j_factor, have you had a chance to play Meteos, or did you buy it out of outright curiosity/sale price attractiveness? I really enjoy the game, myself. Not a mundane puzzle game by any means.

I'm planning to pick up a DS when Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (looks bloody amazing) gets its release. Round about then there will probably have been a pleasant little price drop.

I really only bought it because it was on sale and because I'm a silly man. However, I have been playing it, thanks to a friend who's letting me borrow his DS (with a couple games) for a while. I also really enjoy it; I think it's one of the best puzzle games around.

How is it, exactly? I was in a discussion on another board about it, and the person was saying that it was no more than a glorified LCD game-type thingy. I said he was wrong.

It was a legitimate platform, no?

It was a legitimate platform, it just sucked. Most of the games were just horrible. Quiz Whiz, for example, is a trivia game.. that has exactly the same questions in exactly the same order every time you play. Wtf is that?

Genesis model 2 w/ Sega CD (my first system, and my friend's old SCD)

32X (I kinda liked it)

Genesis model 1 with another 32X (I am afraid to take of the metal clips)

Nomad (The system I play the most sadly)

GameGear (Mine sucks, but a great handheld nontheless)

Modded Saturn (I wish it would have beaten the PSX)

Dreamcast (THE BEST SYSTEM THIS GEN)

Nintendo DS (I just love the games on this, like METEOS, witch is 10/10 easy)

GameCube (I love this system, but with no Zelda, I only play RE4, and Viewtiful Joe, so I am selling it)

Gutted Genny model 2

Systems I have owned:

Nintendo

Super Nintendo

Nintendo 64 (all of these I sold, cause of the Revolution)

Playstation (Loved it, but given to my godsons)

Playstation 2 (never really like it at all, and it was stolen)

Xbox (Amazing console, but not very many games came out later, and I sold it)

Most of the Gameboys

Neo Geo Pocket Color (liked it, but wasn't supported in the USA well, then it was stolen)

I don't like to buy stuff from most webstores because they usually overprice stuff out the wazoo. I either ebay, trade/buy from fellow gamers, or hunt stuff down in yard/garage/flea/junk/consignment store sales.

My list:
-Started off with Mega Drive \m/
-Got Gameboy (only ever had 2 games before it broke)
-Gameboy Pocket to replace the Gameboy
-PlayStation (which I either lost the cord for or it broke)
-Gameboy Colour to play the newest Pokemon game with :P
-PlayStation2, which got replaced with a slim PS2 after it broke
-Mega Drive again off eBay after I found out our old one got chucked out, along with all the games

I'm thinking of getting a Gameboy Advance.

Let's see...
Segregated by company:

NES (original model)
SNES (original model)

The Speccy is not a gaming console. Some people would even doubt it is a computer.
I only ever used it to play games as its use as a computer was virutally none existant. I guess that's where my error comes from.

I'm pretty light in consoles compared to most of you.

I have:

SNES
Genesis
N64 (Seriously undervalued by you guys, IMO the best system of the generation)
PS2 (Awful awful purchase, I really should have got nothing last generation ---> the top 3 systems all sucked, too bad Dreamcast didn't get more support from the Sony fanboys, that was loaded with some great games)
Wii (Awesome awesome purchase)
GBA (probably gonna sell this one)

Used to have/doesn't work anymore:

NES (I actually threw it away with about 25 games, one of the worst moves I've ever made)
Intellivision (My father's first system, baseball kicked major ass)
Gameboy

Would like to own:

Dreamcast (Damn you Sega CD, 32x, and Saturn for killing off consumer trust!)
Saturn??? (Really expensive, but I absolutely adore light gun games and this seems like a haven for them)
NES??? (Virtual Console is doing a great job of replicating this for me, but I would love to use a real NES controller again)

N64 (Seriously undervalued by you guys, IMO the best system of the generation)[quote]
Except for its lack of RPGs. Yeah, it had Paper Mario and Ogre Battle 64...but that's it, pretty much. They system had a total of maybe 5 games that enjoyed, one of which (Mario Kart 64) has become increasingly meh with each new release in the series.

