Does the '32X' mean that this add-on is a 32 bit processor, or that it is 32 times more powerful than the Genesis? (Or are they both the same thing?)

It's because it's 32-bit and aimed at Generation X.

The "X" is probably just because X is a "cool letter" (according to marketing panels) and they couldn't just call it 32, and they were too lame to come up with a good name. At least it's descriptive.

Also, it allowed for their dorky ads, "32X the power! 32X the fun!"
