Seriously, is this the only way to mod a Genesis 3 for S-Video and Stereo?

Ugly or not that is quite an impressive mod.

nope, its not the only way, that board hanging out is just a expansion board from a VGA connector, he just made it that way with a external RGB-2-S-video composite output.

Genesis 3 a.k.a. "The Puck".

Anyone has a better guide for Stereo and S-Video?

That is very ugly. Blue LED's are soooo passe. Everyone who opens up their system these days ends up putting a blue LED in. How original.

The way he mounted those region switches looks pretty ugly too. :yuck:

S-Video mod for the Genny 3 (as well as VA-4 M2 and some VA-3's -all that have the CXA1645 video encoder chip) is very simple to S-Video mod, way easier than earlier models (which require an additional video amp, inless you use the "simple" mod, which only works on some TV's), though Many model 2's (pre VA-4) have a crappy Samsung encoder which has poor video output and cannot even be modded for S-Video...

Anyway for the Genny 3 (and others with CXA1645), the mos basicly involves soldering a couple resistors tot he Chroma and Luma output pins on the chip, and then wiring those to the coresponding points of an S-Video jack (along with the soldering grounded wires to ground lines for the jack)

Not sure about stereo, Ace mentioned previously that TmEE's "Crystal Clear Audio Mod" would probably be the simplest solution. (and have the best sound quality on top of that, granted the Genny 3 already has pretty good sound quality -like the VA-3/4 M2, albeit mono)

Edit: http://sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7796 As mentioned there, the CXA1645 mod involves placing a 75 ohm resistor on each the Chroma and Luma lines (not sure which ones these are, on the CXA1145 it's pins 15 and 16, not that this would necessarily corespond) along with a coupling capacitor on each as well. (for full compatibility)

I have never had a Puck, but I'm quite sure that there's enough room to fit all that dangling outside into it... well, something with same purpose as what's outside.

What's the cable coming out the side anyway?

TmEE, certainly, there's no need for that mess, an S-Video mos would take up basicly no space at all (inless someone was misguided enough to use the RGB ouputs and a additional encoder rather than the onboard CXA1645), and then you could add you Crystal Clear Audio mod and have stereo. (and even cleaner sound than a stock Genesis 3 -or VA3/4)

I'm not sure about the placement of the additional AV jacks (though you could put the sound on the standard Sega jack rather than RCA's, and/or add a headphone/phono jack), otherwise thy might have to go on the side rather than the back. (you could probably fit an S-Video jack on the back easily enough, maybe along with the headphone jack -and not bother with composite ouside of the Sega jack)

That big board is actually not an S-Video converter, but rather an RGB to Component video converter, which I believe was custom-made by the modder himself.

Couldn't agree more. As much as blue power LEDs look cool, with everyone using them, they're starting to get old. How about replacing them by color-changing LEDs(I have a color-changing LED in my VA4 Genesis 2)?

LOL so did I but only because the stock LED blew and I happened to have a blue one from an old HP computer lying around.

I saw the video you made of the LED replacement on YouTube. And considering you painted that entire Genesis Model 1 black along with the "POWER ON" section of the bezel white, having a blue power LED makes it really look nice.

Yeah, your VA7 Model 1, with the white EU megadrive style trim peice. (would have been tougher to paint had it not been a VA7, earlier models have the trim painted on rather than a separate plastic peice)

I did it because I painted the red part around the led blue so I needed a blue LED (blue = Sega logo color). Plus I wanted to do something to customize it since its modded and not a stock system.

But damn the led I got is crazy bright. You can't look directly at it.

Blue LEDs seem bright enough to blind you. I happened to stare directly into one just before power was applied to it(it was inside a Genesis 2). Ouch!

Well.... it's NOT a S-Video mod. It's a Component Video mod!

There is no way you can fit a RGB -> Component converter inside a Genesis 3 ;)

How does the picture look with a component video mod? Has anyone done internal component modding for the other Genesis systems? That makes this much cooler:)

Yep. It's a component video converter board. The best alternative for the people in the US, after the RGB type... In my modiffied Mega Drive 2, I have a changing color LED, that changes his color in every 3 seconds. I think he can compose 7 colors...

BTW: Ace, you've got PM...