I agree with the Dreamcast bit, but I wouldn't write the PS2 off as a bad system. I really wouldn't say that for any of the last generation. They all had their moments, the last-gen consoles.

GBA (probably gonna sell this one)
Why? I betcha there are a ton of awesome GBA games you haven't played yet.

Current:
Mega Drive - model 2 / EU
Mega Drive + MCD - model 2 / EU / modified: switch (50/60 hz, region)
SNES - model 1 / US / modified: switch (enable/disable lockout)
Saturn - model 2 / EU / modified: switch (50/60 hz), modchip
N64 - JP / modified: RGB output, "lockout" cartridge clips removed
Dreamcast - JP / modified: EU PSU (managed to blow my original JP 110v PSU by accidentally putting 220v on it)
PS2 - EU / modified: modchip, transparent case, network adapter + HD
Xbox - EU / modified: softmod
Wii - EU
Gameboy - EU
Gameboy Color - EU
DS Lite - white / EU

Eventually:
PS3 - most likely JP, 20G

Defunct:
MCD - model 2 / EU / won't read CDs, motor most likely dead
Dreamcast - EU / started exhibiting the reset problem, fixes normally suggested wouldn't work
PSOne - EU / dead laser. The PSOne was really awful in terms of build quality, not to mention it's probably the ugliest looking console since the Atari 5200.

Edit: damn, this looks ugly. I'll make an html table or something later...

Hmm...

SEGA Genesis (Model 1, broken, in closet)
SEGA Dreamcast

Generation NEX (the "new" NES)
Nintendo (NES original toaster-style)
Nintendo SNES
Nintendo 64
Nintendo GameCube + GameBoy Player
Nintendo GameBoy (original one with the crappy dot matrix screen)

NEC TurboGrafx-16 (x2)
NEC TurboGrafx-CD
NEC SuperGrafx + CD
NEC PC-FX
NEC PCE GT (TurboExpress)

I do not own any "current" generation consoles although I plan to buy a Wii at some point. I also do not own any Microsoft products because Bill Gates is clearly a loser. Down with Micro-penis-soft!

This isn't a popular sentiment with most gamers... but I really really do not like RPG's. I keep trying them out, thinking I'm just picking some overrated ones, but I just find them incredibly boring. Mostly these are the PS2 Final Fantasies, but I hated the Pokemon franchise as well. I prefer a Zelda style game (I wanna swing the sword dammit!)

(As a side note, is Beyond Oasis any good? I've heard it plays somewhat similar to a Zelda game. If that's not true ignore please.)

For platformers and FPS, my favorite genres of videogames, the N64 was the king of that generation. My friends and I still play Mario Kart 64, Smash Bros, Mario Party, WWF No Mercy and Goldeneye. For those of you without the ability to gather 4 people together in order to enjoy these games, I can absolutely see why only a few games seem interesting.

The problem IMO with PS2 is it wasn't designed for multiplayer. The addition of the Network Adapter a few years later was nice, but online play cannot compare to sitting around with 3 other buddies while putting down a dollar a race in Mario Kart. X-Box sucked because it had only one worthwhile game (Halo 1), and that was only fun if you had two X-Boxes, two TVs and hooked 'em up for some 4 v 4 with seven of your friends (once again, online just doesn't replicate friends very well).

I am not a hardcore gamer by any means, and my tastes reflect that. The Wii is a refreshing alternative to the 360 and PS3, not so much because of the motion sensing controls (although they are cool), but because it is marketed to people who just want to sit down and have fun for 30 min.

Ms. Pac Man = Awesome
Final Fantasy X = I though FMV games died with the Sega CD

Well, I understand your stance on the last generation in view of multiplayer. The PS2 and XBox really did suck multiplayerwise. But what about the GC? Super Smash Bros. Melee alone was a helluva lot of fun, let alone Kirby's Air Ride, Mario Kart Double Dash, Starfox Armada...

