believe it or not, a good quality, non-MACROVISIONed DVD source
like most of my DVD Anime collection, actually looks smashingly good
on those MAXELL HGX GOLD Hi-Fi blanks, at least when recorded with this particular VCR.

seriously, the difference in resolution between VHS and DVD is rather steep
on paper, but i'm shocked just how little perceived detail is actually lost
when dubbing a DVD to a top-quality videocassette blank, using a top-shelf VCR...

I was bit scared to cut the cord but I'm glad I did. I still have an old Philips CRT and I just had basic. I picked up a fancy converter box, its actually for for directv but has a tuner, toslink and coaux digital outs, hdmi, Vga, basically freak'n everything and I got it for whatever $.30 a pound at my favorite thrift store. Now I have 5.1 on most stations and the picture looks much better even on the SDTV. We have the all PBS stations , plain PBS, Create( home improvement, cooking) and World (news mostly). We also have a movie station that plays all sorts of weird stuff and a music video station that actually plays music videos. Its pretty awesome and I save $50 a month.

Thats a beautiful VCR.
