Just spent two hours surfing through countless tech sites and Youtube tutorials; my sound card for some dumb reason wouldn't allow me to activate the Stereo Mix. Finally found a useful blog, that explained that I needed to download a driver, modify the inf file and then manually install it. Pain in the ass and the fix was flipping simple.
Oh well, shit happens. It got sorted in the end, so I'm okay.

Over the past few months, I have been sitting my son down and forcing him to watch the original Star Wars movies. Not surprisingly, he already knew who many of the characters were. He seemed pretty entertained, but I could tell he was waiting to see some of the "new" trilogy stuff that he's been seeing... somewhere.
I own the new episodes, but I WILL NOT be the one to expose him to those films.
On a side note, when we watched Return of the Jedi, I was surprised at how affective many of those scenes were, Ewoks or no. It's a shame Lucas is incapable of delivering any of that kind of stuff now. He's more machine now than man... Twisted and evil.

Jar Jar isn't as bad as what people make him out to be; he's a pretty tolerable character, in my opinion at least.
I think the reason most people hate him, is because he's basically a flat, 2d comedy character that was inserted in, for no reason except for cheap laughs, into a film series alot of people grew up with and love. But people have to understand Lucas pulled the same stunt in RotJ with the Ewoks; you don't hear people complain about them as much, though.

Wait, you liked The Sphere? I loved the book, but what little I saw of the movie was terrible. Hardcore over-acting from Dustin Hoffman, and they couldn't even show the giant squid because they were somehow under-budget. :shame:
I saw Mimic in high school when it came out. Somewhat decent, although the lead actress needs to seriously suck some helium before delivering her lines, on account of her man voice. The main thing I remember about the movie is that it killed off kids: taboo to all but the bravest horror films.
The Relic was awesome only because it was SO much better than I expected it to be. My dad and I saw it together because we both read the book. The book's monster was actually pretty stupid (a reptilian gorilla, basically), but the movie's version was fantastic. I think we only went to see it because Stan Winston did the creature effects. On a side note, I wrote a review of this movie for my high school newspaper and said that Michael Madson was the lead actor. Sorry, Tom Sizemore!
Edit: I never saw Phantoms because I thought the book was stupid. Dean Koontz is a hack, IMO.

I've figured out why I'm finding so hard to get into; it's not just a JRPG; it's also a grinding one. This game is like Pokemon on fucking steroids; instead of going forward, battling a little and then progressing on to the next area, this game requires you to spend loads of time, battling the same creatures in each area so you can level up before you can move on to the next location - levelling up takes for ages (i'm at level 3 with ONE character and I've been playing for about 2hrs, no kidding) and the amount of foes is frickling so low, it's getting really repetitive.
I'm really, really hoping that once I get into the swing of things (which I'm starting to do), levelling up will speed up. This type of genre is not really my thing, it's a clear reason why I haven't touched a Pokemon game since the early 2000s; as much as I enjoyed playing them, it was fucking long and too drawn-out. Oh well, I'll push on.

That might be your idea of fun and I'm not criticizing, but it's not mine. Grinding and random battles were the reason I fucking hated about games like this; given it credit where it's due, Pier Solar is good with random battles; there's a balance between them.

I've played through two Pokemon games (Blue and the recent SoulSilver version, which was just an updated port of Silver, which I had only played halfway through before). Both experiences were almost maddeningly addictive, although not to the point where I was compelled to play any of the new games.
That last bit sounds like a cop-out, and maybe it is. But the two games I played we're awesome, but I sunk about 200 hrs into SoulSilver, according to the in-game clock. That's not an experience I want to invest in again. Plus, the "kiddie" image the series has just makes it that much easier to write off.

Yeah, pretty similar experience, but I got into it at the height of the series' popularity and I was a young teen, so I was really into it, collected those shitty trading cards, and even went to see that crappy movie in the cinema (that I regret alot).
The first game I played was Red, had that for about two years, played it constantly; traded with other kids at school, built up a killer squad, had loads of link battles, even brought a cheat cartridge just so I could get Mew. Then, I got Silver when that came out. I remember a friend asked me to swap Red for three of he's games; I did and that's how I stumbled upon Gargoyles' Quest.
Silver was more of the same, but amplified by 20; I did everything as before, but I loved this one oh so much more. After that, I never got a GBA and as the years when by, and I had the ability to emulate the GBA games, I just couldn't hold any interest in them; got up to like the second town and turned off; it was just too much of the same.
Maybe it's nostalgia, but I find the classic GB Pokemon games the best; the rest are just pale imitations in comparison.

