, usually in English or Chinese. But other times they might just be the Japanese game with a sticker on the case, and no other difference, like Golden Axe 3.

Varries from game to game.

I have a friend who has an Asian Version of Shining Force 2, but he can't find any Game Genie codes to get it to run in his US Sega Genesis (it says only for PAL/SECAM when you boot it up normally). I have heard that the in-game text is in English, but there is no way to find out without a GG code.

The Game Genie is non-regionlocked, as a quick pointer. I have no idea whether it was released in the East or not, though - I've never seen a Japanese cheat cart, come to think of it.

Oh, and the thread author has a Rocket Knight Adventures avatar. Hoorah!

Ah yes. Made it myself using a primitive GIF editor and a sprite sheet. Axle is so great. :)
