"Spider-Man" removed and recolored in VC edition of Revenge of Shinobi!

Hardcore SEGA fans will no doubt be aware that Revenge of Shinobi on the Mega Drive / Genesis had a few incarnations during its lifetime due to copyright issues. It’s a proud person who still owns the original Mega Drive cart which features boss characters such as The Hulk, The Terminator, Spider-Man, Batman and even Godzilla!

Two further versions of the game were released in subsequent months to avoid any nasty copyright issues, but Spider-Man remained intact as the level 6 boss as SEGA were able to officially license the famous Marvel superhero, with a credit even appearing on the title screen. Fast forward to 2009 and we were curious to find out what has become of the Spider-Man boss in the Virtual Console release of Revenge of Shinobi. Predictably Spidey is no more and is now replaced by a pink web-slinger instead, and Batman is still the mutated form that we found in the later versions of the Mega Drive cart.

Guess that was what was holding up the game's re-release after all these years. Troubles with the "Spider-Man" license. It missed the cut on both the PS2 & PS3/360 Genesis compilations. Now they've figured out how to circumvent it.........too little, too late I should say. Did they re-color or entirely redraw that sprite?

I saw the pic of the finished product. It looks like a pink upside down ninja. What boggles my mind is why they chose the color pink?! There are millions of other colors to choose from.....but....come on, who agreed to pink? I wonder if they even changed the web attack to a bolo attack.

I suppose this one will be dumped eventually, so it can join the rest of the REV family in their nice ROMset house.

I hope other developers learn their lesson from this. Do you guys remember when City of Heroes was getting sued by Marvel because some of the characters the players made looked too much like their copyrighted works?

- Japanese Wikipedia article on Super Shinobi (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ザ・スーパー忍) says that they released the modified 1990 version in March. that should be the one without Batman and Godzilla but with Spiderman.

I meant that they released the 1990 version in March 2009. I am not sure exactly when they released the 1990 revisions, and I think it's possible that we never got the original.

Europe got both 1990 versions, with and without Godzilla.

There was no European version with Batman and the faked "morphing" Spidey however, as those are 1989 versions.

I think that it was probably one of the only colors they could use to clearly avoid possible copyright infringement, since not only has Spiderman himself had many costume variants, at one point Marvel was pumping out a full rainbow of colored Venom/Carnage characters.