I imagine it's just that with an adult's perspective, there isn't a whole lot of appeal of starting such a long process over with an entirely new game and doing essentially the same thing. I had no problem getting into SoulSilver, since that was a "classic" remake that used characters that I was already familiar with from Blue/Red and my previous experience with Silver. Maybe kids in the 6-13 demographic have the patience to sink hundreds of hours into each Pokemon revision and obsess over an increasing number of increasingly ridiculous new Pokemon designs. I don't.
I'll be happy to play through Blue or Silver again someday, but that's where the series ends for me.

Story? They don't really have one; the whole point is just to go from one town to the other, capture creatures, level them up, build up a squad and take on bosses. Rinse - wash - repeat.
Single player is addictive; balancing out your team and getting into tough battles and winning with the scrape of your teeth are the highlight of the game (for me at least).

It sounds pretty mundane written out like that, but the formula is rock-solid and dangerously engrossing. There's a reason why there are so many of these games.

Which saddens me, because I got into RPG's because true click & search adventure games died a horrible death around 1998.
So for me RPG's gave me the story that I craved, and even though I was forced to deal with the grinding I accepted it because I enjoy adventures.
Now though with the aspect placed more on grinding then ever before I find myself without an adventure outlet.

It's just a cardboard sleeve with the two indivial DVD releases packaged together.

I'll have to hunt down that Special Edition for the deleted scenes alone, no doubt it's Region 1 only, but that's no prob. As for the interviews, I can go one better (in a way):

Saw it in a charity shop on the outskirts of the city in the shop window, love the film, so I went in and brought it. This was released at the same time as the film itself and is basically a scene-by-scene breakdown with exclusive pics, interviews with Dante and the rest of the cast and crew, and a two page poster, all of which I'm pretty sure is no where to be found online. If you want, I've got an old scanner that might work, tomorrow I'll scan the entire thing and post it.

It has some stills, but it's mostly behind the scenes pics. There's storyboards (quite alot I might add), pics of the cast, as well as pics of the the crew doing their stuff behind the camera.
In the storyboards, there alot of differences, which you could say are could be passed of as concept artwork - Gizmo looks nothing like he's portrayed in the final version of the film for example. If want just the storyboards, I'll post 'em when I can.

I love the movie, but it's thematically schizophrenic. Light-hearted comedy to start with, genuinely scary second act as the gremlins hatch from their cocoons and kill people. Then wacky slapstick antics as the gremlins run amock. Then back to the darker stuff as Stripe attempts to kill off the main character with saw blades, a crossbow, a chainsaw, and finally a handgun. And then Stripe has an extended and disgusting death scene.

Can you believe it? They have a commercial on TV advertizing "Internet Explorer", which is pathetic. They must know that "Mozilla Firefox" is king, and they're scared of losing customers, but this commercial isn't going to help them. Instead, it's only going to make them look desperate, and even more pathetic.

Today blows; passed a second hand shop on my way home and came out thinking I had made the best haul I had made this year so far: a 360 HD DVD Player (£17), a 20 gig HDD for the Original Model 360s (£5), Hitman for the PC (32p) and Xploder v4 cheat cd for the PS1 (50p).
Wow, I thought, I wanted to buy some cheap HD DVDs, I'll grab the player. Take it home, unbox it and...no power supply or usb link lead. I'm annoyed, but I can still take it back in the morning.
Other than that, Hitman is pretty much the same price online, so is the 360 HDD (which I plan to take apart and mod so it'll fit into my Slim). The only bargain i got was the Xploder, which I got for 50p, and regularly sells online for £10+.

If you happen to have one laying around, the power supply is 12 volt 2.5A. Not exactly common though...

Nah, I don't. I took it back and got a refund; pretty sure it's illegal to sell electrical goods without checking them, which they couldn't have done if they didn't have the PSU to test it with. Either way, I'm never going back there again.

I had to Google that up. For a portable NES on a chip system, it looks alright - I say "go for it". BTW, Amazon are selling it for 5 bucks less at $45; although that's without P&P and tax.

