Some may remember an auction not too long ago on ebay for a Sega Channel cartridge that previewed the service. Well today it was finally dumped by LocalH of the Sonic Retro and Hidden Palace boards. Here's a link to the ROM.

Nice to finally have all that music in its entirety :) Since this is just a preview of how the service "looks" however, there's no playable game previews on the cart or anything. Still a unique thing to finally see for those of us who never had this service, and probably a huge nostalgia trip for those who did!

That's pretty awesome how they did that.
Now someone can like randomly bring back Sega Channel. That would be even more awesome.
That Toejam & Earl style music is awesome!

I just checked and it works great on the NEO card!
first thing you get is a message about the cart not receiving a signal,
but if you then press the white button on top of the cart it will play just fine.
Man i said it once and I'll say it again, this would be the ultimate frontend menu for a flashcard.
If only i knew how to program, I'd totally work on decompiling this rom and changing it into a menu.

It's really nice, but too big. The current cart burning software limits the menu to 44KB. I'm hoping that gets relaxed eventually. The flash carts the Neo Myth uses have 2MB of menu flash, so you could make a really AWESOME menu if you used the whole thing.

Aha!
I remember back a few years i was bidding on the Sega Channel cart device thing on Ebay a few years back. I didn't really know what it did, all i knew is that i could plug it in our Cable outlet. I think it was going for £15. Almost made mum buy it, but somehow just didn't get around to doing it. LOL
Now i know it would have been a waste of money specially since the service long ago stopped before i purchased it. LOL

And it was US only IIRC. Japan had SegaNet some three or four years earlier but I doubt hat service was around longer than a year or two.

According to wiki Sega Channel was international
The service was also available in Canada through Shaw Cable, in some parts of the United Kingdom on certain cable services, in Chile on the defunct Metropolis Intercom cable company, in Argentina on a national TCI branch, Cablevisión TCI. and in Australia on Austar and the now defunct Galaxy.

I fucking knew it!! I read about The Magical Quest coming to the Genesis long ago in Gamepro or EGM,
but the game was never released, but now it seems that a playable version once existed.
so its not like it was scrapped.

That is win right there.
Also anyone notice the Backdrop test?

Man all this Sega Channel talk made me want to mess with my own Sega Channel adapter again,
(the general instrument version) and i was very surprised to see it finally boot.
because the first time i tried it i got the warning screen right away, about the adapter not receiving a signal and all.
but this time it went through the boot up process with Sonic and the whole Sega Channel logo thing.
fucking sweet to see it on the real thing, I was thinking of trying to dump it,
but after reading up on it it seems that a dump already exists but does the same thing. (not giving a menu)
What is fun is that the music in my cart is different then music from this new rom that we've been discussing.
So it might be worthless but fuck if it doesn't look cool on my MD.

(disconnected my Mega CD just in case the thing decided to fry something)

and oddly enough the Sega Channel logo looks different when I run the thing on my Nomad,
the little guy icon is on the left then, might be a region thing?

You know, I went to VGXPO and saw the other version of the Sega Channel cart, should've picked it up at $10 but didn't have much money on me.

it'll probably still be there, it doesn't do anything useful anymore.

Lol, VGXPO was a 3-day game convention a month ago.
This is pretty cool. I added some new pics to our Sega Channel article.
