View Full Version : Recommend me some SNES games

I searched and couldn't find this thread, so I hope I'm not making a copy.

I just got my first SNES in the mail today with Super Mario World and I need some more games for it. Don't get me wrong, SNES kisses the Genesis' ass, which is why I'm placing it directly behind the Gen on my shelf so it knows its place, but I want to expand my 16 bit collection. Suggestions?

well I Know a few you could get. Some of these are mainstream, the rest are sleeper hits.

Plok *Very cool platformer with a armless red and yellow Klansman*
Super Metroid
Pretty much any megaman game
The Magical Quest starring mickey mouse
Run Saber *a generic strider clone with a few cool quirks*
Any Donkey Kong country game.
Super Mario All-Stars
X-men mutant Apocalypse and Marvel Super Heroes.

Top Gear, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Jurassic Park...damn, I failed.
JVC NES Star Wars+Super Empire Strikes Back+Super Return of the Jedi...but that requires an NES to get the perfect video game Star Wars Trilogy...
I guess while we're on Star Wars, you should check out Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures as well.

I really can't think of many block buster games for the SNES that aren't on the Genesis, and not RPG's.
I hate RPG's too...so you won't get any good RPG suggestions from me.

What genre's are you into?

Here's a few off the top of my head:

Operation Logic bomb
Soul Blazer
Actraiser
Zelda 3
SMW (you already have it)
Super Mario All stars
Final Fantasy 2 and 3
Cybornator
Secret of Mana
Batman Returns
Super Castlevania 4
Super Space megaforce (super aleste)
Super R-Type (if you can handle to the super slowdown)
Gradius 3
Any SF2 games if you find them for dirt cheap
Pocky and Rocky
Super EDF (mostly cause I love the music in some stages)
Phalanx - it's average but decent/fun shooter
ChronoTrigger
Runsaber - a fun but cheap nock-off of strider
Hugane - if that's how you spell it. A ninja game
I would recommend Lagoon, but having recently replayed it - it's overly difficult. So I say pass on this one unless it's really cheap

That's all I can remember so far.

Batman Returns is really bad.
I wouldn't recommend that to anyone.

Get the Sega CD one instead.
I could go all into why, but to sum it up the Sega CD version comes together as epic (with 4 different endings, 5 if you count the training skill level) while the SNES one isn't epic, and you can only get the real ending beating it on Maniac...which is extremely hard, considering on Easy, bosses kill you in two to three hits, go down in about fifty-seventy, and it's hard to get the opening to hit them to begin with.

I can go on...but I'm going to bed and hoping I saved you from a horrible Return of Batman. (throwing enemies into windows is cool though, I love that, the Angry Video Game Nerd video shows everything cool about the game in five seconds, check it out)

obviously super metroid and zelda:link to the past, dk country 2 is the best of the franchise, final fantasy 3 is epic, f-zero gets old quick, super castlevania is one of the best castlevania games of all time very impressive almost in a revenge of shinobi kind of way, you should really check out r-type and the more impressive r-type 3 for all of youre side scrolling shooter needs(r-type is usually pretty cheap) of course you cant go wrong with the street fighter games and if youve got the money the ninja gaiden trilogy can be had on a single cartridge

I did forget Super Castlevania....that's the best Castlevania of all time.

It made little billy bite the neck of his teacher, and then I couldn't put him to bed without pretending that I am Dracula. I couldn't tuck him in without wearing a black cloak, and I couldn't kiss him goodbye in the morning without putting white make up on.

Little Billy, if you're reading this...I'll be home by daytime Son. I'm not a day walker!

No way! Sorry, but just no. While SNES Batman Returns isn't great by any means, it's a decent beat'em up side scroller. Batman Returns Gensis, while a *totally* different game on the Genesis/CD, is sooooooooooo nasty looking. It's worse looking that Batman on the NES. The design, the art direction, animation, everything for that game screams - generic-ass nasty US made Batman game. The SegaCD version is save only for the driving sequences. Anyway, Batman Returns is a decent game for SNES and worth picking up if you like Final Fight style games. It's better than Final Fight 2 or 3 for the SNES.

How has nobody said Super Mario Kart yet??

