In case anyone missed it, forum member Tony H found new region bypass Game Genie codes for a couple Japanese exclusive Mega Drive games. Here's the quote:
One code bypasses the regional check, and the other code (the "master" code) bypasses the checksum routine (you must use both codes).
Doraemon - Yume Dorobouto 7 Nin No Gozansu (J)...
A35T-AA6W
Lets you play the Japanese cartridge on a US Genesis console.
CV5T-AA84
Master code (must use with code above).
Aah!_Harimanada_(J)
B3CT-AA64
Lets you play the Japanese cart on a US Genesis console.
I've tested both on actual US hardware. They work like a charm! Very helpful info for those who don't want to mod a system (like myself; shame on me).
Additionally, Tony H found a US region bypass code for Daze Before Christmas: EAAT-BL1T.
Melf, it may be worthwhile to update your Importing Made Easy feature with this info. Surely someone with a US machine is dying for some 16-bit robotic cat / manga sumo wrestling / Santa Claus action!
Thanks again, Tony H. If you're willing and able, I'd appreciate US region bypass codes for Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, Tant-R, and Ichidant-R (aka Puzzle & Action: Tant-R, and Puzzle & Action: Ichidant-R). So would my nephew. :)

I made a code for Sailor Moon just now that works in an emulator with the TMSS BIOS enabled, could you check it on your system for me?
It's three lines:
REYA-A60W
REYA-A60Y
REYA-A600
Good luck!
EDIT: Also went ahead and made a Tanto R code, if you get a chance test this as well:
AABT-AA5T
AACA-AA2N
RECA-A6TY
RECA-A6T0
EDIT 2: And if you're feeling super ambitious, here's an Ichidant R code for you to try:
AADA-AA8N
REDT-A60C
REDT-A60E
REDT-A60L
REDT-A60N
All of them worked in Fusion, let me know if they work on your real system.

Do you think this could be done with Shane Warne Cricket. When I run it on real hardware the screen just rolls. I think I may need a PAL switch though.

Hey guys, been going to this site for awhile and I love it. First time posting and I was wondering if anyone knows the game genie code to to play Dragon Ball Z: Bu Yu Retsuden? Can't seem to find it. Thanks.

Thanks. That one should play without modification, at least it does for me. I just use a Game Genie as a pass-through and it works. Are you talking about the French version? That might be displayed in a 50 Hz refresh rate which I'm fairly sure you can't toggle with a Game Genie code (for some games at least). Same for Shane Warne Cricket, I'm afraid.

Oh, and re: Dragon Ball Z: Bu Yu Retsuden. My Japanese copy plays fine with Game Genie as a passthrough. No codes needed.

Mugenmidget, I'm not trying to step on any toes here, but I thought I'd show you a few pointers on how to shorten your regional bypass codes from several codes down to just one or two codes.
I'll use Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon as an example...
You used 3 codes, but it can be done in just one code. There are several different ways to bypass the regional check with just one code, but this one is probably the best:
Game Genie code = AJWA-AA7L / Hex code = 0024AA:6002
Here is the assembly trace log of the game starting correctly (passing the regional check)...
00:24AA 4E BA JSR $0426(PC) A0=FFFFFD0A A1=00002AFC A2=00000000 A3=00000000 A4=00000000 A5=00000000 A6=00000000 A7=00FFFFFE D0=00000000 D1=0000FFFF D2=00000000 D3=00000000 D4=00000000 D5=00000000 D6=00000000 D7=00000000 xNzvc

--------------------------------------------
Your 3 codes NOP'd $28D2, $28D4, AND $28D6, which works fine, but if you look at the assembly above, you can see that it starts at $24AA and jumps to $28D2, does it's check, then RTS's (returns) to $24AE and continues on. The code I made just branches (jumps) right from $24AA to $24AE and therefore completely skips all the regional check in the middle of the assembly trace.
Here are some other ways to make a regional lockout bypass with just one code...
$28DC:6004, or $28DC:4E75, or $28D2:600E.
The last one there ($28D2:600E) uses the same ROM address as one of your codes, but instead of NOP'ing it (4E71) and NOP'ing the next 2 addresses, I just branched it to the RTS.
Hope that helps.
Although I haven't checked, I'm pretty sure the other regional bypass GG codes you posted can be done with fewer codes.
Tony H.
EDIT/P.S.
Glad you guys could use the regional bypass codes. If you need any more, let me know. I'll look into Shane Warne Cricket, but I think Mugenmidget is right... it's probably a 50 Hz refresh rate problem.
EDIT #2:
If someone wants to sticky this, that would be cool.

Regional Lockout Bypass Codes
Version 0.4 Oct 03, 2009
If you have a game/cartridge from a different region and you get a
screen that says something like: "DEVELOPED FOR USE ONLY WITH ....",
or some other screen that won't let you play the game because it's
from the wrong region, then the Game Genie codes below should solve
your problem.
Note that if there is a master code for the game, you will probably
need to use it. The master code bypasses the checksum routine.

"Semi" Universal Regional Lockout Bypass Codes...
If you have a game cartridge from a different region and it won't play
on your console, the codes below MIGHT allow you to bypass the regional
lockout. The codes below will *NOT* work in many cases.
All these codes do is change the country ID letter in the Genesis ROM
header, but not all games use that letter to determine the region.
EAAT-BL1T
"USA" (U). This code will make some non USA cartridges work on a USA
Genesis console.
EAAT-AL1T
"Europe" (E). This code will make some non European cartridges work on
a European Mega Drive console.
EAAT-AY1T
"Japan" (J). This code will make some non Japanese cartridges work on
a Japanese Mega Drive console. Note that on some games, this code will
only work on Japan "NTSC" systems, and not Japan/Hong Kong "PAL" systems.