As for the 30 minutes of gaming thing, that's precisely why you should keep a GBA around. Do yourself a favor: before you sell it, try out Wario Ware, Drill Dozer, any of the Sonic Advance games, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Game Boy (includes the origina "Grey Brick", the Game Boy Color, and Advance)

Playstation 2

X Box

Game Cube

Wii

and now Genesis!

As you can probably tell aside from portables I wasn't into the console scene until around 2001 or so. PC gaming only for me until I got a PS2 for Christmas in 2002.

So the platformer of my youth is not Mario or Sonic, but rather Commander Keen!

Tell me im not the only person on this whole site who owns a virtual boy? Don't get me wrong I loath nintendo, but this little honey is just sweet. People are afraid of a little headache, or a little blindness in one or both eyes, but thats pussy shit man. Demon red Yoshi launching glowing red tennis balls right at your face! Shit is intence. The system is cheap but is easily damaged so hopefully they wrap it up well when they ship it. Its like the nintendo version of the 32x, I love it. There aren't too many games for it either, but warioland is awesome, pinball is the shit, nester's funky bowling, the games are actually pretty good plus it looks crazy as fuck to have the system laying out. Go out an get yourself a virtual boy today.

I've got a Virtual Boy, its the worst Nintendo system, well maybe Pokemon Mini is the worst but its a tough contest between the two for the title. Perhaps the Virtual Boy wouldn't be so bad if it actually went on your head, rather than you having to find a surface to stand it on then having to lean into the thing. And quite why it didn't come with a mains power supply I don't know, its not as if its a real portable system, if you tried playing it outside anything could happen to you while your effectively blind to the world!

Its all a lot of hassle for games which aren't any more '3D' than the Master System 3D glasses give, which don't display everything in blood red, and sit comfortably on your face. The Virtual Boy is better as a curious ornament than an actual game machine for playing.

I don't know why it gets hated on so badly, most people have never even played it. If people just sat down with wario land for half an hour they would be impressed. I generally like most of the games, and the music quality with the immersed view creates a pretty unique gaming experience. A bomb could go off outside and I probably wouldn't notice if I was playing VB. Shame they never finished the zelda game that was supposed to come out for it.

I've tried and wanted to like the Virtual Boy, I still own one and several games. But its so awkward to use, infact its causes physical discomfort, not just the strain on the eyes but the fact you have to lean into the thing to play it.
Had I not owned the Master System 3D glasses and its games perhaps I would be more impressed with the VB.

Sega Genesis - Model 1, got it new back in the day
Sega Power Base Converter - got a good used copy in the box a few months ago
Sega 32X - got it new back in the day
Sega CD - got it new back in the day
Sega Saturn - Model 2, got it new back in the day
Sega Dreamcast - bought a new one a couple of years ago
Sega Game Gear - bought it new back in the day, sold it all off, have recently rebuilt my GG collection (4 GG units, lots more games than I had in the past)
Sega Genesis Nomad - bought a new one just a few weeks ago
PS1 - original model, bought it new back in the day
PS2 - original (big) model, bought it new back in the day

I also own a number of the original Mattel Electronics games which I've had since I was a kid. They are: Football, Football II, Baseball, Armor Battle, Battlestar Galactica, Auto Race, Basketball, Soccer and Mind Boggler. I'd like to find Sub Chase, Bowling, Hockey and an original box for my Football game.

Yeah, I'm quite bad for cleaning my consoles tbh, though many of them such as the Atari 2600 I had just pulled down from the attic for the sake of taking the picture (it's an old pic) which is why they're so dusty, the C64 is dirty as hell and gets no love because I actually hate that damn ugly arse machine and long for the original bread-bin version I had when I was a kid :Panda: (which I accidently melted)

Eventually I think i'm going to cave in and give up searching for a C64 at the local flea market and buy one off Ebay.

Okay, discounting the X-in-ones and computers. Favorite game each? Let's see...

Genesis, Zero Tolerance
N64, Shadows of the Empire
NES, no clear favorite
SNES, Secret of Evermore
2600, Olympic Games, specifically the PONG game
7800, Galaga
Gamecube, no clear favorite
Atari 8-bits, Galaga
C=, Radar rat race (only because games are hard to come by)
Nothing else gets enough play to have a favorite, including the Playstations, Saturn and DC.

