Microsoft to start $10 hits program
Popular Xbox titles to sell for $9.99; Microsoft confirms 16 participating games in program's "first wave."
Greatest Hits, Player's Choice, Platinum Hits… Whatever the program is called, each current-generation system has a discount program where older, popular games see their shelf lives extended, usually with the help of $20 price tags. While the discounting usually stops there, Microsoft today announced a new "Best of Platinum Hits" program that will push the price of admission for 16 of its 100+ Platinum Hits titles down to $9.99. The new prices are set to take effect this month.

The "first wave" of games in the program follows:

Counterstrike - Microsoft Game Studios
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Bethesda Softworks
Enter the Matrix - Atari
Fuzion Frenzy - Microsoft Game Studios
MechAssault - Microsoft Game Studios
Project Gotham Racing 2 - Microsoft Game Studios
Shrek 2 - Activision
Soul Calibur II - Namco
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon - Ubisoft
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Island Thunder - Ubisoft
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3 - Ubisoft
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow - Ubisoft
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell - Ubisoft
Tony Hawk's Underground - Activision
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 - Activision
True Crime: Streets of LA - Activision

Cool idea, not a good selection of games though. And I hope they don't have some hideous new packaging.

They always change the packaging on discounted titles to PUNISH YOU for not buying them at their original high price. Imagine having a bunch of the $20 PS2, Xbox and GC games. Some friends come over and peruse your game library. "Man, you sure are a cheap bastard!" they all say as they leave your place, never to speak to you again. Same rule applies to those "Sega Classic" boxes. I hate it when companies do that.

I cry and cry and cry every time I'm forced to look at the searing green garbage splashed onto my Final Fantasy Tactics "Greatest Hits" packaging. My only consolation is knowing the absurd ammount of money people payed for the game before they started pressing it again.

Sometimes re-release titles also have bug fixes though like Metroid Prime but in the case of Metroid Prime it was a bad idea because it ticked off all the speed run jockeys.

Anyway I'll admit to being a cheap gamer and I eagerly await stripping bargain bins once the rest of the new systems are out. I picked at the Playstation 1 and Dreamcast's corpses like a vulture. I very rarely/almost never buy a game new because I know it's going to be cheaper later down the line and possibly even cheaper preowned. I'm a goon like that.

That's why I usually buy the rereleases: Sometimes they have bug fixes. Silly reason, but whatever.

However... whne the Greatest Hits ver. of FFT was released, the original packaging droped way down in price and there where a handful at the local EB.

And nine times out of ten, the non GH/PH/CH versions are still easy to find at the stores.

I like how, in Revenge of Shinobi, they fixed that awful bug of having Godzilla and Batman in the game!

Metroid Prime had bug fixes before it was a Player's Choice release. The second run of Metroid Prime that came with the Prime 2 demo has bug fixes.

Wasn't that one released after the Player's Choice version? I'm pretty sure they're the same version anyway. The original PAL release had the bug fixes before the Player's Choice version though. I'm not sure about the Japanese release.

I don't know... It doesn't say Player's Choice on it, so I assumed it was pre-PC.