Sure, John. I'm still not comfortable with assembly so I couldn't find an elegant way to skip the check unfortunately (and I'm still working on improving my others) but at least this time you only need one code:

I was a HUGE Road Rash fan. Most of the track modifying codes I made by just entering random codes. That was long before there were any emulators or debuggers. Some of the track modding codes were glitchy, but some of them were pretty fun. All of the newer Road Rash 2 codes I made using a debugger/emulator, so they will work without any glitches.
If you're a Road Rash 2 fan, this might be of interest...

Question re: Xenon 2 for Megadrive. As it's locked in at a 50 hz signal, will it play on a US machine if the EU region code is bypassed?

Awesome! those codes got my shitty PAL Streets of Rage 2 and Ecco: Tides of Time to display full screen, Streets of Rage 2 is sooooo much better now, I no longer feel like I'm controlling a dwarf through treacle.

Story of Thor - A Successor of The Light (E)...
Bypasses region lockout, but music is sluggish and the screen keeps rolling over and over.

I'll have those codes shortly. I assume you have a US Genesis console?Nah, I have a modded PAL console with a 50/60hz switch, basically I usually boot games up in PAL50 wait until after the region check and switch to 60hz afterwards, unfortunately Streets of Rage 2, Ecco: Tides of Time and Sonic 3 all change their game speed depending on the results of the boot up (at the same time as the region check) so if I do this with them when I change to 60hz it screws everything up.
Using your codes I can start my console up on 60hz, the region check doesn't happen and the game boots in 60hz naturally.
Okay, just finished the codes...Thanks for the help, I appreciate it, though unfortunately the games boot up past the region protection screen but don't work, maybe in these two games the cartridges only contain the information for the PAL versions of the games unlike the other three :(

You're probably right, Story of Thor and Toejam & Earl may not have any NTSC/60hz programming. Bummer. You do have one alternative... Buy a 50hz TV and a 50hz generator. :-)
Jackal, thanks for the info. Based on what you two reported, I don't think this problem can be solved with Game Genie codes.
I am curious to see the difference in programming between a 50hz only game and a 60hz only game.

No, Panic on Funkotron was released in the US, I don't see why it wouldn't have 60hz programming.I don't really understand how it works tbh, do they put the game on the cartridge in two forms? or one small section of code to change the way the main program runs?
If a lot of extra double up code has to be used then maybe size constraints forced them to release two separate specific cartridge versions in this case.
You're probably right, Story of Thor and Toejam & Earl may not have any NTSC/60hz programming. Bummer. You do have one alternative... Buy a 50hz TV and a 50hz generator. :-)Nah, playing them on 50hz is easy for me as my tv displays both 50hz and 60hz and the switch solves everything else.
The problem is the fact that 50hz still displays the picture squashed (all be it less in these games cases than usual) and even more importantly Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis plays like crap on PAL as its slow and unresponsive. My best bet will just be to re-buy imports of them I guess.

I've only done one game for right now. If it works on your system (without a shrunken screen, rolling screen, slow music etc) then I'll do the other codes.
The reason you were getting an orange screen with the "universal" bypass code, is because using the code caused the checksum check to fail. The "universal" bypass code does actually work on this game, but you also need to use a master code to get around the checksum problem. I also made a "regular" regional bypass code for the game, so if you could test them both, that would be great.
Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition (E)
EAAT-BL1T
Universal regional bypass code. (Must also use master code.)
J4ST-AA80
Lets you play the (E) cartridge on a 60hz US Genesis console. (Must also use master code.)
BLAT-AA3R
Master code (must use this code, together with one of the codes above).
So you'll need to use 2 codes (the master, and one of the others). Let me know if both of the bypass codes work (either one of them should work).

Both codes seem to work fine thanks! the game usualy plays the music too fast on 60hz but now its fine.
There is some hum coming from the right speaker but thats probably my TV or the Game Genie doing that I'd imagine.

Just finished the codes for the other game. As before, the "Semi" universal code works on this game, but I also made a regular type regional bypass code. Test both codes and let me know the results (I'm adding all the info everyone gives me to my file, and it'll be in the next version/update).
This game also needs a master code.
Super Street Fighter II (E)
EAAT-BL1T
Semi universal regional bypass code.
JKVT-AA94
Lets you play the 50hz (E) version on a US 60hz Genesis system.
NA7T-AA9G

Xenon 2 plays fine on US hardware with the code! Well, it never played "fine" to begin with, but that's another matter. It completes my Mega Drive & Master System shooter collection, and for that, I'm thankful! Appreciate your efforts, mugenmidget and Tony H!

Tony H, is there any possibilty you could please do a Game Genie code to bypass the region lockout on Soliel (the UK version of Crusader of Centy)?
No problem, I just need to know a couple things...
Which cartridge do you have: E, F, G, or S ? (I think that's European, French, German, and Spanish).
Also, are you playing on a US Genesis console?
P.S.
jesus.arnold, did the codes for Super Street Fighter II (E) work?
P.P.S. You're welcome John8248 (although mugenmidget did most of the work on your codes).

