Are the early model PSXs particularly rare or desirable, the really early ones with RCA jacks on the back?
Like this japanese one, but without the s-video port:

the scph-1001, the one with the separate A/V ports.

That's generally considered a myth, not sure how it got started. I bought one for giggles just because I wanted an actual PS1 and the SCPH-1001 is like the HDG model 1 Genesis, though the reliability is generally considered sketchy due to plastic laser carriages. However, mine was apparently serviced by Sony as it has a refurbished sticker on it and a metal laser sled. So, I win, I guess, though it won't play some scratched discs that my PS2 will.

I had the first model Playstation and I'd never had a problem with it. It sucks that it was stolen out of my apartment about 9 years ago.

Wasn't there also a recall due to overheating power supplies on the very early models?

The thing is, I saw one at the local good will, I didn't examine it closely and it was taped up, so I'm not sure about any modifications, just the power cord and 2 original non-analog controllers.

That store also got a bunch of game stuff in recently, as I mentioned in the deals thread on t he genesis subforum I picked up a pre-tmss model 1 with classic sega 6-button and power supply for 14.99 -2 N64s with 2 controllers each one with RAM pak, 2 gamecubes, one kind of messed up, and the other with power adaptor and 1 controller -both early models with the digital out, plus a psone was there too, and a bunch of PSX games including TR 1-3 and a munch of sports titles. (plus a few genesis games, soem there for a few weeks already, soem new ones that maybe came with the M1, plus some N64 games, I picked up SSB and MK64 for $3 each, I have both, but seemed like a good deal and SSB at least sells fairly well online -the back label of mario kar is torn, so not sure about that one)

I don't really want a used PSX, mainly due to the good quality of emulation (and ability to use real discs) and with enhancements available in emulators. (though I think the PS2 also features soem added video features for PS1 games, and I'd assume PS3) Plus, I don't really care for the sony pads, buttons and d-pad are less comfortable than SNES, though the triggers are more usable at least.

However, weren't the early models lacking security (thus playing backups)? What about region locking, did all models have that?

That's the one I have, except it doesn't have the s-video jack. Still works fine.

Don't want a PS1? Okay, but I'll never pass up a $5 console that can be modded pretty cheaply. Right now I have several that work great, at least two are getting modchipped. Also with LEDs, can't forget those.

I had one, and I had to turn it upside down.

This one's $15 currently.

IMHO no.
Unless you rip out the CD drive, and put one in from a newer model.
I had to play my PSX upside down for it to read discs.

You can do that mod really easily btw...

I have the same model, I bought it on launch day. Last time I used it (like 7 years ago) it suffered from overheating problems and the laser seemed like it was going. I haven't used it since because my PS2 works great.

The originally PSX had a pretty high failure rate and that is one reason why Sony sold so many consoles.

I have to turn mine upside down, but only if I want it to read CD-R discs.

I have one that had a dead spindle, but since I had a dead white PSone around with a good laser(suffers from the weirdest problem possible: the 17.734MHz crystal on the system is section clean in half, HORIZONTALLY... WTF?), I swapped the lasers around. Works really nicely except when it's kept on for extended periods of time since the music and FMV videos in my games skip, but EVERY PlayStation I have, whether it's the SCPH-1001, SCPH-5501 or the smaller PSone, do the same thing after they're left on for an extended period of time.

I've got one of the first Japanese PSX consoles. I installed a toggle switch to replace the lid switch so I could play US games on it. Never had any problems with it.

I've only ever had a PSOne. In regards to the topic, however, I see model 1 PSX consoles very often at thrift shops these days.

Wait, that is not possible because I've been informed by others on Sega-16 that no "real" thieves steal video game systems. What gives? This doesn't jibe with all-knowing posters on these forums...

They were talking about hardcore "I need lots of money" thieves, and you know that already.

Just drop it.

I had one of these first models. My friend bought it when it first came out in 1995 and he spend like $450 Canadian on it all said and done. He was by far the first person I knew to have a Playstation.

