View Full Version : Favorite genesis shooter

I'm not going to make this a poll due to the fact that I'd probably leave some out. So what's your favorite shooter on the genny? I think I'd go with truxton. I know a lot of people like the thunder force series and I think those games are great. However, I generally prefer top-down shooters and despite it not having exceptional graphics or anything, I'd say truxton is a really fun game. It's pretty simplistic but it has a great arcade feel to it.
I haven't played a shooter on genesis yet, but they do sell thunder force 3 at the gamecrazy I guess i'll have to buy it.

Galaxy Force II is a decent into-the-screen shmup. Zero Wing is also a great game (the 'tractor beam' is very useful, if only to fling ships at other ships).

M.U.S.H.A....I prefer vertical shmups, and this one is just put together so perfectly.

Lightening Force.. what a shooter. Sagaia I also very much enjoy, but it's not the horizontal mayhem festival that Lightening Force is. As vertical shooters go, M.U.S.H.A. is grand, but my heart lies with the horizontal scroll. Good ol' Lightening Force.
..And for a little something different, Panorama Cotton's pretty neat, too.
Vertical= MUSHA
Horizontal= Thunder Force III

GleyLancer all the way
with Lightening Force and M.U.S.H.A. fighting it out for 2nd.
Am I the only one who thought MUSHA was way too hard and confusing?
It can be confusing at times. There's so much going on sometimes that the bullets get lost in the scrolling background. The shot power ups are especially notorious for doing that.
ThunderForce III. I don't think I have ever truly enjoyed a vertical shooter. It's not the view. It's the tendency for to require more memorization, rather than being possible the first time through. The Thunderforce, Gradius, Salamander, R-Type, and Darius series are all favorites of mine.

SegaXtreme (http://www.segaxtreme.net/) has the whole soundtrack for downloading. I believe the track for that stage (stage 3, right?) is track 11 on the soundtrack.

Fav schmups: (by that I mean H and/or V-scroll, not run n gun or commando shooters)
Thunderforce IV (Lightening Force) (Simply the finest shooter on the Genny)
MUSHA Aleste (A very close second. Powerful, loud, metal soundtrack)
Thunderforce III (colors and beautiful audio galore)
Lords of Thunder (soundtrack, gfx, and a good reason to validate having a SCD)
Lightening Force.
Am I the only one who thought MUSHA was way too hard and confusing?
Practice there bro. Play defensively for times when you are surrounded. Keep shooting but emphasize priority on where the bullets are. I've finished MUSHA countless times, many of them on Hard mode. And don't forget, the endings get better the higher the skill level.
GleyLancer all the way
with Lightening Force and M.U.S.H.A. fighting it out for 2nd.
Would you mind explaining more about GleyLancer and why you favor it? If you displace the other 2 finest shooters with GleyLancer I REALLY want to know why ;) I want to get into MD imports, and I've thought of this title alot.

I couldn't tell you... it has been SO long since I played shmups on the Genny.
The only ones I play anymore are my two top favs on DC... Ikaruga and Bangai-O
You name the shmup on the Genny, I've played, loved it, and they all mesh together into one in my head it has been so long. (almost a decade, damn I should pop one in and get jammin'!)
I started playing ThunderForce 3 it really gets me frustrated. So far I ain't to fond of these shooter games.

Yeah, shooters do indeed have a tendency to be unrelentingly punishing. Ah well.. eventually you should get the hang of it. It's all a delicate ballet of projectile avoidance and weapon hoarding.

I have to say Thunderforce II is my fave.
It has the perfect difficulty of the series and I really enjoy the contrast of the overhead and side scrolling levels. I just love the feel of the game. It feels so arcade. And to think it was a launch title.
I like Gaires and Arrow Flash alot too. And of course the rest of the TF series.
I have never been into verticle shooters very much. But Truxton is great fun.

FIRE SHARK!!!
fire shark!!
fire sha...
fire shark is an awesome vertical shooter on the MD, if possibly a tad on the easy side at times. just read the back of the box :
"communication lines are cut. military bases lay in ruin. then out of the smoky haze emerges a phantom biplane. you are fire shark, earths last defense against this colossal onslaught!"
what makes fireshark such a great game is the amount of bad guys and the amount of weaponary you can mount on this tiny little red "phantom biplane", the starting weapong is a 3 way shot which goes up in power until you have a wave of blue going across the screen, you have your standard laser type weapon which is a little weak and then the flamethrower.
yes, an airbourne flamethrower.
now that might sound a little stupid and yes it is a bit rubbish for the first two levels of power up, but get it to 3 or 4 and you're laughing. jets of flame wiping the screen, killing everything in sight! forwards, the sides and almost all the back, suddenly the huge numbers dont matter and.... then a plane comes in the blind spot and you die.
doh.
but i digress, fireshark is an epic game, like it says in the review on this site the balance in fireshark is great. and the music is pretty awesome as well.
second favourite, thunder force 3.