Does anyone know the code to unlock the Wily Tower on Rockman Megaworld? The same used on Wily Wars doesn't work.

Pressing my luck here...
If one had the appropriate region bypass Game Genie code(s), would roms of unlicensed games play on a flash cart? Specifically, I'd like to play Super Bubble Bobble MD, Smart Mouse, and Top Shooter on actual US Genesis hardware. Perhaps I haven't dug around enough, but every version of those roms fails when tested on hardware (Bubble Bobble freezes at title screen; Smart Mouse fades to black 10 seconds in; Top Shooter merely displays attract mode).
As discussed elsewhere, unlicensed games apparently have unique means of preventing pirates further pirate pirated games. Say that fast 5 times! As I understand it, there's often dumps of the original rom (with copy protection) AND dumps with the protection hacked out. Game Genie / PAR codes make Bubble Bobble and Smart Mouse playable on Fusion (I don't have codes to test Top Shooter). Would a Game Genie bypass code do the trick on actual hardware?

My guess would be "yes". You said that every version of the ROM fails on hardware. Was that with or without Game Genie codes?
EDIT: I guess what I'm asking is, if you tested it on real hardware (and it failed), were you not able to try Game Genie codes then (ie. the GG codes that make it playable on Fusion)?

My apologies. To clarify, I'm looking into having reproductions made of those games. The individual who tested the roms on hardware doesn't have a GG. I was hoping to find an answer without having to send that person a GG.
When testing various versions of roms for each game without codes, they all failed in the ways I described in my previous post - even the versions that ran fine in Fusion. Out of hundreds of games, I only know of a couple that run correctly in Fusion on US settings, but are unplayable (i.e., rolling screen, etc) on a US Genesis. I'm a bit hesitant to move forward given these games' success in Fusion and failure on a Genny.
Sorry for not being more clear earlier! :daze:

I don't blame you for being hesitant. I just don't know for sure if it would work or not. Like I said before, my guess would be yes, but I'm not sure.
If your friend has a flash cart, you could always hack the Game Genie codes into a ROM and have him test the hacked ROM. Then there's no need to send him a GG.

One more quick correction, Tony. The bypass codes I have for those games are Pro Action Replay codes, not GG. Here they are:
Smart Mouse: 0008BC:604E
Super Bubble Bobble MD: 0123E4:602A
Would someone be so kind as to translate those into Game Genie codes?
Many thanks again!

Here are the Game Genie codes...
Smart Mouse: 0008BC:604E = K2EA-AA76
Super Bubble Bobble MD: 0123E4:602A = FJVT-CA9E
If you're planning on hacking the GG codes into the ROM, then you'd want them in the hex format that they were already in (ie. 0008BC:604E and 0123E4:602A). Hacking a hex code into a Genesis/MD ROM is relatively easy. The first step in hacking a GG code into a ROM is converting the GG code into a hex code (which you already have). You called them PAR codes (Pro Action Replay), I call then hex codes... they're the same thing.
If you have a hex editor, or if you know how to use one, let me know and I'll give you a quick lesson on how to hack a GG code or a hex code into a Genesis/MD ROM. If not, I can hack the codes into the ROMs for you and email them to you.

Wow, that's really going above and beyond the call of duty. I'm afraid I don't have access to a hex editor, but if you're willing to look into this and email me the ROMs, that'd be ridiculously cool. Please check your PM's momentarily.

1) Was the master code needed or not?
2) Did the game run properly (no rolling screen, music playing at the right speed)?

I'm not sure if the Ichidant R code was already improved, but I've reduced it to two lines now:
AADA-AA8N
A2DT-AA8C
Tony, if you could look at these some time and let me know if there's a way to reduce it to one line that would be awesome. Right now it's bypassing a checksum test along with a region routine, but maybe there's a way to jump from the checksum test? If you have the time and don't mind, let me know. Thanks!

BTW, I only tested your shortened codes for Ichidant-R. Convenience is king.

Top Shooter merely displays attract mode).
Top Shooter is an arcade game that uses bootleg Genesis hardware. The game ROM can't be played on a Genesis / Mega Drive because it is expecting you to INSERT COIN, which of course, is not possible. The game would need to be hacked to remove the need for coin insertion, instead mapping that function to the START button or something similar.
At any rate there isn't much of a purpose to "play" this game; Top Shooter is a ticket game, from what I understand. If playing on the Genesis / Mega Drive, there wouldn't be much for you to do except... not win tickets.
http://www.superfighter.com/temp/bballeater.gif
If you do, however, wish to get Top Shooter working on a flash card, it is possible. You still can't "play" it, but you CAN watch the attract mode. The game does an SRAM check, so when you flash the ROM to your flash card, put it in the first game slot and enable SRAM saving. I have / use the Tototek flash card, so I can't give instructions for any other device. No "codes" are needed to get the game working. Just keep in mind, like I said, you can't actually "play" it.

