View Full Version : Repaired my Saturn, now where do I go from here?
Hello all, aaaaggggggeeesssss ago I got a Sega Saturn for cheap, it came with control pad, Alien 3, RF cable and power lead.
I plugged it in and it didn't work, what a shit...
The power supply was dead and I wasn't motivated to look at it any further. It was going to be binned then I thought I would keep it for parts.
Anyway I got a Saturn from my local Game Traders to look at and one of it's pins for the AC looked damaged, so I thought I would switch the AC socket with the one from mine. I de-soldered one leg of the AC socket in mine and the socket fell off! AH there's the fault the 2nd leg was broken, so adding my own leg to the AC socket had my Saturn up and running! Sweet! I also got the Game Traders one going as well.
Now I am thinking of getting a mod chip for it and an Action Replay thing. I am also considering adding a 50/60Hz switch. If I get the the Action Replay thing is it necessary to do the region switch/es as well or since the Action Replay thing plays other region games this would be unnecessary work?
As usual getting everything from the USA is cheaper than getting it in my own country (Australia)....... :? Which leads to this comment, sorry for asking these questions but I think the Saturn was even less popular here than it was in the States.
I have modded my saturn a bit by fitting my own AV sockets and S-video sockets, which I am more than happy with. The RF lead I found out later (ah well) the plug is not sealed and can be pulled apart, and has the pins for composite video and stereo sound. So I cut the RF lead off and added my own yellow, white, red plug and leads and it works fine. I will keep this as a test set..;)

...to the thrift store or flea market to get some more games for it. There are many awesome titles for the Saturn.
Is the Action replay worth it or should I just add the switches?
What games are a must have for the Saturn?
Again sorry about the questions but Saturn games are few and far between, can get them from ebay or oztion though.
Knowing my luck it would be cheaper to get the games from america as well.

Some can be found dirt cheap (Virtua Fighter 2, Darius Gaiden), while others will cost a couple of limbs (Radiant Silvergun, Stellar Assault SS). And yes, the 4-in-1 Action Replay (or other carts like it) are worth it. Lots of storage for game saves, and the ability to play the 1MB/4MB games like Vampire Savior, without having to install anything.
wow guys thanks for that, would the Action Replay cart work in my PAL machine? Thats not region un-happy is it?
I like the list of games too, that helps a lot. I guess what I could do is you tube some of those games to see if I like the look of them.

The Action Replay 4-in-1 is the most essential accessory you could possibly buy, and yes it works on PAL machines.
Saturn:
Baku Baku Animal (just buy it, Youtube videos are overrated)
Sega Rally
Daytona CCE
Saturn Bomberman
Darius II
Darius Gaiden
Shin Shinobi Den / Shinobi X / Shinobi Legends
Legend of Thor / Legend of Oasis
Guardian Heroes
Golden Axe: The Duel
Keio Flying Squadron 2
Clockwork Knight / 2
Layer Section aka Galactic Attack aka Ray Force
Sonic Jam
Panzer Dragoon Zwei - by far my favorite game in the series
High Velocity & Touge: King of Spirits 2 - good looking Saturn racers, only HV was released in the US
Hang-On GP '95 & Manx TT - not really that good IMHO but I know you like racing games ;)
Steet Racer - dunno if this was released in the US
Saturn Analog aka 3D aka Nights Controller - not a game but the controller you'll need, works with most if not all racing games

I think it's a possibility. When I bought myself a PAL copy of Panzer Dragoon from Australia, the guy sent me Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei. The guy said he played PD Zwei on his Saturn, yet it was a US copy that ran on my Saturn without my Action Replay put in the slot. Perhaps Mick will enlighten us on this.
It all arrived yesterday, the modchip and action replay cart.
Can anyone who knows about roms PM me please?

I have a Japanese Saturn along with a couple of UK imports and they work fine on my system with 4-1 cart.
All done and liking the Saturn, it's not a bad machine. Got the action replay 4 in 1 and have fitted the chip and 50/60Hz switch.
Grabbed a few games for it (none over $10).
Cyberia $5
Firestorm, Thunderhawk 2 $10
F1 Challenge $5
Blam Machine Head $5
Tomb Raider $5
magic Carpet $5
Panzer Dragoon $10
Doom $10
All the games are complete, unfortunately the first 2 I had to make copies of (read and burnt very slowly) Cyberia is still a bit iffy.
The guy who I do work for gave me an American Saturn where someone had plugged it into our 240v. He gave it to me to repair and told him no go it was an American model. He was going to throw it out, but I grabbed it instead (keep it for the laser if it was good, which it is etc). Opening it up again I realised it had been chipped (after i had already gotten one lol) and it also sported a VCD card. Are these cards worth anything or is it just a paper weight?