I hesitate to put up pictures... I'll be organizing and arranging all night!!

When I started making the list here, I didn't know it would go on for that long, even discounting the computers and all-in-ones. Just glad the floor has held up for all this time :)

I'll try to get pics out soon, but with everything else I have going on it may take some time.

The computers are included cause they only get game-played mostly, didn't mean to violate any rules.

Damn. I always wanted that NES Classic SP. Was it released late enough to actually have a backlit screen, or is it still frontlit?

Damn. I always wanted that NES Classic SP. Was it released late enough to actually have a backlit screen, or is it still frontlit?Pretty sure all SP's have backlit screens, that's why they're SP's.

I keep thinking about buying one of those special edition SP's too, I remember there were pretty cool Mario and Zelda themed ones.

I cannot help but be in awe of such a a gamer with such an array of systems. Ace!

What's your favorite system?

Ace
12-26-2008, 12:50 PM
I don't have a particular favorite but I can tell you that if any console has a Thunder Force, R-Type, or Gradius game on it, I'll definitely like it. I like everything I own, but these are my particular favorites:

-Genesis + add-ons(awesome console to modify)
-TurboGrafx 16(Shoot-em-up heaven)
-PlayStation(awesome driving games/Shoot-em-ups)
-PlayStation 2(a haven for race simulations)
-Super NES(a 16-bit powerhouse
-NES(had one since 1985, great games on it)
-Saturn(like with the TurboGrafx 16)
-Dreamcast

But there's one unit in my collection that falls at the complete bottom of my "favorite consoles" list:

The Sega Master System

Sure, it has very nice graphics for a 8-bit console, and a fancy boot-up screen(love it), but I HATE ITS SOUND PROCESSOR! Oh, God, that SN(whatever) PSG sound processor IS ATROCIOUS! Most of the time when I'm playing a Master System game, I have to mute the TV just because the music sounds like @^$@. Another thing I hate is that ONLY JAPAN got the Yamaha YM2413 FM Synthesis chip, which sounds AWESOME compared to the UNBELIEVABLY BAD PSG sound processor.

Heck yeah, Segas are the bomb! All the add-ons for the Genesis just makes it so much fun to mix and match. I'm a big fan of the Power Base Converter:ok: I like my SNES, sure, but there aren't that many things to put on it. Agreed about the SMS sound, it's pretty ear-shattering.

Ace, do you know of a light gun for the Genesis that's good? I don't have a Menacer and don't think I even want one.

Heck yeah, Segas are the bomb!

Damn right!:ok:

All the add-ons for the Genesis just makes it so much fun to mix and match.

Oh, yeah! I'm consistently moving my 32X over from my Model 2 to my Model 1. Hell, I don't even know which console to keep it on(though it's currently sitting in my Model 2)!

I'm a big fan of the Power Base Converter:ok:

Join the club! I didn't even KNOW the Genesis was capable of Master System backwards compatibility until I heard some rumblings of the Power Base Converter. And, if you've seen my post on AtariAge(I'm Ace_1 there), Nathan, due to EXTREME difficulty in finding a cheap Power Base Converter, I made one myself, but with no card slot. I actually like the Power Base Converter so much, I was thinking of taking all the crappy sports games I can find and turn them into Power Base Converters(though only 1 of them will have a Card slot, because I only have 1 dead Master System). And I would LOVE to make one with a Yamaha YM2413 in it. I mean, hey, who wouldn't like to hear this when they start playing R-Type: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MChI7B9On8g&feature=related

I like my SNES, sure, but there aren't that many things to put on it.

True, aside from copier units and the Super-8(Tri-Star) adapter. I have a copier unit myself(SuperCom Pro. 1), and I always leave it plugged into my Super Famicom(acts like a cartridge slot extension to play US Super NES carts).

Agreed about the SMS sound, it's pretty ear-shattering.

