20 years old! One more year and we can go out drinking together. Right now the Genesis is my designated driver! ;)

In the style of the Beatles "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

"It was 20 years ago today, Sega Genesis I had to play, Nintendo was out of style, Sega Commercials really made me smile, So let me introduce to you, The system you'll play for years!!! Sega Genesis Sixteen Bit Console Yeah!!!"

Everyone Sing Along!

The song that ushered in a new era in video games. Somehow Keith Courage's music just didn't have the same effect. :D

Over 20 years later, I must say I'm still impressed by the clarity and the percussion in AB's music.

Phantasy Star II is my moment of Genesis music glory. :p

Ah such a glorious day and I don't even know if I'll get to play my Genny tonight. I am going to a kegger though and my buddy has his Genesis hooked up at the house so I might take my Sonic Classics and 6-Pak carts over there and do that instead. Happy 20th Sega Genesis you truly are a classy piece of hardware.

Genny birthday marathon continues!

Playing Revenge of Shinobi . . . I can't get past the waterfall stage! Either my controller sucks or the controls in this game aren't what I remembered. I can never get the sommersault jump to work when I need it.

Release timeframes of all the Genesis launch games, plus many of the big games from 1990. The actual release time of some of these may surprise you, like Phantasy Star II which did not reach U.S. retail until early 1990, despite having a copyright of 1989.

Day one (August-September 1989, no later than nationwide rollout September 15)
Altered Beast
Super Thunder Blade
Space Harrier II
Tommy Lasorda Baseball
Thunder Force II
Last Battle

very near launch (September-October 1989)
*Ghouls 'N Ghosts
*Super Hang On
*World Championship Soccer
*Arnold Palmer's Tournament Golf

a few months after launch but still within 1989 (November-December)
*Forgotten Worlds
*Rambo III
*Golden Axe
*Revenge Of Shinobi
*Zoom!

early 1990
*Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
*Mystic Defender
*Phantasy Star II (actual U.S. Genesis release was March or April 1990, even though copyright is 1989, it was not out here in the U.S. during 1989 except on Megadrive in Japan!)
*Herzog Zwei
*Air Diver
*Super Hydlide
*Truxton

mid 1990 (almost a year after launch)
*Pat Riley Basketball
*Ghostbusters (summer 1990)
*Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (August 1990)
*After Burner II
*Super Monaco GP

late 1990 (a year+ after launch)
*Sword of Vermilion
*Thunder Force III
*Strider

It's interesting to know that, around the time Phantasy Star II finally reached us in the U.S., (March or April 1990), Japan was getting Phantasy Star III (April 1990)!

Phantasy Star II came out in Japan in March 1989, before Sega announced the Megadrive would be coming to the United States as the Genesis, and also, I suspect, before most gamers even *knew* Sega had a 16-bit console out in Japan and headed to the western world. I mean, I think very few people had read about the Megadrive in videogame magazines by March 1989. I know I myself didn't hear about Sega's 16-bit plans until June 1989 when Sega put the information about Genesis into a recorded message at 1-800-USA-SEGA.

Playing Revenge of Shinobi . . . I can't get past the waterfall stage! Either my controller sucks or the controls in this game aren't what I remembered. I can never get the sommersault jump to work when I need it.

It's usually the controller in combination with bad timing. The 'Ninjutsu of Fushin' (the one that let's you jump higher) helps with that level, but with some exercise you should be able to easily beat that stage without it.

I hit jump and keep the C button compressed and quickly re-press it. Works every time.

Do not release the C-button.

Just wait until you're at the Pier.
