Ladies and gentlemen, well, who am I kidding? Gentlemen, I give you Castlevania Bloodlines:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/angry-video-screwattack/59132
How do you like that?
EDIT: I posted this as soon as I saw that he mentioned Bloodlines. Alas, his synopsis of it was all too brief. I still haven't finished the video, sorry if I raised and dashed your high hopes.

I've never played that PS1 game... Looks pretty good. But i've never really gotten into Castlevania anyways....

I just started playing Castlevania Chronicles last night, and so far I'm extremely impressed. I wish I'd picked it up when it was first released at (I think) a budget price, because last I checked it can fetch a pretty penny on eBay. All the reviews were like, "it's a few steps back and it's really hard," and at the time I was foolish enough to believe that that's a bad thing.

It's 5.99 on the PSN for PSP/PS3. Great deal. :ok:
I find the game to be a needless bitch to play on any platform, the enemy sprites are hard to see against the background & create an artificial difficulty. For both play-modes.

Yeah, I'm sorry. I definitely jumped the gun on that one. When I saw him start talking about Bloodlines, I got excited and had to tell you guys, then I was left to wallow in my own disappointment.

That's too bad, Bloodlines is an awesome game that deserves a lot more of a look through.

I agree, try tried some cool things like visual trickery, alternate weapons. and even super jumping for when you need to barely escape a scrolling hazard. After bloodlines, we never saw these features used to either its full potential or at all.
2 years ago I can say I loved castlevania, still do but I have no idea where the series is aiming to go, what are they trying to achieve?
Anyways, heres to hoping AVGN takes on the worst game possible and makes tons of jokes equivalent to that pork chop and candle joke in castlevania pt.1

I was glad he recognized it, but he talked about it for all of 30 seconds. Also, it appears that he doesn't realize that Eric Lecarde is the superior character. John Morris sucks.

I really don't understand why he didn't cover Bloodlines in further detail, I was so excited to see that he was doing it as the first game in the video. Shortly after though, I was sorely disappointed that he only spent like a minute and a half on it or so. Come on man, you know it's a good game, give it the love and respect it deserves.:shame:

I've only played it in Fusion for a while, but I chose John. I don't like the idea of playing Castlevania without a whip. I'm holding off playing it anymore until I get my cartridge copy in the mail, I feel like if I play through it now that I may not wanna play it when I get it, although I probably will. I've yet to use Eric, so I cannot tell you which on is better, per se. I just would like to stick to tradition and play as the guy with the whip.

I thought it was James Rolfe, not the Nerd. I think he is a lot better when he just cusses at the game rather than playing out some stupid skit.
Yeah, his information was great, but he was very subdued. He didn't have much bad to say, because the games are good for the most part.

That's all well and good, but Eric is the better character. He's got an awesome high jump, he's got more directions he can attack in, and he just looks cooler. I don't know. John Morris is just a lot less fun to play as. It's still worth it to play through with both characters, as there are different paths through the levels depending on who you're playing as, but still. Lecarde > Morris :D

Lecarde > Morris :D
That seems to be the common consensus on the internets. I do like how Eric can high jump and that John can swing from his whip Indiana Jones style.

Yeah, it seems me and the AVGN have the exact same opinions as far as part 4 goes. Bloodlines was really good, but not quite as good as IV, and SOTN is just too damn complicated for its own good. Seriously, who thinks all of that item collecting is fun?

I just started playing SOTN the other day, haven't gotten to far in it but I can already tell that it is indeed overly-complicated.

I dunno. As far as Metroid-style, RPG-infused, side-scrolling games go, it's basically perfect. It doesn't have a whole lot in common with the Castlevania games that came before it (apart from the title and the Big Bad), but it's still a really great game. It's just not a "pure" Castlevania experience.
I am pretty tired of the "Metroidvania" formula now though. I haven't played it yet, but Castlevania ReBirth looks to be the best thing Konami has done with the franchise since... well, since Symphony of the Night.

Don't get me wrong, it seems like an amazing game. It's just that it seems like there's so much going on with the RPG elements and the items and artifacts and all that jazz. I also don't know how to do any of the special moves as I'm playing it via an emulator.

I don't really have much of a desire to play SOTN or any of the Metroidvanias. I've played the metroids and I just don't like that gameplay style. I always end up getting lost and afraid that I won't be able to finish the game because I couldn't find some stupid item in a hidden room. I don't want to have to think too much when I'm playing a game. They're supposed to be an escape.

That's actually exactly how i feel about the genre. They're both amazing games, I just always get lost and don't know what to do next. Also, I hate backtracking. I LOATHE it, in fact.

Then you better stop playing.. RIGHT NOW! There's a lot of back tracking in the game. The "metriodvania" with the least amount of back tracking is PoR on NDS. Also, you don't *need* a lot of these special items and what not. It's added gameplay for when you've beaten. I.e. more stuff you can do.
I like the old style Castlevania series, but the metriodvania just have much more to offer. I'm not looking for a quick 30-60 minute run through of a game anymore. I want something that's going to last for like 20 hours or more. The NDS games are perfect for this (and SOTN on PSP). I even try not to speed through them. I rather enjoy a long game I can pick up and put down.... and not have it just be a traditional RPG. I like actions games.
OoE is by far my fav castlevania game. You're not stuck in some castle and you get to see a lot of different areas. Even a haunted house. It's also harder than any other in the series (well, the bosses mostly). And that's a definite welcome because metriodvania games are kinda easy in general - IMO.
About SCV-IV, it was awesome when it came out. No doubt about that. From beginning to end, it didn't disappoint. Bloodlines... really disappointed. I was expecting much-much more than that. Especially considering all the incredible/impressive stuff being released on the Genesis... then you get Bloodlines. It's not a bad game per se, it's just not up to Genesis standards at the time - IMO. If it was released in 1991, then I would have been fairly happy with it. Some of the graphics in Bloodlines even look a little 8bit-ish.

Which is OoE? I stopped paying attention to the names because the games really aren't that much different from the others these days, yet I still buy them all. The most recent DS edition had me get up to Dracula, but I purposely lost because I didn't want to beat the game yet as I did not have 100%. I then never turned the game on again.

Order of Ecclesia. The latest of the NDS ones. There's this magic where you can turn into a cat girl... I love that cat-girl mode haha. The attack amount is lower, but you get super fast claw attacks. And you walk on all fours :D
I played them out of order: PoR,OoE,DoS. I liked Dawn of Sorrow the least.

I don't even remember which one that is, and I've played and beaten them all (with the exception of Order of Excelsior).

Just saw the video. Yep, he blew it. Not just for mentioning Bloodlines for only like 30 seconds, but also for getting the facts wrong. He critizises the game for not being able to attack diagonally upwards like you could in Castlevania IV. When in fact, you can, if you choose Eric Lecarde.
Well, he is more of a Nintendo fanboy.

Also, he should have reviewed Chronicles as opposed to Symphony of the Night. I mean, if he doesn't like the Metroidvania style, he should have played one that was more in line with the previous games in the series.

I believe you can achieve the same thing with John Morris just by jumping and holding up when you attack.