Tell me about it. I think out of the games I own, the one with the worst music is R-Type. While the music for Stage 1 and boss battles is fine, the rest is absolute crap, especially the music for Stage 3(seriously, it'll make you cringe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE5kmhYpCOU&feature=related)

Ace, do you know of a light gun for the Genesis that's good? I don't have a Menacer and don't think I even want one.

Aside from the Konami Justifier(like on the Super NES), no.

@Ace
I saw that converter you made, that was pretty cool, now I wanna make one! I looked around for a compatible chip but the only thing I came up with after a small search was an OEM supplier-- and a $500 minimum order. I wonder if there's a different ship that can be substituted. Hmm... I do a bit of wood work, how cool would a wooden housing be?

Ace
12-27-2008, 12:30 AM
I don't think there's a substitute available for a YM2413. You can get one from a Yamaha PSS-170 or PSR-6 keyboard(should run about 20-50 bucks), though I've had a hard time finding those, and stupid me, because I wasn't sure that the Yamaha PSR-6 had the YM2413, I let one go(damn it!).

If you can make a wooden housing like the real Power Base Converter, I say go for it. Actually, I say go for it no matter what you'll make it look like.

nathanallan

I can't find one either (along with the Duo and TG16, didn't mean to ignore you, tom). When anyone around here that is a seller thinks they have something rare or whatever they tend to jack up all the prices. So I am forced to pass on those.

Recently added: Sega Dreamcast black Sports edition ($5 at swap as parts but works great). I am thinking of doing a DC network through my PC. Mad networker, right here:twisted:

They had a Duo at out local use Bookstore about a year ago for $150 and I even thought that was to much. I have a TG16 with the Cd the but the supercard is seems to nearly impossible to find since it was a mail order item. I could get a Japanese one but then I would have to buy a $100 adapter. Even Magic Engine costs $15. It is slightly maddening. I have a copy of Dracula X and I want to play it.

I'm tight on space but have it well organized and catalogued so organization is minimal. I actually cut down on buying drastically in the past few years now just to enjoy what I have more. I just picked up a PS1 with a screen to get more use out of the PS1 games I have when I'm on the road so I have more ways to enjoy what I have now.

When my game collecting used to be in smaller quarters it was a real pain to keep it organized but once I moved to my apartment with more space and catalogued it now gaming is far more enjoyable.

You will have to post some pics of all your box variations together ninjabearhug!

So i still haven't managed to get a group shot of them all, but i have managed to get decent shots of all the boxed Sega consoles i currently own apart from a few GG's, not including doubles (i have quite a few spare, but the hoarder in me doesn't want to sell them :p). I'm currently taking pics of all my MD games, not a task i'd recommend....

Holy shit some of you own a lot of consoles... Here is what I have:

Atari 2600 (Heavy Sixer and flashback 2) I keep this in the closet. I don't have room to set it up and I use emulators to get my 2600 retro fix rather than deal with rf output which I hate.

SNES (model 2)

Genesis (Model 1, II, and 3)

Nintendo 64 (Apple green model and boxed grey model)

PS1 (original style)

PS2 (phat model)

Also Gameboy color (purple), GBA SP2 (Graphite), DS Phat and Onyx DS Lite.

I guess my laptop doesn't technically count as a console, but I use it as one and play a lot of classic pc games with it (Toshiba Satellite Intel dual core running Vista)

This is what I have now, but over the years I've owned (when new) NES, Turbo Grafx, Atari Jaguar, Turbo Express, Atari Lynx, Atari 400, 800xl, 130xe,a heavily expanded Amiga 500, a couple Gamecubes. Unfortunately back in the day I would sell my old system to afford games for the new system...

Important stuff:

Genesis Model 2
Sega CD Model 2
Saturn
Dreamcast
Game Boy Micro

Other:

PSX
DS Lite
Game Gear
PSP Fat (this would be in the other list, but the d-pad is fucked, and several of the face buttons are really slow to bounce back up)

And then my brothers have a Wii, GameCube, and PS2 between them, but I don't play those very often. I guess we have an N64 as well, but tbh I haden't even thought of it in ages. It's probably in storage somewhere. About the only reason I would actually have for digging it out would be if I found a copy of Mischief Makers, though.
