This is just a concept/W.I.P, what do you think so far, any ideas?

It looks nice, but I think instead of the other 16 we should stick with the regular Sega-16 font that we have now.

Other than that it looks good.

Sega Pat is cool but all of sega-16's logos have box art and it doesn't look too original.

But then again I have no original ideas myself so I suppose we just let the standard logo stay for now.

i also wanted to put blood under Sega Pat's left foot and Mario's hat on the puddle. To make it look like he was crushed by Pat.

"16" should be in gold.

I don't know... maybe I need to see it on a different background - The blue of the Sega-Logo and the background don't go well together. I also agree with Zebbe that the red "16" doesn't quite work. Also, maybe a different Sonic might go better as well; granted, the sprite-look is akin to the 16-bit-era, but doesn't go well with the rest of the image.

Well i did say that this is a W.I.P, a lot of things will change

It needs animations if you're using small sprites IMO, and Megaman needs to fuck off too, regardless of The Wily Wars.
He's iconic with NES gaming.

I would sooner include:
Alex Kidd
Epsilon Eagle
Corona
Headdy
Gilius Thunderhead
Rolf
Tails
Joe Musashi
even Polterguy, or Wor

I'd rather leave a few characters out; the banner is way too crammed already as it is!

Well, its 'all' or nothing IMO.

That banner I posted is actually a really old one I found in VinnyTs signature on DigitalPress while looking in an old thread.

It's a good thing Paul Rand is already dead because this would have killed him.

Suggestions on this specific piece of art: 6 button controller, Sonic running fast sprite from Sonic CD, and -16 with the Sega font.

I think the logo is fine as it is, perhaps a small re-touch on the forum-logo, but that's it.

I'm probably going to get flames for this, but I don't like it. Here's why...

- The aesthetics are rather jumbled visually, leaving the most important part ("Sega-16") minimized. The site is "Sega-16", not "Silhouetted Character with Sonic... oh, and Sega-16". The focus is on the wrong part, and it needs addressing.

- I know the black character was part of Sega's campaign at one point, but it's a dull, boring visual. Of all the Genesis titles that had notable characters, surely several of them could be used with the "Sega-16" logo rather than a less-than-notable black shape that was supposed to be "cool" or whatever Sega marketers were going for. And really, now that I think about it, one character would be enough.

- As others have said, the red "16" in a different font doesn't go well. When using fonts, you don't want to jump around, as it creates visual inconsistency when the fonts are so drastically different, and similar in size, as they are in your WIP. One font for a logo is enough, unless you're going to have one font very large and dominating (generally more stylized), and then the other font considerably smaller (generally more simplified).

- Logos are supposed to be simple... something that can work as both a large and small image. That WIP is already jumbled and more complicated than it needs to be. Shrink it way down, and it gets worse (especially with whatever's on the TV screen). Simple is good with logos.

Hopefully that doesn't come off as confrontational. I tend to be a bit blunt with critiques, and keep in mind, these are just my opinions on it. But right now, that WIP is going in all the wrong directions for what a logo should essentially be. I think you need to start from scratch.

I have to agree with The Coop, all his points got mentioned in the art class I had in school, where I had to design a logo myself too

No problem. I know how hard it can be to come up with logo, having designed a number of them for people myself. You get big ideas, and you try to shoehorn them all into a limited space, only to realize that you're trying to do too much. Some of my logos early on went way too wild. It's just a matter of reeling in your imagination and keeping a handle on it.

Just as an example, here's a couple little pissy things I did last night...

http://two.xthost.info/thecoop/Sega16Logo.png

http://two.xthost.info/thecoop/Sega16LogoAni.gif

The Sonic sprite is built from a few different pre-existing sprites, and the bottom one has a simple blinking animation with varying frame delays. The lettering is too simple visually compared to the current logo and its shading, but I was just going for layout with these.

With something like that, the main focus is there front and center, while giving it a little extra touch. With this, you could have the character animate behind the logo, interact with it, or even make multiple versions featuring Sega-specific characters and have all the banners on a rotation like what OverClocked Remix does with its mascots in the upper-right corner (each time the site loads, a different mascot comes up). But in the end, "Sega-16" dominates at all times, so the focus never really leaves what the logo's main purpose is... pimping the artist/site/band/whatever.

Anyway, that's just a quickie example. Try not to do too much in the space you have to work, and always remember what the main focus should be. Keep those things in mind, and you'll get better at it :)