Interesting. I'd drop a quarter (or whatever) in it.
On a related note, I've got a prize for the first person to mod a Genny to dispense tickets.
As always, thanks for your unparalleled knowledge of the unlicensed!

mugenmidget, It doesn't look like there's any way to bypass the checksum routine and the regional check with just one code. From 5 codes down to 2 codes... As Mr. Burns from the Simpsons would say... Excellent.
I hope you don't mind if I pick apart one of your codes (constructive criticism).
Your "Master" code (AADA-AA8N) is fine. I probably would have done it the same way.
Your Regional Bypass code (A2DT-AA8C) could be better. Don't get me wrong... your code works fine, but it could be "cleaner".
Here's a quick run down on how I make regional bypass codes. I use Gens Tracer and make one assembly trace log of the game starting properly, then I make another assembly trace log of the game NOT starting properly (ie. getting stuck at the "wrong region" screen). Then I just compare the 2 files by starting at the beginning and following the assembly until there's a difference. It's at that point that you can figure out how to make your regional bypass code. Here's the 2 assembly traces from Ichidant R. I've removed everything except the stuff we need:
STARTS--------------------DOESN'T START
00:07B0 10 39 MOVE.b-----00:07B0 10 39 MOVE.b
00:07B6 33 FC MOVE.w----00:07B6 33 FC MOVE.w
00:07BE 08 00 BTST-------00:07BE 08 00 BTST
00:07C2 66 00 BNE--------00:07C2 66 00 BNE
00:07C6 08 00 BTST-------00:07C6 08 00 BTST
00:07CA 66 00 BNE--------00:07CA 66 00 BNE
00:07CE 4E 75 RTS--------00:07D0 4E B9 JSR
As you can see, everything is exactly the same until we get past 0007CA. That means that something happened at 0007CA to make them take different paths. The one that starts OK goes to 0007CE, and the one that doesn't start OK (the one that failed the regional check), goes to 0007D0. So all you have to do is figure out how to get it to ALWAYS go to 0007CE. In this case, you can change 0007CA from 6600 to 6002, which would cause it to ALWAYS branch (jump) from 07CA to 07CE, then it will RTS (Return).
Other ways that would work just as well... You can have some of the addresses before the RTS branch to the RTS. So 0007C6:6006 would work, and 0007C2:600A would work. Your code was 0007C2:6006 which works fine, but 0007C2:600A would be a little "cleaner" because you're jumping over unwanted stuff.
Here's a little tip that will save you the trouble of having to figure out where to branch your codes to, and these can be even "cleaner". Anytime you have an RTS (4E75) that you want to follow (like above), you can usually change one of the opcode addresses before the RTS into an RTS and that should work. For example, any of these codes should work for Ichidant-R:
0007C2:4E75
0007C6:4E75
0007CA:4E75
Just remember that the 4E75/RTS tip ONLY applies if an RTS is the correct path to follow.
If you can get a regional bypass code down to one code (and one code for a master code if needed), then there may be no reason to make the code "cleaner". I'm just including this in case you wanted to know.
I can see that I've turned your question into something way too long, but I hope this helps.

No, Tony, that was absolutely fantastic. :) I'm studying Computer Architecture in school right now, so I have a lot to learn. Posts like yours are of a tremendous help to my studies and hobbies.
Your approach makes a lot more sense to me, I can see why that is cleaner. I am not that comfortable with making trace logs in Gens Tracer yet but your guides and posts are helpful to that end. Thank you again for such a thorough and thoughtful response, it's very appreciated! :D

Body Count
Cheese Cat-Astrophe Starring Speedy Gonzales
Donald Duck In Maui Mallard

Here's one for Donald Duck, works fine in Fusion:

Let me know how it works on the real hardware once you get it. :) I'll start looking at the others.

Alright, Tony's universal code doesn't seem to work with the Smurfs, so here's a Game Genie code to bypass the region check that works in Fusion:

Okay, finished up the last two. Tony's Universal Region Code for US consoles (EAAT-BL1T) also works with Cheese Cat-Astrophe, so you can import that one with ease. :)
For Body Count it didn't seem to work, so here's one that should be fine (tested in Fusion):
Body Count (E) Region Bypass for US Consoles
AABT-AC82
With that, all of your codes for now are finished. :) Here's all of them together, remember that for Donald Duck and Cheese Cat-Astrophe you can use Tony's universal code (EAAT-BL1T):
Tanto R (J) Region Bypass for US Consoles
AABT-AA5T

-Daze Before Christmas (E) will it run on 60hz system? (if you use bypass codes)
-Megaman the Wily Wars (E) will it run on 60hz system? (if you use bypass codes)

Regional Lockout Bypass Codes
Version 0.5 Oct 31, 2009
What's New ver 0.5: Ecco - Tides of Time, Street Fighter II: SCE, Super Street
Fighter II, Donald Duck In Maui Mallard, Cheese Cat-Astrophe Starring Speedy
Gonzales, Soleil, Tinhead, and added new section on 50/60 hz compatibility
(section 3).
What's new ver 0.4: Aah! Harimanada, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, Doraemon,
Lightening Force, Outrun 2019, Pac-Man 2, Sub Terrania, Virtua Racing.
If you have a game/cartridge from a different region and you get a screen that
says something like: "DEVELOPED FOR USE ONLY WITH ....", or some other screen
that won't let you play the game because it's from the wrong region, then the
Game Genie codes below should solve your problem.
Note that if there is a master code for the game, you will probably need to use
it. The master code bypasses the checksum routine.

