I was tempted to get both but am wondering what is the best option.

I think I'd use my SNES more, but Gameboy Player for Gamecube plays all of the Color titles and the Advance titles. But I am just wondering what people's opinions of both of them are here? Thanks.

I haven't used the GC player, but I do know there are quite a few nice GBA games and not really a whole lot of good normal GB games (tetris, pokemon, mario, kirby, ...done). Only problem is GBA games are still kinda pricey, but there are easy to obtain flashcarts IIRC and emulation is always an option as well. However, the Super Gameboy is practically free and isn't half bad, something about listening to the Super Mario Land music just makes me happy.

I own both. The Game Boy Player isn't able to take advantage of the extra features in Super Game Boy games (custom backgrounds, colors, etc), and I still have a Super Game Boy for precisely that reason. But if I had to pick just one, I would definitely go for the Game Boy Player, no contest. IMO the GBA library is better than the entire 8-bit Game Boy library combined.

If I had only one option, I'd go for the Gameboy Player. Although it sounds to me you have some original gameboy games in mind. In which case, because of the above stated reason, the Super Gameboy might be just the thing for you. Knowing me, I'd get both anyways. But since I currently don't have either a SNES or a GC, I'll stick to my GBA SP for now.

You guys are totally nuts, the original Gameboy has an obscenely huge library of classic games.

What Jesus.Arnold said.

Also, the Gameboy Player can also play original Gameboy and Gameboy Color games, so you might as well get that one, right?

not really a whole lot of good normal GB games (tetris, pokemon, mario, kirby, ...done).

You're neglecting bucketloads of great to good GB games. First and foremost would be Link's Awakening.

There are a ton of good Game Boy games, but to be honest, I have a Super Game Boy and I don't see the appeal of it. I prefer to play the games on my Game Boy, playing with the SNES controller (or Gamecube for that matter with the Game Boy Player) isn't my thing.

I agree with the second statement. That's why, in the event that he intends to play a number of original gameboy games, I suggested a Super Gameboy.

I own both, and the Gameboy Player gets the most use. On thinking of it, I like the GC controller better.

I own both but the GBA Player with a EZ Flash IV lite wins! I own alot of gba games, but when you can easily just put all those roms on the flashcart and start another game without pulling/inserting game wins!

I picked up a GBA player for $20, and usually see a Super Gameboy for $5!! Its a steal for both.

LOL, only paid $40 for my Platinum GC as it is, soo cheap and now modded with Xeno2.0, Purple power LED (looks awesome and kinda SNES'ish with purple/platinum colors). Hell of a system for about $105! (NGC/GBA Player/Xeno2.0/EZ Flash IV Lite)

If I were you, I wouldn't jump on the Super GameBoy. Unless you're used to soldering to surface-mount chips, that is. The Super GameBoy is, for some really weird reason, overclocked compared to a real GameBoy. This makes games run faster(not very noticeable, oddly enough) and makes the sound come out REALLY high pitched(this is VERY obvious). The Super GameBoy does have some features that the GameBoy Player doesn't, so it'd be a good thing to own if you want those extras and don't mind the sound/speed issue.

The GameBoy Player is the ultimate piece for playing GameBoy games on a TV. It's compatible with the entire GameBoy lineup of games, while the Super GameBoy is only compatible with GameBoy B&W or dual B&W/Color games(those in the black casings). It can't, however, make use of the extra features of the Super GameBoy.

My take: get a GameBoy Player. And if you can solder on surface-mount components(or can get someone to do the soldering job for you), get a Super GameBoy and underclock it to the GameBoy "Brick"'s proper speed for perfect speed and sound. Or, if you don't mind the extra speed and increase in sound pitch, get both the GameBoy Player and Super GameBoy. I personally have both the GameBoy Player and the Super GameBoy(I own 2 Super GameBoys, actually, one that's underclocked and modded with a power LED and another that's never been opened and will remain stock).

I would probably pick up the Super Gameboy first, as I play a lot more SNES than I do GC, because it's easier to find, and it's most likely cheaper than the GC one.

Plus, it was a lot cooler when it first came out. I remember my neighbor had one, and we marathonned the GB version of DK for days.

Get both. The SGB is essential for the many titles that support it for SGB-exclusive features like special backgrounds, color palettes that can change from level to level, added sound, support for multiplayer via the SNES controllers, etc. The GB Player, though, is needed to play GBC and GBA games on a TV. Play original GB games with the SGB, because it's better... but use the GBP for GBC and GBA games, because you've got no other choice. The SGB is just awesome, I'd definitely highly recommend it. Check for grey-cart games with the Super Game Boy logo on the cart, and check your black-cart GBC games, because some of those have GBC features as well... :)

(The Lion King has a SGB logo on the cart, but no SGB features. There might be one or two other such games out there. For the most part though the logo is accurate.)

For me the Gameboy Player is more convenient for the simple fact that it can play GB, GBC & GBA carts. Just make sure that if you buy it, it comes with the start-up disc!