Other good games: Parodius, Pop & Twinbee, King Arthur's World... stuff like SFIIs and other beatemups are often better on SNES... DKC's okay, but nothing amazing (and I say that having owned it from new).

Hm... it's harder to rattle off a list of good stuff like I can do with MD/Gen games :/

But I love the Streets of Rage games, and that's why I hate SNES Batman Returns so much.

It basically feels like an insult to the genre.
Cookie cutter, copy and paste, Batman into Final Fight...I don't get why Catwoman has to be invincible for a hit that takes half your health.
I thought I wouldn't be able to complain, because I still finished on Easy on my last life...wrong. No ending on Easy.
You get increments of ending with skill level, but only the real ending on Maniac.

I don't remember, but I believe there's Easy, Medium, Hard, Special, and Maniac at the top (if not, take out Hard)

The SNES Batmobile level sucks, and wtf is up with the test tubes?

While at first the platforming levels of the Sega CD version seem bad, they go epic on you before you realize it.

Each mode of the game has it's own ending, with the "Platformer ony" mode having a good, and bad ending.
It's epic, it's got CD music and sound, and the driving levels have amazing graphics.

Yea, the platforming levels don't have the best graphics, and the game isn't telling us non stop story (like we didn't see the movie?) but it's epic.

Super NES Batman Returns has amazing graphics for the "platformer" equivalent levels...but the gameplay fails.
Get Final Fight, whichever was the best version SNES got.
Or better yet, get Streets of Rage 1&2 - you probably already have them for a reason.

PimpUigi: This isn't one of your "which is better" pro genesis thread. This a recommendation of some SNES games, not what Genesis/CD games to get instead.

There's also Batman and Robin for the SNES. It's also different than the Genesis one, so that in itself is worth a pickup (it's not just a port of another game). It's a fun game and a decent platformer. Kinda plain on the FX, but still good.

Smii recommend Parodius series, which I totally forgot about. I definitely recommend importing these. Also forget about UN Squadron. Awesome port. Actually better than the arcade (music, stage layout, etc).

I'll second some others have posted:
Axelay
Ninja Warriors
Super Turrican
Smash TV
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Shadow Run

Lots of great games recommended already, I'll second a few.

Sky Blazer
Super Mario Kart
Super Game Boy (must have!!)
Secret of Evermore
anything Star Wars
Darius Twin
Pitfall Mayan Adventure (mandatory, if you don't own it NOW you must own it at some point) j/k, still a fun game
Zelda Link to the Past
Urban Strike

Hey come on now, I take the SNES side often enough, it's almost 50/50 at this point, and I've had debates with other members when I take the SNES side.

You never have anything to say when I take the SNES side either.

In fact, not counting this topic, the last three times I discussed version vs. version with someone, I was on the SNES side.
I know you mean well. I'm just talking.

I completely agree with Smash TV (Genesis version is horrid,) and everyone should have Super Turrican 1 & 2, and Mega Turrican (which comes in between) for the full Turrican Trilogy.

I should recommend Alien³ and the Aero The Acrobat series.
Darius Twin is a great one if you like shooters, and Mario Paint is of course the best MS Paint clone to 16 bit consoles (it goes beyond being an MS Paint clone, includes music making, a mini game, in fact don't touch Art Alive! or "My Paint" or Wacky Worlds for the Sega systems, they don't touch it by a mile)

There's plenty more that could be added to this list, a lot of which has already been mentioned by others. I would check out www.racketboy.com and look through their lists of "defining games" and "hidden gems" for more.

Holy crap Syd Lexia (dyslexia - hardy har har :P ) is one hardcode *snerd* (snes fanboy nerd). Never let there be anything wrong with any SNES game... god forbid. His rant on Dracula X is hilarious too. Like no one ever read Gamefan or it's 4-5 page spread on Rondo of Blood, where they jizzed all over the game in the review. Not to mention EGM has some pieces on it IIRC. But no, no one ever heard of Rondo before. : rolleyes: Fool.

I think it was mentioned before, but if not, I'm going to throw Legend of the Mystical Ninja in. I had so much fun with that game. It's very quirky and has a ton of mini games. And if you like beat 'em ups, Sonic Blast Man is pretty fun and cheap too.
