Hey All,
Tengen blessed the Genesis scene with 3 amazing arcade ports....
Roadblasters
Ms. Pac-Man
&
Gauntlet 4
Yes, they were just a publishing company but they really pushed out some amazing games and I would just like to take this time to say thank them......

Even thought I'm not the biggest sport games fan out there, I usually find myself playing alot of Tengen's RBI Baseball 4

Oh crap. That reminds me of an article I want to do. Klax vs Klax (Namco vs Tengen versions). It would be a rather short and boring article, though.

I'm still waiting for Thunder Spirits vs. Thunder Force III. Picked up the former yet, Joe?

Hard Drivin' :p
In all seriousness I kind of like it, probably more fun on an overclocked genesis. (if anything the lack of in-game music is the biggest annoyance to me)
I know it's horribly dated and choppy, but I still find a bit of charm in it.

Zebbe, no I haven't. :( It is super r@re.
I like Hard Drivin' as well. Or at least I used to. I can still have fun with it for 5 or 10 minutes these days.

Found one for ya: http://global.ebay.com/THUNDER_SPIRITS_-_SUPER_NINTENDO_SNES_SHOOTER_GAME/250520546040/item
Hope it's not too expensive... Or maybe you hate Paypal/eBay with good reason to not get one there?

Yes that is far too expensive. We'll see. :)

"Thunder Spirits"? Rare and expensive? What the hell? I got a loose copy for less than $10 back around 2001. Not really worth it, especially if you already own TF3. Just emu that SOB. The slowdown is pervasive all throughout the game, and the music really didn't translate well to the SNES.
Back on-topic, Tengen.........has a spotty record. Let's not forget "Awesome Possum" and the horrendous port of the mediocre "Pit Fighter". I'm grateful that they brought over Technosoft's take on Devil's Crash over to the U.S ("Dragon's Fury"), but their U.S-only sequel ("Dragon's Revenge") is trash.......yet I still find myself playing it often.

I think they're being a little sarcastic, that copy: http://global.ebay.com/THUNDER_SPIRITS_-_SUPER_NINTENDO_SNES_SHOOTER_GAME/250520546040/item is $5 shipped. ;)
And way cheaper than TFIII.

I agree w/ Aarzak, lets also not forget how horrible :yuck:Steel Talons:yuck: was w/ its Non Existent controls and incredible flickering:yuck:

Let's not forget that Tengen gave us (an edited) Dragon's Fury.
As for Thunder Spirits vs Thunder Force III, TFIII wins. It's as simple as that IMHO. Music and controls are much better on TFIII, the duller asteroid level and rehashed TF2 level aren't better than what was originally in TFIII, and even the ending is better in TFIII. Not to mention, TS has much more noticeable slowdown issues, and it has a smaller play area thanks to the lower resolution.
The only area TS might get a leg up is graphically, but even that's debatable when you factor in things like the dull recoloring of the Gargoyle boss.

Judging by the youtube videos of the 1st levels in TFIII vs TS, they're pretty similar, sounds are differen't, some sprites and BG are as well, but I think the music was converted pretty well and there seems to be less flicker in TS. (really noticeable at the boss)
TFIII seems to sell for a lot more, though TFII is even cheaper than TS.

Wasn't TS a gross port of an arcade game, which in itself was essentially an altered port of TFIII?

Yeah. Thunder Spirits was a port of Thunder Force AC, which in turn was an arcade port of Thunder Force III.
TFAC changed a couple stages (took out two from TFIII, and added the asteroid level and the TFII level), and then TS went a step further, and changed the last couple of levels, and altered the "Battleship" level on top of that. It basically made TS more like Thunder Force AC Gaiden or something.

FYI Tengen was the label Atari Games used for publishing to home consoles. (not to be confused with Atari Corp, the two being split from Atari Inc in 1984, with Atari Games staying as part of Warner and Atari Corp being formed by Jack Tramiel and encompassed the consumer division of Atari Inc -the computers and home game systems)
Thus, it was Tengen who published many home ports of Atari Games arcade games. (like Road Blasters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Pit Fighter and Hard Drivin') Along with games Atari had licenced. (like Rolling Thunder, and hance some versions of Pac Man -stemming from the licence procured originally for the 2600 port)

They did us the favor of porting Robo Aleste.

And though it's not Genesis-based, they did give us a much better version of Tetris on the NES.

I'm still trying to figure out how Atari Games (Tengen) was just a publishing compny.

No, Tengen didn't develop or publish the Japanese MD version of Tetris, it was "adapted by Sega (http://www.sega-16.com/review_images/886/1.gif)".

No, I believe they developed games on the MD/G as well such as Awesome Possum and the RBI Baseball series. For the most part, they had other companies develop/port games for them, though.

I was just playing Pit-Fighter on my emulator during the weekend and Tengen & Sterling Silver software does it again! What a great arcade port. Yes, the sprites are smaller then the arcade but the gameplay is still there. :ok:

Huh, it definitely looks to be adapted from Atari's arcade version of Tetris though. (and thus the NES port)

Sega made several arcade releases of Tetris (http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=701&page=1#3186) as well. By the way, the Mega Drive port was done by Sanritsu (http://www.vgrebirth.org/games/game.asp?id=20163&redirect=%2Fgames%2Fsearch.asp%3Fkeywords%3Dtetris %26x%3D0%26y%3D0).
