View Full Version : Mystic Defender
Remember when the Genesis launched and there were so many cool games to play? Yes, that September and the following months were chock full of great releases, and among them was Mystic Defender, a spiritual sequel, of sorts, to the Master System's SpellCaster. It had great graphics and gameplay, and plenty of weird enemies to dispatch. Read our full review (http://www.sega-16.com/2006/03/mystic-defender/) and see why you need to track down a copy pronto.

I need to do no such thing! In fact I already have the game, no need to have two. Geesh!
If you have a language switch on your Genesis, switch it to Japanese and play this game. Lots of new graphics.

Fun little game, and it isn't too hard to find. But when you get to the final boss, stop staring at it's boobs before you go blind.

In Japan, this was the sequel to Spellcaster. Spellcaster was Kujaku-Ou and Mystic Defender was Kujaku-Ou 2 Geneijou.

I remember when Sega was advertising Spellcaster as a Phantasy Star sequel.

CRV is right, the Japanese version is better graphically than the American version, with a totally different opening (possibly ending as well), as well as the player's sprite.

So does Mystic Defender take place after Phantasy Star 2?

Ah good ole Mystic Defender. I didnt like this game not because it was bad or ugly but a different reason. I had a friend introduce me to one of his buddies from school, he had a sega genesis and wanted to try out a few games because he only had two games (so did I batman and twin cobra).
We talked a few days and he was pumping up mystic defender as an awesome game. He told me if I can let him use batman the movie for a few days and I can use mystic defender. I decided to finally give him back the game after a few days and when I went to his house his parents told me that he went back home with his grandparents (in Texas; I live in Chicago, IL). I told his parents about the situation and they told me that he took his video game system.
Mystic defender was a decent game but batman the movie (for me) was worth at least ten times more then this game; also because I saved up my allowance for three months to buy Batman the game.

I've been trying to play this game now and can't see what the reviewer liked so much about this game. Anyone else like this game or get through the whole game, I made it to stage 3. How long is this game too?

I think there is only 5 or 6 levels. I beat the game once and never played it again.

Different graphics? I'd like to see these graphics! Can someone post any differences?

All I remember is that the levels had names, the main dude has a white robe outfit on instead, and the "swamp thing babies" on level two became flesh colored.

I got this game early on. I enjoyed it, and would give it about a 6.5-7. It's has some issues, but they don't keep it from being a fun play through now and then. It's not as hard as I've read some say it is, but the jumping sections can turn into a nightmare unless you're careful.
Oh, and I have one of the carts where the chick is nude. It's nothing amazing, but it is odd that Sega made her nude, then stuck a pink dress on her when no one was looking.

A censorship update?
Where in the game is this?
I'm curious as to what version I have.

The very end. The woman being held by the final boss will either be nude (original), or wearing a pink dress (update).

Man this game is turning out to be longer than I had expected. I got to the 7th level boss low on lives, and the game over screen reared its' ugly head once more. Ah well, I'll try again later/tomorrow.

"Shadow Blasters", a 1990 Genesis release from one of those obscure, pre-Sonic third-party developers which are long gone (Sage's Creation), bears a passing resemblance to this game, gameplay-wise.

I picked this one up yesterday and have really enjoyed it so far. I'm currently stuck in level 4 (lava level) but hopefully I'll progress.
I'm not sure if I've got the original rom or the censored version. Is there way to know outside of actually advancing to the last boss?

I have been playing this game for years although not from its launch. Still stuck at the lava level myself friend. Maybe one day I'll pass it.:daze: I still highly recommend this game regardless.

Resurrection!
I'm just wondering whether anyone's got any opinion about the copy of this game that I have just purchased. There are basically three dumped versions that I have found: the Japanese Kujaku Ou 2 rom, which shows the Japanese intro and graphics irrespective of the region setting, and the two revisions of Mystic Defender (nude + non-nude ending) that show either the Japanese or International intro, titles, and graphics depending on the region setting. My cart appears to be different to all of them. It is the Japanese Kujaku Ou 2 with the nudity, but the intro changes into the Mystic Defender intro with the Mega Drive switched to US settings. However, unlike the Mystic Defender roms, the title screen remains the same as the Japanese version and the character graphics (the main sprite at least, I haven't checked stage 2) are also the Japanese versions. Do I have an undumped revision?

Love this game! Although I'll admit it's graphics haven't aged too well. It doesn't look as good as I remember but still a good game.
And I know some of the appeal for me is coming from nostalgia so I'll give this one 7/10. (I feel like giving it 8/10)
The levels are not too long and I really enjoyed the boss fights. This game wins some serious point for it's weapons. They were unique and each one was useful at different times during the game. Knowing when to use what really helps.
Like some of those posts I've read I also got frustrated with the instant deaths on some of the stages (lava stage). But I also remember how pleased I was when I figured out a good strategy. On the lava stage I would select my flame weapon and charge it up just before those instant death jumps. When I landed a jump I would release the charged flame shot and incinerate the enemy who use to land on me and knock me back to my death. I was even more pleased when I figured out how to kill the end boss with the charged bouncy ball shot while being tucked in a safe spot where you would never get hit. Took forever but I was able to beat the game because of this cheesy method ;)

Shadow Blasters is a terrible game. If it were super cheap and in great shape I may buy it for the collection (as filler) but I know I'd never play this one. :yuck:

meh, everything about it is just fine, IMHO.
the U.S. M. DEFENDER was among some of the earliest Genny titles bought for me as a kid back in the day,
and i had kept the game until around 1993ish, when my mother found a an ad in the paper for a local woman
that did BUY/SELL/TRADE out of her house, and we ended of taking a bunch of my early Genny games over to her
for trade.
starting around the 2000's, i began to regret that decision, and started to actively hunt for replacements for those lost early titles.
i have since replaced pretty much every one of them with JPN MD originals by now,
and the JPN MD version of DEFENDER, "Kujaku Ō 2: Gen'eijō" ("Peacock King 2: Castle of Illusion") ( 孔雀王2 幻影城)
was one of the latest and most recent of my MD acquisitions;

Shadow Blasters' style of play is totally different from Mystic Defender. I hadn't realized I had the Japanese version of Shadow Blasters until I rifled through the Japanese games I had. When I played the game, I discovered that the controls were alot stiffer than what I imagined. Also, the game possesses 4 characters that you can interchange at any given time. The only thing that is common between both games is the power meter. Overall I prefer Mystic Defender.

Mystic Defenders controls are spot on and its more focused on platforming. Whereas Shadow Blasters is much slower and it feels like you're controlling a tank.