My favorite vertical shooters:
- Truxton
- Musha Aleste
- V.V / Grind Stromer
- Vapor Trail
My favorite horizontal shooters:
- Sol Deace
- Battle Mania ( Trouble Shotter in USA )
- Arrow Flash
- Aero Blasters
Obviously
03-20-2006, 08:29 AM
I'll take M.U.S.H.A. as my overall favorite, mainly because I prefer vertical scrollers over side-scrolling shooters.
I really love Fire Shark as well but yeah, it was a bit too easy. Once you get the flamethrower completely maxed out you're practically invincible. It also drags on a bit longer than it has to.

I'd say Gaiares followed by Lightening Force. You just can't beat the weapon stealing in Gaiares which gives you so much weapon variety and replayability. And for Lightening Force, well, I LOVE insane amounts of parallax scrolling and this game will blow your mind!

8-MEG POWAR! This game's just so great on every level, and with a lady boss name like ZZ Badnusty, you honestly can't go wrong...
Anyone else here prefer the horizontal levels of Thunder Force II to the levels in III? If it weren't for the top-down sections, it'd definitely best III in my book.
Joe Redifer
03-22-2006, 07:01 PM
Gaiares kicks ass! It's one of those games where it just keeps on giving and giving. When I finally made it up to the Grim Reaper I was like OMG LOL OMFG!!!1! and I was barely half way through the game at that point. Granted the first half is better than the second, but it's still all good.
The horizontal levels in Thunder Force 2 were fun for me. I can beat stage 3 in under 30 seconds. I always have to die at least once on stage 5 (no choice) and I still haven't quite memorized stage 7. But I enjoy them lots. Thunder Force 1 was ALL OVERHEAD. I want the ROM to that game NOW.

I have a soft spot for Bio-Hazard Battle......but still have a good number of Genesis shmups to go through.....
So, I guess that game's my current #1, but I still have the majority of the shmups considered all-time greats in the genre to play, meaning its spot likely will be usurped at some time......

Hmmm ,i finished Tf 4 yesterday with the 99 ship mode on maniac, but i doesnt ctach my intrest anymore, the music is good until its final point, all the omakes you get when finishing it are almost all ugly and spacy, omake 5 is cool but further nahh, even the songs are way to short.i think musha could do good.BTW TF 3 really does suck in my oppinion one hit kil,and crappy music and graphics are decent and one move and youre in tha face of youre enemy, really fucking boring and ugly.

It sounds like Thunder Force 3 was too hard for you. Interesting, as I think it is one of the easiest games in existence (but still great) and with fantastic music and graphics. An absolute must-own. My preference has always been horizontal shooters, so Thunder Force IV is my absolute favorite on the Genesis/MD. For vertical, I would have to say MUSHA Aleste. For pseudo-3D, it would have to be After Burner II.

Best psuedo 3D shooter is Super Thunder Blade! That game is the best thing that has ever happened on planet earth. The scaling is almost too good. In fact after playing hours and hours of Super Thunder Blade the real world seems choppy and jumpy by comparison! The real world also looks much more fake. Those buildings in Super Thunder Blade look BETTER than real!

Rail: Panorama Cotton (Space Harrier 2)
V: MUSHA/Aleste (Slap Fight (love the title!), Elemental Master, Truxton)

Other: Twinkle Tale, (Granada, Predator 2, Sub-Terrania)

Actually, I like Genesis/MD After Burner II because it was the first console version to duplicate the gameplay of the arcade version. Sure the background graphics were lacking, but at least the game runs fast and smooth, and the sprite scaling is pretty good.

Bit treu,The music is just the topping, aint that right. You already het a neat game, plus yes without worying about bleeps, like the extra adrenaline packed with the game instead of separate.Normally i just tune on music, like some Heavy metal stuff. But with the likes of TF 4 you dont have to bother doing that, the game it self rocks hard, like fire shark, which sound a bitsy too sharp somethimes,Probably cant be blamed since when it was released.Musha pushes you trough the game with or without music, the music is just a extra adrenaline push(it supposed to be).thats it music isnt neccesairly a must in a game but it just spices the game a bit more for the wannahaves.

Hey that game rocks!! Well that's true for the graphics part, but I don't think it makes it unplayable at all. I quite enjoy playing that game actually. It looks like Thunder Force II Top down view levels but with the ability to stop your vehicle and strafe. The gameplay is ok and the levels are quite varied.
If you wanted an example of a game that would've sucked without the music, it's probably true with this one. The ugly graphics are saved by it's kick-ass music. Synthetized speed metal a la TF IV and MUSHA. Pay attention to the soundtrack it is really one of my favorites on the Genesis.

Not every game is for everyone. :) It's okay, though I will say that if you aren't strafing, then playing it must seem like a mess. It really feels like a standard shooter to be, just with an adjustable background, once you lock in your position and start dodging shots. I really like that boss (I think the 4th or 5th) where you're trapped in a room and need to bounce bullets against the wall to hit the weak point in the rear. That's pretty innovative for a shooter, especially for the time.