Section 2: "Semi" Universal Regional Lockout Bypass Codes...
If the game that you want regional bypass codes for isn't listed above, try
the codes below.
If you have a game cartridge from a different region and it won't play on your
console, the codes below MIGHT allow you to bypass the regional lockout. The
codes below will *NOT* work in many cases.
All these codes do is change the country ID letter in the Genesis ROM header,
but not all games use that letter to determine the region.
EAAT-BL1T
"USA" (U). This code will make some non USA cartridges work on a USA Genesis
console. Try this code if you have a US Genesis console.
EAAT-AL1T
"Europe" (E). This code will make some non European cartridges work on a
European Mega Drive console. Try this code if you have a European Mega Drive.
EAAT-AY1T
"Japan" (J). This code will make some non Japanese cartridges work on a
Japanese Mega Drive console. Try this code if you have a Japanese Mega Drive.
Note that on some games, this code will only work on Japan "NTSC" systems, and
not Japan/Hong Kong "PAL/50hz" systems.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Here's a partial list of games that the codes above will work on...
-Aah! Harimanada (J) (tested on an emulator)
-Castlevania - Bloodlines (tested on real hardware)
-Castlevania - The New Generation (tested on an emulator)
-Cheese Cat-Astrophe Starring Speedy Gonzales
-Daze Before Christmas (tested on real hardware)
-Donald Duck In Maui Mallard
-ECCO - The Tides of Time (tested on real hardware)
-Jurassic Park (tested on an emulator)
-Megaman the Wily Wars (use with master code / see section 1)
-Outrun 2019 (tested on real hardware)
-Sonic 3 (tested on real hardware)
-Sonic Spinball (tested on real hardware)
-Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition (use with master code / section 1)
-Sub Terrania (tested on real hardware)
-Super Street Fighter II (use with master code / see section 1)
If you find any other games that the codes work on, let me know.

Section 3: 50/60 hz compatibility...
Here's a partial list of European/PAL 50 hz cartridges that WON'T run properly
on a US NTSC 60 hz system (Genesis), even if you use regional bypass codes...
-Story of Thor (E)
-Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron (E)
These games will have music that plays at the wrong speed and/or the screen
will keep rolling. Not very playable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a partial list of European/PAL 50 hz cartridges that WILL run properly
on a US NTSC 60 hz system (Genesis), if you use regional bypass codes...
-ECCO - The Tides of Time (E)
-Soleil (E)
-Sonic 3 (E)
-Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition (E)
-Streets of Rage 2 (JE)
-Super Street Fighter II (E)
I would assume that the NTSC/60hz versions of these games (above) would run
properly on a 50 hz system (with a regional bypass code).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a list of cartridges that I *THINK* will run properly on either a 50 hz
or 60 hz system if you use regional bypass codes (but I'm not 100% sure)...
-Art of Fighting (U) should run on 50hz system (if you use bypass codes)
-Daze Before Christmas (E) Should run on 60hz system (if you use bypass codes)
-Megaman the Wily Wars (E) Should run on 60hz system (if you use bypass codes)
-Pac-Man 2 (U) should run on 50hz system (if you use bypass codes)
-Shining Force II (E) Should run on 60hz system (if you use bypass codes)
-Shinobi 3 (U) should run on 50hz system (if you use bypass codes)
When I say that I'm not 100% sure that these games will work in different
regions, all I mean is that I made the codes for someone else and I know the
regional bypass codes worked, but I can't remember for sure if they said that
the game ran correctly (ie. sometimes when you play a 50hz game on a 60hz
system, you'll have fast or slow music and/or a rolling screen).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you can add to these lists (or if there's any mistakes), please email me.

Thanks Tony H, thanks a lot :)
Let me know if the codes work. Also, let me know if the master code is necessary or not (ie. try the first code by itself (BCCT-8A3T) and see if it works. I've noticed that there are a few games that need a master code with an emulator, but not with real hardware.
You're right, Tin Head does not require the master code, i just tried BCCT-8A3T alone and it works fine.

Let us know if there's a problem with it on real hardware.
A code did not seem to be needed for either Tiny Toons game (including ACME All Stars and Buster's Hidden Treasure). Which one did you mean, and what happens when you try to boot it on your system?

No problem.
I'm curious as to why my emulator needs a master code (ie. fails the checksum check) on some games, but the real hardware doesn't. One of these days I'll experiment with other emulators and see if I get the same results.
mugenmidget, you mentioned that Tiny Toons: BHT didn't need a regional bypass code on Fusion. I got stuck on the Konami screen when I tried it on Gens. Maybe Fusion handles regions differently?

Tony, the EAAT-BL1T code doesn't seem to work for Daze Before Christmas on a US Genesis. That said, I have reason to believe that I may have a bad cart. All I get after the TMSS "Produced by..." message is a black screen - no "Developed for PAL systems" message. One would think the PAL disclaimer should boot up at the very least.
I'll report back after I get a chance to look into this over the weekend.
mugenmidget
11-20-2009, 03:21 AM
Tony's universal code works in the emulator, and there's a PAL disclaimer when the code is not activated. Sounds like there's unfortunately a chance that your cartridge is bad, hopefully that's not the case. Interestingly enough, though, Tony's FAQ has a specific code for the game (AABT-AA3J). Have you tried that one?
And Tony, I saw the Konami logo in the emulator and mistook that for the game booting since it wasn't a warning message, I was just too hasty. :) It definitely freezes on the logo in Fusion without codes.

John, did the code/cart ever work? Do you know if the cart runs correctly on a 60 hz Genesis system? (correct music speed, no rolling screen). I'd appreciate any info you can give.
There are 2 different regional bypass codes for Daze Before Christmas (and several other games too). The reason for that is because on several games, I went ahead and made a regional bypass code specifically for a game, only to find out later that the "universal" code worked. Ugh. Anyways, when there are 2 different codes listed for a game, either one of the codes will work. Both codes achieve the same thing, just in different ways.