Yeah, I was hoping either you, Sheath, or Jesse had already tried it and would be able to give a review. I've tried one of Hyperkin's Yobo Famicom systems and found it cheap and unreliable. I'd be more forgiving with a portable system, though.

Oh, it irks me when Ebay sellers get pushy with the kind of feedback they expect. On the past few auctions I've sold, I've specifically told my buyers to feel free to leave whatever feedback they feel I deserve.
I just got an email from a seller reminding me to leave him 5 STAR FEEDBACK. So I logged on and promptly left him a bunch of two's and three's. He's lucky I even gave him "positive."

So...anyone bag a decent haul as of late?

Kinda sorta. I got a pretty good deal on a GameBoy Pocket bundle recently, although the seller is taking his sweet time getting it to me (he lives in Fresno, which is only a few hours away from Sacramento, and yet it's almost a week later and I still haven't gotten it). Blue GBP with 10 games, many of which I shockingly don't have, for $30.
Then there's the Super C, StarTropics, Goonies II lot I won recently for $11 shipped. That should be coming before too long.
And this one, which I've already posted in the Haul thread, which was last weekend:
Picked up a bit of stuff today.
Donkey Kong for the Atari 2600 (has a different label than the cartridges I usually see) $2
Viewtiful Joe for GameCube (CIB) $7
Star Tropics II for NES (it came in one of those plastic game cases, and I just noticed that the instructions are included!) $5
Dynamite Heady for Game Gear $2
The Smurfs for GameBoy $2
Final Fight for SNES $8
Oh, and I also bought a backpack. I plan on going to the flea market next weekend and I hate carrying stuff around.
6743
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/crap/stuff1.png http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/crap/stuff2.png
This lot. (Not my furnishings, I just lazily used the pics from the eBay auction :P) The N64 games are Zelda, Mario Kart 64, Mario 64, South Park Rally, Diddy Kong Racing, Yoshi's Story and Goldeneye. All CIB in great condition. Everything in the photos (plus an empty N64 box and a couple of awful yet fun Doctor Who PC games) cost me £25, which I'm very happy with.
Also finally got hold of a Sonic Generations presskit for around 70 euros, Korean Sonic the Hedgehog (MD) and a couple of SMS game multicarts (via Molotovwars), and a few more Game Gear games.
It looks like my luck has run out now though, since the Italian postal service has seemingly screwed me over and never delivered a GG game I've been after for ages. (Its been over two weeks since it was sent, tracking appears to have died, and the seller's buggered off on holiday now argh). I'm especially annoyed since I specifically asked for (and paid extra for) good, properly trackable shipping - as everyone knows Italian post is not reliable. I'm sure I can get a refund if it never arrives, but that's not the point. Meh! I knew that bag of Game Boys I sacrificed to the retro game Gods was a bad idea. :(

Yeah, I used to want GG Mega Man for a while, but after I tested it out, I found that the the low resolution makes it difficult to see where you're going sometimes, especially one particular spot in Bright Man's stage, where you can easily fall into a ditch.

Good luck with that one! All I have is a bootleg Mega Man cart - likely to remain that way too :/ I don't think I'll be looking for many US GG games, or Jp for that matter. (I'm just after Panzer Dragoon Mini, refuse to pay £100 for the damn thing though.) I started trying to get the full Euro set last year, once I realised I was only 'missing' around 40 (and most of them weren't sports games) but I'm 8 away now. That is the last proper "rare" I need - it's just frustrating. Ugh - I don't know how people manage to amass minty Sega full sets (especially non-Jp). It's probably easier if you live outside the UK (or even near a decent retro game shop or carbooting area) but if you have to rely on internet sites it sucks. Even if you manage to find everything, and have enough disposable income to waste on Sega boxes, you have to trust sellers to pack them properly (sad how many people people apparently don't know how or purely can't be arsed) and rely on postal carriers to actually deliver them to you. I'd never have that patience - finding my stupid quest difficult enough as it is. And I'll stop here as I'm boring even myself. ;P
now thats a GOOD haul :ok:
Thanks Jesse. I'm happy with it - don't think I've ever done so well from evilbay. That stuff had only just been listed when I pounced on it ;)
