I have been playing that game a lot recently, to the point that I can complete it without losing too many lives at all, barring making stupid mistakes that I could easily avoid. So far, I've manged to get very close to completing it on very hard difficulty (1 life, one continue) however, I have been looking on the internet about it and I have found out that there's another difficulty level after that.

From what I've heard, it goes like this. One life, no continues and you only have one heart. Basically, one touch and that's it, game over.

Has anyone here actually played on this difficulty? And if they have, have they actually completed the game on it?

Nope. I love this game, but all in all I'm pretty bad at it. I can barely do some of the easier settings.

Somebody on GameFAQs got to Axel in this mode. O_O

Or at least claimed to.

Exactly. I probably couldn't get past the water snake on level 2, I always get hit by him at least once, even though I now complete the game each time on hard without losing too many lives.

I've done it. 1/2 a heart left, no continues, 2AM. Yes, I've completed the game twice in a row (Ultra Hard mode is unlocked once you complete the game) with no Game Genie/PAR magic. The ending screen is Sparkster flying 'out of' the screen, with the text 'Congratulation ... you are very very strong!!' behind him.

super fast edit: yeah, I'm that obsessed with this game - I did the above using the Japanese game cart XD

It shows its creator's Contra roots in those difficulty modes.