I think I have a bad copy of the game. I get the "Produced By Sega" TMSS screen, then a black screen. One would think I'd get the "Developed for PAL systems only" message as seen when emulating.
If there's anyone out there who owns Daze Before Christmas:
1) It would be wonderful if you could test it on a US machine, and
2) Happy holidays! Ha.
EDIT: Tony, I get the same result when testing either code. No success yet.

After seeing another post with a similar name, I'm assuming you're the one who wants a regional bypass code for Michael Jackson's Moonwalker? The version you have should work on any Mega drive or Genesis console, with no regional lockout.

As long as the MD cartridge will fit in the Genesis console (I don't own any MD carts, so I can't say for sure, but it should fit), you'll be able to play it without a Game Genie code.
Anthony

I'm 100% sure you won't need a regional bypass Game Genie code. I just looked at the Michael Jackson's Moonwalker ROM, and this is what it shows for the regions that it's made for: JUE... That means it will run in Japan, USA, and Europe. No regional lockout.
As far as your European MD cartridge fitting in a US Genesis console, I'm not 100% sure, so can someone here verify that it will fit?

I just downloaded the "World Series Baseball (U) [!].bin" ROM and entered a Game Genie code, reset the game and it started just fine. No master code is needed. Try a different Game Genie code. If you still get a black screen, then you most likely have dirty connections. Clean the heck out of the cartridge connections, and both sides of the Game Genie.
EDIT: Also try it with no GG codes.
Anthony

World Series Baseball Alone is just fine. But with the game genie......it doesnt work. Can u give me a brief summary of exactly what i should do? When I said "reset", I was referring to an emulator, not a real Genesis.
As I said before, CLEAN your cartridge and your Game Genie. Use Q-tips dipped in isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and clean the electrical connections. Use a new Q-tip as soon as the old one gets very dirty. Keep cleaning until the Q-tips come out clean.
Anthony

omg nooooo..... dude i cleaned everything...the top of the genie the bottom of the game genie the bottom of world series baseball, even the genesis cartridge input with q tips and rubbing alchahol to the best of my ablity and it didnt work. :( I tried just playing the game without entering any codes i have tried all that with the switch on the genie turned off too......i hope its the game....cuz the genie is awesome but the game sucks.

Does anyone have a Game Genie code to play Contra Hard Corps (US) on a PAL machine? Thanks.
Just finished your code...
A2BT-AA78
Lets you play the US cartridge on a PAL/European Mega drive.
All I ask in return is for you to answer a few questions (assuming the code works)...
1) Does the music or sound play too fast or too slow?
2) Does the screen keep rolling while you're playing?
3) If you answered yes to questions 1 or 2, is the game still playable?
Basically, I just want to know if the code works, and if there are any side effects from playing the 60hz cartridge on a 50hz console.
Thanks for the code!
Unfortunately I don't actually have the cart to test it on my Mega Drive, at the moment I'm just planning to get a Game Genie and some import carts in the near future. When I do I'll be sure to let you know. I just wanted to test it on an emulator first to see if its worth buying everything.
So I just used Fusion with a US rom and the region set to Europe. I put the code in and the game played fine (only difference was that it missed out the first screen of white text that says 'TM 1994 Konami' etc, it just went straight to the blue SEGA logo). No rolling screen and the music and sound effects seemed good too. So if it works on Fusion should it be the same with an actual Mega Drive and cart?
Tony H

So if it works on Fusion should it be the same with an actual Mega Drive and cart?
Not necessarily. On Gens (I don't use Fusion), most of the PAL to NTSC and NTSC to PAL ROMs seemed to work fine, even if they don't work too well on real hardware. In other words, most emulators aren't a good indicator of 50/60 hz compatibility. Keep in mind that I have a Genesis, but I don't have any PAL carts. I'm only going by what other people tell me.

Is there a code for Worms? I'm going to be getting a copy shortly, and my understanding is that the game has region lockout. I haven't been able to find a code per se, but I did find a message board thread (http://www.tototek.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=423) which seems to specify the necessary addresses:
I had a few minutes spare at lunch today, and took a quick look at Worms for you... open up the rom in a hexeditor, and change a few bytes like so:-
At $0AC8A8: change 41F9 00A1 0001 to 123C 0038 6026
if you need to fix the cart checksum, also apply the following change:
At $00018E: change 81E0 to B1DF
And the game will run on your NTSC Genesis, although I suspect much too quickly, since the game was optimised/coded for 50hz PAL machines.
Tony H

If you want Game Genie codes, just grab a GG to hex conversion program and enter the ROM addresses you posted into the conversion program. You can get a conversion program from here:

Unfortunately, I can't run that program because I'm on a PPC Mac and, though I have DOSBox, it appears to require Windows. However, I did find a Java applet online (http://games.technoplaza.net/ggencoder/java/applet/) that purports to do the same thing. When I ran it, I got the following codes:
HXEA-ZEFJ
HDEA-YAFK
E5EA-YA7L
56AT-BDNR
However, I just tried it on real hardware (got my copy of Worms today!) and it didn't work. Did I do something wrong? I was incrementing the address-value pairs like so:
$0AC8A8 - 123C
$0AC8A9 - 0038
$0AC8AA - 6026
$00018E - B1DF
Maybe that was my mistake, but if so, I'm not sure what to do instead.

