View Full Version : Sega-CD vs. Mega-CD music?

Hi all,

I was having a discussion in the Slightly Dark music forum about the differences between the music in "Sega-CD" versus "Mega-CD" games. For instance, Sonic CD (the only one I can think of) has different music for each version. Are there any other games that have different or changed music betweeen the various regions?

Here is the other discussion thread:
http://www.slightlydark.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3417

By the way, I'm a big Sega-CD fan myself (Model 1 only) and I've just added several "attract mode" introduction sequence movies of Sega-CD games to my page at Youtube if anyone is interested in seeing them.

EDIT (4/26/06): Added a few new videos yesterday including Popful Mail, Shining Force CD and Keio Flying Squadron.

I think Sonic CD is the only game to have a different soundtrack.

They changed the music on the system ITSELF. The model 1 Mega CD had kind of cool music as the Mega CD logo spun around. Then the model 1 Sega CD came out and we were graced with the gawdawful BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM SCREECH SCREECH SCCREECH SCREEEEEECH!!! The model 2 had slightly better system music. I have no idea about the EU versions as they don't count. :D

My question is this: Why does the Sega CD itself need startup music anyway? It adds an air of cheesiness. It's bad enough listening to the synthesized "Say-gah!" tone along with two Sonic rings as the CD boots. And the fruity colors on the US version that cycle in the Sega CD logo are pretty lame as well.

I know about that for the hardware, but I was talking gamewise. As for the bios... the EU systems have the same startup music as the US ones.

No one has dumped the bios for the Model 2 Japanese Mega CD hardware... The only Japanese bios online are for the model 1. I've always wondered how it differs.

Point 1: The European Mega-CDs share the same tune between both models. The US model 1 and model 2 tunes are entirely different to the European and Japanese models; however, the Japanese model 1 plays the same tune as the European Mega-CDs.

Point 2: The Japanese model 2 is apparently the MCD and Sega logo 'dancing' around a resized Sonic sprite. No idea what the tune is, if any.

I'd love to have a high quality MP3 of each different startup tune...can those of you with the Mega-CD systems (and have the means to record it) possibly do this?

I can start off with recording from my own US model 1, so we would just need the other regions as follows:

Sega-CD US Model 1: To be done via JAMMAPARTS
Sega-CD US Model 2: ?
Mega-CD European Model 1 & 2, Japanese Model 1 (same according to Elusive): ?
Mega-CD Japanese Model 2: ?
Sega CDX/Xeye (all in one units): ?

I will be forever indebted to those of you who help record the other tunes (record about 5 mins long for good measure). If you can't host the files yourself I can do that once we get them all so everyone can have them.

Thank you!

Here's Quicktimes of The US and Japanese model 1 units that I made a looooong time ago:

Mega CD (Japanese) model 1 (http://pixelcraze.film-tech.net/crap/megacd.mov) - 1.2 MB

Sega CD model 1 (http://pixelcraze.film-tech.net/crap/segacd.mov) - 3.4 MB (with the really crappy music)

Why the american model didn't make full use of the PCM capabilities is beyond me.

That's the one. The Japanese music is used in both European models. If you want to record the music, surely you can just get it through the Mega Drive model 1's headphones port?

Yes, like he says it's very simple to record the audio...I'm just hoping someone can take the time to do this!

Thanks everyone for all your help (and Joe for the movies).

Which Sonic CD version has the best soundtrack?

We've been over that subject a thousand times already.

Listen for your self. It's all personal opinion, really.

What do you mean?

The US model uses PCM sound... you'll notice if you unplug the mixer cable from the segaCD to the genny a lot of the sounds are missing when you use the RCA jacks from the back of the SegaCD. If you use the audio jacks on the RF unit of the genny it isn't missing.

I meant the boot music.

I was able to make high-quality VBR MP3's of the Sega-CD US Model 1 & 2 intro, and also the Mega-CD intro (European Model 1 & 2, Japanese Model 1) themes. If anyone is interested in having them, pm me and I can give you the link to download from my server (limited bandwidth).

We still need the Japanese Model 2, if anyone knows someone who can help get that one that would be great.

I would love to have that intro too either video or just auido. I know a few people who have the system but so far have either been unwilling or unable to capture any audio or video from their system....I may just have to break down and get one of these units myself...
