View Full Version : Do I need Street Fighter?

I have Samurai Showdown, Eternal Champions, and Virtua Fighter 32X already.
Do I need to buy Super Street Fighter or SCE? Are they really necessary when I have the above?
And if so, which should I buy if I can only have one?

Well think of it this way
SF2 SCE is a 2 in 1 cart....Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting (Best SF2 as many would agree)
Super SF2 has everything you could ask for, plus 4 characters.
Street Fighter 2 is just a bare necessity to any Genesis lover I'd say.
Personally, I love SF2 Special CE because it's one of the more faithful arcade ports to include the arcade intro unlike the Super NES.

They are each their own game. Each fighting game has it's own fighting style, so I dunno. I'm not much of a fighting game fan, and why can you only have one?

They're damn good games but you don't actually need them if there's other things that you're definite about wanting.

What's Hyper Fighting? And while we're at it, is the best SF2-game on SNES or G/MD?

If you want it, then you need it.

SF2 Hyper Fighting? Normally referred as "SF2 TURBO"
This third installement/upgrade to the SF2 engine pretty much introduced new colors for each character. Ryu/Ken can hurricane kick in mid air. Chun-Li has a fireball. Dhalsim gets "Yoga Warp" and so much more.
Why is it the best? Simply because of the speed of the game and the original 12 characters were perfected into how they are noticed in today's SF games and various spin-offs.
Now what's the best SF2 game on SNES? I'd say Super SF2. The sound effects, music, and colors are dead on to the arcade almost.
What's the best SF2 game on G/MD? Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition. Simply because of the 6 button controller, the arcade intro is intact, and just feels better. Yet this is arguable to Street Fighter 2 Turbo

But SSF2 also has several speeds and those 12 characters, with 4 new ones. How come it's worse than SF2SCE?

Super SF2 is not worse, who said that?
Super SF2 is brilliant, but I just like the ability to switch between CE and Hyper Fighting without having to swap a cart :)

You can never have too many fighters. I personally prefer Super Street Fighter but you could get both for a few dollars.

I'd say Champion Edition is probably more worth getting for Genesis, if only because you're more likely to get a better version of Super on another system.
The only major alternative to SCE on Genesis would be to get Capcom Generation 5 (aka SF Collection 2), which contains arcade-perfect ports of the first three SF2's. But they don't have any extra modes, and I don't really see any reason to play The World Warrior... and the Genesis cart is much, much cheaper (and not missing that much in animation). I've been told the best is the PC Engine version, but you need either a Japanese system or a US Duo with hucard converter, and the game is expensive as hell, and the NEC 6-button controllers are rare and expensive.. so only get it if you're rich.

Actually I bought my PC Engine Street Fighter II' Champion Edition BRAND NEW from Japan for about $24 or so recently. I bought a 6-button pad for about the same price and modified it to work with my TurboGrafx-16 (since they changed the control ports for the Duo for some messed up reason which I'll never be able to comprehend). Fortunately I'm finding a lot of games work with the 6-button pad... Fatal Fury 2 (Arcade Card), Ys IV, etc.
Anyway as for the game, everything is near-perfect except for the music. It's only 20 megs.

PCE Street Fighter II CE <3 Oh I wish I had a PCE just for that...such a sweet port..

PC-Engine SFII'CE is a neat one, but when you have the perfectly fine SFII'CE for Genesis with its six-button salivator, ehhh.. why go to the extra work when you could just get an arcade perfect SFII variant in one of many Capcom collections.
...still, I sure would digs me a copy, oh yes.

Aiyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! A SFII discussion and I missed it?!?
Okay...
First and foremost, if you want a near-arcade-perfect port of the either of the games, go for the SF collections released on the PS. (*Edit* if you want a near-arcade-perfect port of the either of the games, get the PS/Saturn versions & an arcade controller. :D)
If you want *ONE* game as a part of your Genesis collection, I'd recommend getting Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition. Otherwise, get 'em both.
SSFII is not SFII SCE/Turbo with more players. The gameplay is different, the game mechanics are different.
SFII SCE plays like a finely tweaked SFII. One of those features on the Genesis version, that really impressed me back in the days was the ability to selectively turn off special moves in the Vs mode. I.E. you could choose which moves to disable for your player. Playing as Ryu with out Hadouken made for some strange competition. Back in the days, no one I knew played SFII Champion Edition. Everyone opted for Turbo. CE was basically Turbo with some features turned off and a slightly different color palette. Capcom just hyped it as two games in one cart.
SSFII is a lot more combo-friendly. The characters are balanced out differently. Some have completely new special attacks. Some have completely new regular attacks. A couple of the characters gained moves that let them pass through fireballs. If memory serves, SSFII is also missing the "disable special moves" option.
The only major alternative to SCE on Genesis would be to get Capcom Generation 5 (aka SF Collection 2), which contains arcade-perfect ports of the first three SF2's. But they don't have any extra modes, and I don't really see any reason to play The World Warrior...
Now-a-days I generally play the PS ports of SF Games for their arcade-perfect-ness. BTW, the PS collection contains unlockable artwork galleries & what have you, so it's not just a no-frills-collection. Anyway, I generally play World Warrior & Hyper Fighting to practice timing combos & "adjusting" to speed.
World Warrior is unforgiving in terms of executing combos. The timing has to be *PERFECT*. Hyper Fighting requires "adjusting" to faster opponents & fight without being able to pull of complicated combos. Funny/Bizarre as it may sound, I use these two games to "warm up" for Capcom Vs. SNK tournaments with my friends. One of these days, I just might win a round. :P (Admittedly, I also play Street Fighter Alpha 3 to practice the art of Taunting, but we're discussing "classic" SF here...)
Occasionally, I'll boot up SFII on the ol' SNES or Genesis out of nostalgia. It doesn't mean much now a days, but back in '92, an arcade game that actually looked & played like it's arcade counterpart was a big deal. Maybe I'll review one of the SFII games for Reader Roundtable 4. Speaking of which, Melf, has anyone ever done a side by side comparison for four games?? I think it'd be interesting to compare SFII CE on the Genesis, Master System, PC Engine & SNES.
I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think the faster CPU on the Genesis allowed the Genesis ports to play better.
One more thing...
Anyone played/own SFII for the Master System?

Hell, get the Saturn versions as the Saturn controller DESTROYS the PlayStation controller six ways from Sunday. This is not an opinion. It is fact. It's in the Bible.
Anyone played/own SFII for the Master System?
I've played it on an emulator. I was kind of impressed being that it was a MS game and had some voices. I'd pay $10 for a complete version of the real thing just for fun, though.

Have you ever tried the bootleg SFII for the NES?

I have Street Fighter Collection for Saturn. Perfect ports of Super, Super Turbo, and Alpha 2 "Gold" (Zero 2 Alpha). But they're really arcade ports -- ie, they don't have the console-exclusive modes like 16-player tournaments and stuff. Which are neat sometimes.
The ultimate release of Street Fighter II is Super Street Fighter II X for Matching Service on DC, supposedly.
If you were to get:
Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition (genesis)
Street Fighter Alpha (saturn)
Street Fighter Collection (saturn)
Street Fighter Zero 3 (saturn)
Street Fighter III: Double Impact (dc)
Street Fighter III: Third Strike (dc)
Then that'd be the easiest and best way to have a "finished" collection of Street Fighter games, IMO. You'd have everything except The World Warrior, SF1, and stupid things like Rainbow Edition, and they'd all be the superior versions*. Not counting the versus games here, mind you.
* - some people prefer the stand-alone Alpha 2 to Alpha 2 Gold from SF Collection, because it has a training mode and stuff (though it lacks the "Gold" improvements). But then you'd need the other two games separately; the Collection is just easier.
Anyone played/own SFII for the Master System?
I played it once. It was... okay. But, I only played it with two buttons. In Brazil they made a six-button SMS controller...
Come to think of it, would a six-button Genesis controller work? I mean, my six-button Genesis controller works perfectly on SMS games either through a PBC or on my actual Master System, so I know it works. But would the extra buttons be functional for those few six-button Brazilian SMS games?

That brings up a good good question....COULD KOF94 or 95 be ported to Genesis or SNES during the final years of the two 16-bit systems??
Joe Redifer

Sure it could. It'd be just the same as the Neo on the Genesis with some loss of color and fewer simulataneous voices if the meg-count was the same as the Neo Geo version.

Exactly right...just wonder why it wasn't done...
Yes you need Street Fighter II...
I recommend the Super Edition. Even though it seems the graphics were slightly toned down compered to CE on the genesis, but extra characters are a Plus...

A 194 meg Genesis cart would very nearly sicken me.

I bet they could do it with 112 megs since the Genny has fewer colors and less sound samples to worry about.

I went ahead and got Super Street Fighter. I've had both in the past and sold both off, so I sort of knew when push came to shove which one I preferred.
Now, I got it loose, so no manual. I printed of a move list, of course, but is there anything else I should know about? Or could someone direct me to a killer FAQ for it?

To quote the words of Mark Evanier, History may be made by winners but it is those with the loudest voice that are heard. Capcom is pretty loud. Especially compared to SNK. :D

And besides, it wasn't until KOF 98 that SNK pefrected the game.