$0AC8AC - 6026
$00018E - B1DF

Aha, thanks for that! With your help above (plus the applet and board post mentioned previously), I was able to make the following code for Worms (PAL-E), which worked like a charm on a NTSC-U system:
HXEA-ZEFJ
HDEA-YAFL
E5EA-YA7N
56AT-BDNR (this appears to be unnecessary - mine booted without it)
Out of curiosity, why do the ROM addresses increment by two? EDIT: OK, this document of yours (http://www.angelfire.com/games2/codehut/HowtoHackSega.txt) explains that, and thank you for it. But I would've thought each address would hold a 16-bit number, not an 8-bit number?
Tony H
05-14-2010, 12:19 AM
Out of curiosity, why do the ROM addresses increment by two?
Because the value part of the code is 2 bytes. All Genesis/MD (M68k ASM) instructions are always 2 bytes. Have you ever noticed that NES, SNES, and Gameboy Game Genie codes only have 8 characters to choose from when entering codes, but Genesis/MD Game Genie codes have 16 characters. NES, SNES and GB use one byte code values (ie. one byte instructions), but Genesis/MD uses 2 bytes. Example: The instruction for NOP (No Operation) in NES and SNES is EA (1 byte). The instruction for NOP for Genesis/MD is 4E71 (2 bytes).
goldenband
05-14-2010, 12:38 AM
Thanks very much for the info. The only programming I've ever done has been on 8-bit systems like the VCS and Tandy CoCo, so I'm trying to get my head around the way 16-bit systems work. Somehow I thought each address/memory location would hold a 16-bit number.

goldenband
05-14-2010, 12:56 AM
It works perfectly, thanks so much! It's a lot nicer putting in one line than three, especially when it's got a good mnemonic to it (RHEA).
So you're writing a NOP to $0AC8C4, which I guess kills off the whole region check routine in one fell swoop? Hey, I feel incrementally closer to understanding all this! :D

There are "cleaner" ways ways to do it, but I was in a hurry (it's past my bedtime). At $0AC8C4 there is a BNE (Branch if Not Equal). It's not going to be equal, but we do NOT want to follow the branch, so the NOP just lets us go to the next instruction instead of following the branch.

goldenband
05-14-2010, 09:29 PM
OK, here's what I found, using the RHEA-Y60E code:
The screen doesn't roll on my CRT (and I can say from experience that it will roll when receiving a 50Hz signal).
The title screen music plays at normal speed, or at least, it matches the gameplay videos on Youtube. This includes at least one digitized sample which seems to play normally. There's no music during gameplay.
The gameplay is somewhat accelerated (I assume by 20%), though not objectionably so -- it's still completely playable, and might even benefit from it.
However, the digitzed sound effects during gameplay are messed up. Some are missing, some are garbled, and some are slightly distorted.
So, it's 100% playable, but runs a bit fast, and exhibits sound problems during gameplay, at least on my Model 2.
Oh, and one more thing: my girlfriend says I should mention that she kicked my butt in both games. (Sigh.)

The first code bypasses the regional check, and the second code (master code) bypasses the checksum check. Even though the master code is needed on an emulator, I've found that it isn't always needed on real hardware. I include it just in case.
I'll make the regional bypass code for World Championship Soccer II shortly. After that I'll give you a quick rundown on how I make the codes. It's not really that hard. You just need some basic M68k assembly knowledge, and a program that does trace logs. You'll find that when using this method, almost all games can be done with a single code (not counting a master code(s) if needed).
I must say, the regional bypass file you're working on is impressive. Good to see someone finally put it all together.

Hm. I do use a trace log to make my codes along with Hex Workshop so I'll check to see what your codes are doing in Top Gear 2. That game really threw me for a loop. The hex just stopped cold around 30 lines in or so whenever I tried anything. Thanks for the help.
Is my list complete as far as region locked games are concerned? No random unlicensed ones I'm missing? I want this to be complete.
The Japan PAL region is also a little tricky. I've gotten all the games working but usually by using two codes. If there's a way to improve everything I'm all for it.

With Top Gear 2, the trace stops around 30 lines in because you've changed the checksum with your regional bypass code. The master code fixes that problem.
As far as your list being complete... I don't know. I have little knowledge on that kind of stuff.
I don't think anyone has ever asked me to make a regional bypass code for a Japan/PAL console, but here's how I make my codes... I do one assembly trace with the game starting correctly, and then do a second assembly trace with the game failing the region check. I then open both traces and (starting at the beginning) compare them until I find the place where they branch to different addresses. Then it's just a matter of figuring out how to make it so that it will always follow the correct path. There is usually a BEQ or BNE instruction that needs to be either always followed, or never followed. For example, in Top Gear 2, there was a BEQ that I ALWAYS wanted to follow, so I changed the 6710 to 6010. As far as the master code, I just branched over the checksum check.

I see. I guess my problem is that sometimes even when I make a code that works I don't know why it works. Like I can see the 6710 and 6010 values doing different things but I'm not sure what the significance of those values actually are. I appreciate the help.