I actually don't like Thunder Force 4. I think it looks like Technosoft tried to do too much and broke the Genesis. The colors look too grainy and washed out, the ship somehow got fat, and I hate how much vertical movement there is for what's a horizontal shooter. That last boss is just weird, too. It's hardly a bad game or anything, it just doesn't look or play as well as Thunder Force III.

its better then TF3 cuase youre enemies arent directly in youre face while mving, maybe the shipt has gooten fat i dont care it looks good, the graphics are a bit grainy yes and somethimes but strange things that arent drwan corectly but i praise it ways above TF3 graphic wise and mo obviously sound aldo i can nderstand that 30 sec of guitar rifs is getting aboying after repeating they could have made that goodness longer thats a minor, like all the bosses together are like one complete sound track not more, still its some impressive stuff,i think these discussions come around more times TF4 ist perfect but hell worth a 9 for its extras and guitar stuff plus actually good graphics.TF3 is a hated title here in the dutch and i understand why dull music and very limited the bosses and enemys are in youre face the most uninspected things come in youre face while not nitcing and ice bergs that hit you while you had to prefentually think about that, hell you never did know if there where any bergs on the place if youre playing it for the first time, yess TF3 is actually overrated crap, the graphics are dated and the sound is bit boring, decent game.TF shoots it no matter what.TF4 is a one play run,you finish it quick and you aint play it aggain for the bosses cause their decent like the moll damn some bosses are too damn boring like the one from stage 8 crap, and the one in stage 7 hmm badd and the music is worse to with this boss, some bosses are really boring but still i cant complain and say that TF3 is better graphic wise or else cause it just isnt.Maybe another TF would button the perfection on the MD yess TF 4 was way to early to be soo advanced but it worked out kindo good,if Tsoft taked the time which they obviously had enough of,and released it letter then we had a beast of a shooter music wise and graphic wise cause its a beast already.

@benjamin about the Thunderforce III game is better than IV. I will get a slogan of Sega with it against Nintendo Game Boy "If you were colorblind you could see the difference"! IV is the best, life with it, better graphs and sounds hell yeah!

Another vote here for Truxton.
I'm not a huge shooter fan but this one fit me just right.

The last post was in 2006. Probably the biggest necrobump I've ever seen.
I'm indecisive between Musha Aleste and Zero Wing.

Thunder Force IV, no doubt about that. Lots of other great shmups available for MD/G but this one takes the cake.
Either Elemental Master or Undeadline has to be my favourite.

I really wish verytex and grind stormer would get more love. Verytex is king of music and some great atmosphere. Grind stormer has some just awesome bullet pattern dodging.

I have a very used copy of Grind Stormer on my shelf downstairs that simply refuses to work about 95% of the time. Once in a blue moon, the cart cooperates. When this occurs, I don't take the cart out of my Genesis for a good week or so.

This's why I love flash carts. Among other reasons.

Well, I haven't played all of the shooters for the Genesis and I don't know if it's the best but the one I have had the most fun with so far is Fire Shark.
Edit: Sorry about the run-on sentence...

#2 on my list gotta be Super Fantasy Zone. Personal nostalgia aside I'd say it's on par with Thunder Force IV.

- Zero Wing
- Hellfire
- Lightening Force
The force is strong with the Genesis though when it comes to SHMUPs, but those 3 are consistently go to games in my collection.

I'm amazed I haven't replied to this. I'm a sucker for lists and shmups! My top three:

2. MUSHA
3. Truxton

Gleylancer is my favorite, hands down. The graphics have great use of parallax, the music is very upbeat and catchy, the weapon system is pretty unique and not too derivative of anything else, the voices are better than TFIV, and most of all it's pretty accessible for people who aren't that good at shooters. As much as I like and enjoy shooters, I'm just not very good at them and great games that do I like, such as TFIV and Truxton and Gradius are hard for me to get into because they kick my ass. I just have an easier time with Gleylancer and that makes all the difference.

It's not you shmups tend to be overly difficult.

A lot of them will still kick your ass (no matter how many times you play), and I think that's part of what makes them so rewarding.

Yeah, I have to confess that I have never actually beaten a shmup. The folks who can 1CC these games are astounding to me.
I really like some of them (Fire Shark, Truxton, Thunderforce series, etc.) but I can't beat them. I did get to Stage 9 in Fire Shark the other night... there are 10 stages in that one right? It's all I can do to get to the 3rd stage of Truxton.
But I still enjoy trying!

I must confess that I wonder why this game is loved so much. I find it boring.
And Musha... I can't cope with the graphics style, too weird.

Unfortunately very few are actually worth the effort learning well enough to clear without credit feeding. Ketsui is the only shmup I bothered learning that well.

The speed at which it plays is slower than most shmups, to be sure. And the graphics style is a bit date, and not top notch aesthetically. However, the gameplay is great. I like the power up system (you don't lose all your powerups when you get hit; you just get knocked down a level), the weapons, and the difficulty. Things come at you from every which way, always keeping you on your toes and maintaining tension. It can be maddeningly difficult, but still never feels cheap.
Truxton is an acquired taste, but worth putting some time into IMHO.
