Buzz up!

As expected, football favorite Madden NFL 10 was the top-selling video game in August, shifting almost two million copies in just over two weeks. But it wasn't all good news for Madden or publisher EA: the Wii version of the game sold a mere 67,000 copies, roughly half of last year's figure.

Nintendo Wii not quite a touchdown.
For a title that was touted as having been rebuilt from the ground up to provide gamers a better experience, that's a disappointing number -- and EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich thinks Madden 09 Wii is to blame.

"I believe many diehard Madden fans, who transitioned from the Playstation 2 to the Wii, made their yearly Madden purchase in 2008 and realized that the Wii could not offer the same experience they have grown accustom to (online play, realistic graphics, in-depth team management)," he told gaming blog Joystiq today. Madden NFL 10's PS2 version -- yes, they're still making them -- outsold the Wii game by more than two to one.

Divnich also laid some of the blame at the Wii's unique control system, wondering if long-time Madden fans were reluctant to switch away from the familiar gamepads of consoles past. Madden fans, he said, "know that Madden cannot offer the same experience on the Wii as it did for the PS2."

Looks like it can’t offer the same experience for EA shareholders, either

FUCK! EA and to think they ended up dissin the DC all those years ago. I'm sure the DC could've sold that many copies of Madden in like an hour.

PS2 is going to outlast PS3, I've never seen something so ridiculous as the former console outselling the successor when the successor has been out, especially for so long.

How about Atari 2600 and its successor 5200 (and 7800 too), Baloo? :P

How quickly we forget the Saturn.

I'm sure Baloo didn't even know the existence of the 5200 and 7800... When did you get a Sega CD Baloo, last year?!!

Thank GOD. The game is basically EA saying "yeah, the system is for babies". What's funny is that the previous two sold fairly well. For a Nintendo 3rd party game at least.

Bollocks! (British curse words are fun!) The PS3 just dropped to $300 so we are really just entering the PS3 era. The PS2 is still selling well because it's always been a damn good system and is a good buy for people moving out and needing a DVD player ($100 plus it plays games, how can you lose?). The used library of cheap and good games for the PS2 is unreal so it is by far the best value in video games around if you exclude emulation. Don't forget, there are tons of PS2 sales for just Rockband and Guitar Hero alone.

Once Hi-Def TVs become more and more prominent and people start adopting the idea of Blu-Ray, I think PS3 will come into its own. One good thing you can say about Sony is that they don't fuck around when it comes to lifespan. They build a console and stick behind it. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the hardware either, they just need to get better software support. Remember, the Genesis was a fairly big flop at first, it wasn't until Sonic rocked the world that it got the ball rolling.

7800 was discontinued simultaneously with 2600 in 1992, similar to Nintendo with the Famicom and Super Famicom. But 5200 is definitely a good exanple of predicessor outlasting successor, and of Atari Inc's problems in general.

Dude, don't try and make stupid shit up like that, I know what the 5200 and 7200 are. I simply forgot it. And what does me getting a Sega CD at whatever time have to do with anything?

The Genesis/Saturn doesn't count due to the fact that support was cut for the Genesis and everything else and focused onto the Saturn.

Umm... back on topic... I honestly don't see how EA could have thought that Madden sales would keep going up forever. Like production capacity is the only thing keep every man woman and child from owning multiple cross-platform versions.

If there is 250,000 copies of Wii Madden 2010 sitting unsold then it is a big deal, but just underselling the 360 version and PS2 version isn't really a disaster. That's like complaining that the SNES version of Madden 95 undersold the Genesis version. Of course, because all sports games players owned a Genesis.

Hopefully EA anticipated this.

In America, the Genesis outsold the Saturn except in the second half of '96 and the very beginning of '97. And you could buy a new Genesis in stores later than you could buy a new Saturn in stores. Although now that I think of it, I'm not sure whether Frogger came before or after Magic Knight Rayearth.

To be fair, there aren't many Wii games period that sell well that aren't mini-game collections. Just look at the sales of Carnival Games.