It does take a little while to understand assembly. I've been at it for a while now and I only know the basics. Luckily, there are really only a hand full of instructions that you have to know to make regional bypass codes.
I looked into World Championship Soccer II (U), and it was going to take more than 5 codes (the Game Genie's limit) to get the game to run on a European/PAL MD. That's assuming that it would even run correctly on a PAL MD without major 50/60hz compatibility issues. The game runs fine (in emulation) on a Japanese MD without any codes, so I'm thinking that maybe it's not really a "region locked" issue with the European/PAL MD, but rather a compatibility issue.
Let me know if there are any other games that you need codes for.
EDIT: Some funny text I found in the World Championship Soccer II ROM:
HELP, I AM TRAPPED IN A SEGA CARTRIDGE FACTORY.

Thanks. I think what gets me is when you get a return (RTS) and it goes to a completely different place from where you want it to go. I have trouble navigating that. It happens in World Championship Soccer at 0C:BEFC.
I used your Top Gear 2 code as a springboard to make a Europe/Japan PAL code. It just requires CART-AR7W to be added to your Japan NTSC code.
If you wouldn't mind I'd like the World Championship Soccer II codes all the same. I'd rather be able to list them and tell people that it requires more than one Game Genie and might not work right than leave it blank.

I probably didn't explain that too well. I had made 5 codes and the game still wouldn't run. The codes are basically useless unless someone wanted to start where I left off. There's no telling how many more codes would be needed to get the game to run. I'll post what I've got, but just remember that the game still does not run with these.
0D841C:4E71...regional part 1
0D8494:6002...regional part 2
0DE3AE:6020...regional part 3
0CBC8A:4E71...regional part 4 (was trying a couple different things here)
0CBC84:6006...regional part 4 (was trying a couple different things here)
There are 2 different "part 4's". That's basically where I was when I gave up.

Thanks. I can't get any further myself. Though you took a different path than I did.
I got stuck after this:
0D841C: 670E
0C9C78: 6002
0CBEE2: 6004 / 0CBEE2: 6018
I was trying different things at 0CBEE2.
Gah! This is the last game! :(

here's a Game Genie code to bypass the region check that works in Fusion:
Smurfs (E) Region Bypass Code
R0ZT-R6XR
Happy to confirm that this works on real hardware. Thanks again!
I plan on importing other games you made codes for as well. Will update as able.

It's been a while, so anyone found a code to get a 50hz game to run in 60hz?
Also, does anyone know if the PAL game Tintin In Tibet needs its own code to run on a North American console?
VGRetro of YouTube says the game is so bad he really wants The Angry Video Game Nerd to take a stab at it.
The Nerd wouldn't be able to take a stab at the game unless he can play it on his North American Genesis systems!

Sonic4life, if I remember correctly, someone said there is a complete regional bypass code list at Gamefaqs.com (probably in the Hardware section).

50/60 Hz is determined by the console hardware, so there is no 'code' to change that, nor will there ever be. You need to mod the hardware or get a native 60 Hz console to force games into 60 Hz.
What you then need to worry about is whether the 50 Hz games will actually be able to run properly in 60 Hz. That's where the Game Genie comes in.

From what I gather, Maximum Carnage is a multi-region game (i.e. the European and American cartridges have exactly the same content), so you should have no trouble playing that Genesis cart on your PAL Mega Drive. No Game Genie codes needed. Just pop in the game and play.

I don't know if this has been mentioned previously in the thread or not but the Dynamite Headdy region bypass code on the first page of this thread fucks up the controls. I'm not exactly sure what the master code is so I'll give this alternate and slightly longer code:
REBT-A6XR
REBT-A6XT
REBT-A60R
Credit for this code goes to Sonic Retro member Gerbilsoft, not me.

I just tried my Dynamite Headdy region bypass code from the first page, and I didn't notice any problems with the controls. Are you sure you entered the code correctly? If you're still having problems with it, here's a new/different code you can try...
B2BT-AA8E
Regional bypass code (lets you play the Japanese cart on a Genesis console)
If you use that code and you get a blank/red screen, then you'll need a master code...
ATBT-AA5N
Master code (only needed if you get a blank/red screen)
If you try the codes, please let me know if they worked, and if you needed the master code or not.

I didn't use the master code. That's why. Mainly because it wasn't posted. but meh.
Edit: It works but only with the master code.

There was no master code listed because it was a regional bypass code and a master code all in one code (no separate master code needed). To make that "2 in 1" code, I had to jump over some programming code, which may have caused your control problems. Anyways, glad to hear the new codes work.

Where is the best guide for this?
There is no real guide for this, I'm afraid, at least not that I'm aware of. What I did in this case was enter the dark and not-entirely-legal domain of ROM sites and took a look at Maximum Carnage. The ROM was marked as (UE), which means that it's a combined USA and European cartridge, so that basically already told me enough. To be entirely sure, I also ran Kega Fusion with auto region detection off, then set the emulator to European and loaded up the ROM. If a game has a region lock, you will see it appear in Fusion. Maximum Carnage ran fine, so I was able to report the good news here with high certainty.

DCMasterCaster, Gley Lancer doesn't appear to be region locked.
FFantasy6, I believe there's a complete list of codes over at Gamefaqs.com (in the Genesis Hardware section).
If either of you still have problems, or need codes made, let me know.

Lets you play the US cartridge on a PAL/European Mega Drive.
NOTE: This code has NOT been tested on real hardware yet.

I'm assuming that "Smurfs Travel the World" is the same as "Smurfs 2". If so, there's a region bypass code on Gamefaqs.com in the Genesis hardware section.
If it's not the same game, or the code from Gamefaqs doesn't work, let me know and I'll make a code.
