Hey,
How was Super Double Dragon on the SNES? Was it better then the Double Dragons on the NES and SMS?
Or is it just one of the remakes that really didn't hold up to the original?

This is the funnest Double Dragon. Awesome game to have in the collection. I would play it all the time.
Special moves were the coolest ever!

Edge, I actually have this game, although I've yet to try it out. I've been meaning to give it a shot since you've asked about it before; maybe tonight's the night!

Second best game in the DD series, next to "Double Dragon Advance", though both are really neck-in-neck IMO.
It may have tiny as hell sprites, but the gameplay is great and the Lee brothers have a variety of striking moves, "Power Up" moves, grapples and reversals. The game is decently long as well.
The Japanese version, "Return of Double Dragon" (released a few weeks after SDD) is a bit better due to an extended final stage and new arragement of the level BGM's. Both games were rushed however, and lack any semblance of an ending or storyline. The developer behind the game wanted to include them but couldn't due to time constraints.

I'll recommend you to avoid that kind of fighting games for the SNES, enemy frequency is always very low, only 3 to 4 enemies onscreen at once, that causes the game to get boring and repetitive after a few hours of beating the same 2 or 3 palette swaps using the same techniques again and again.
The SNES cant handle this type of games, the 3,58mhz cpu isn't enough, stick with the SOR games on the Genesis.

Take Streets of Rage, dumb down the combat, slow down the gameplay, make the enemies fucking assholes, throw in some fairly interesting environments, and you get Super Double Dragon. That's the gist of it. I must say, the environments are really cool, like a runway and inside a building with punching bags you can actually punch and what not. Still, overpriced for what it is, I'd pay about $5 for it.

Compared to the more fast paced games, Super double dragon is a more sophisticated beat em up.
It replaces beating the crap out of bad guys strategy most prevalent in this era of games with the strategy of when to block their attacks, then beat the crap out of them.
From what I have seen its the only other game I've seen where you can use a bo staff and nun-chucks as weapons. I recommends this as there are few *If not any*games out there like this. :D

It's one of my absolute favorite beat 'em ups. It is true that it's a bit slower-paced and has fewer enemies, as is typical for SNES. But it has really great gameplay. Aarzak is right about the Japanese version being a bit better -- it's not a huge difference, but the soundtrack is better arranged, the last stage is expanded, and you can catch and reuse the boomerang weapon (in the US version, you throw it once and you're done with it).

Those sound effects are really bad in Super Double Dragon. So muffled.

We've actually had this game since we got our SNES used in ~1996, stil complete in box... and I've never played it... Same for SFII, except I tried that out a few times over this summer. (they both got packed away along with a football game after we got the system, given I was ~7 at the time with a 2 year old brother) Heh, not much of a beat 'em up fan, but might as well try it.

It's one of the slowest Double Dragon's, but still better than any incarnation of DD3. My personal favorite is 2 for the nes. Once you get past it's funky control scheme it's awesome.

I just played it yesterday on my SNES emulator and was surprised to see that you can reverse a move and then kick the crap out of the guy. It's very difficult though. I actually lost a life on the first 3 guys that appeared.

Still remember playing for the First time.. a good game with pretty in depth fighting mechanics for the time.. Indivdual punch and kick buttons, block, the ability to grab an opponet from their attack, weapons, charge moves... fun game.. and i Love those tunes..