6 months later it was a train-wreak. The plastic rails were so worn out it would only read games if you played it upside down. No one knew why at the time but we just thought it was hilarious! The PSU went on it 3 times! The first two times he owned it. Then he sold it to me for like $80 or something retarded like that. I jumped on it even though it was a crap box. The thing was still worth like $300 at that time! I was so freaking excited to have such a high tech machine at the time but the PSU blew on me like 10 minutes into playing it! Hahaha no joke! But it was only the solder coming into the back from the AC input. So my Dad fixed it for me at the time.

It had a weird RF modulator too that plugged into the mono AV coaxial jacks and had a 3.5mm jack that it must have used for extra power?

Anyway I heard the same thing from a lot of sources. That model PS1 being a really good CD Player. I'm sure it's better than most cheap consumer CD players by the mid 90's but I'm not sure if it really hangs with audiophile level players. But hey anything's possible!

Yeah, they could have stolen my wife's jewelry if that was the case; It was an inside job by the maintenance crew.

My wife called maintenance everytime something was slightly broken. I'd warned her that letting someone check out our apartment that many times will eventually lead to getting ripped off. Luckily we had insurance.

A friend of mine got a brand new PS1 when it came out, about a week or so after launch. I was a bit jealous, all we had was the 2600, my Dad never let us get anything else because that one was so expensive at the time. I can't remember if he ever had problems with it or not.

I've mentioned it before, but all we had was an NES until '95/96 (unless you cound a 2600 in a box in a cabnet in the back of the laundry room that had no AC adaptor -or one that was floating around the house separately, no RF switch box, but several games +2sticks and paddles -my mom had gotten at a garage sale -and got used fianlly ~2000)

Anyway, yeah, Just NES my dad got the year I was born ('89), and PC games. (not all that many, but on top of edutainment, stuff like X-wing, Myst, Return to Zork, some games I only recently realized we had at the time too, and a lot of later games, but that was about it up to ~96)

Jerry Couerl and 17days told me that no real thieves "check out" or even "case" somebody's place for video game related stuff. Just ask the experts...

I had a release model Playstation, I got it replaced within the first month. It had the extra AV ports as shown in that picture. It played perfectly for years, until recently the drive stopped spinning discs. Fortunately I had 2 later models laying around that I could pinch parts from to get it going again. Never knew they had power supply issue's? Maybe that was US power supply issue?

PimpUigi

I got mine after the power supply issue was corrected. (still had the RCA outs)

Also, my Xbox 1 never had a power supply issue either, and it was a launch version.

My Xbox never actually had problems with its power supply, but it was one of the units covered under Microsoft's power cord replacement thingy. Even though I was pretty sure I'd never have a problem, I got the replacement one anyway. You didn't have to send in your old power cord, so I figured, hey, free cord.

That was the lamest recall ever, replacing the cords did nothing, it was a problem with a fre faulty power supplies, nothing to do with the passive cords. ;)
Still, free cord. :D (and it's not propritary either, so you may eventually use it with something else)

Hey, I have had weirder things stolen. When I was younger, I was really into Tamagotchi. I even bought a couple if Japanese Tamagotchi when I visited my relatives in Japan. Anyways, I never really played with those that much, so I kept them in a little Cardboard box on my dresser. ( I think it use to have a ton of candy cigarettes in it or something, and I thought the case looked cool) We were moving from NC to MO once, and we got some really cheap movers to do the job. I wanted to keep a couple of things aside so I wouldn't have a hard time finding them when we moved, one of those things being the box of Japanese Tamagotchi. I just left it on my bed while we went out to get some food, so I wouldn't forget it(and because we told the movers we would take care of the beds, and not to touch anything on them) When I came back, my sheets were ruffled and the box was gone. I think were also missing a lamp and some electronics. Oh, and we didn't leave them alone, we had our neighbor helping them and whatnot. Weird, right?

The new cords have a GFCI built in, but yes, they obviously don't address the underlying problem.

My cousin used to own the one with the RCA jacks.

I always find these PS1's to be so dirt cheap it isn't even funny.

I passed on one at the flea market today for $10, now that I think of it maybe I should have gotten it. Maybe next week. iirc it didn't have the RCA jacks on the back, just the multi-I/O port. It did have the parallel port.
