Basically, if you've never played a particular and very popular game, or anything similar to that, post it here. This is mine:

... I've never played an Outrun game...

Is there a decent port on home consoles? Or will I have to MAME it?

The Genesis version of Outrun isn't too bad. It doesn't have the nice scaling of the Arcade version but it's a decent port I guess.

i dont think you can go wrong with either the genny or master system ports(pretty solid 8 bit racer with a good multiplayer mode)

Shocking truths:

I don't care much for the Sonic games. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonic 1, Sonic 2 is a decent follow up, but I got bored as hell by Sonic 3. I bought Sonic 1 on the day of its release and still have it (my box doesn't have that ugly "NOT FOR RESALE" banner on it). I borrowed Sonic 2 from a friend, I never got caught up in the "Sonic 2sday" hype. I resorted to renting Sonic 3 and later rented Sonic & Knuckles (without part 3). In my opinion the games just got worse and worse (and grainy looking!). The artwork style in part 3 is just plain ugly and Sonic & Knuckles looked even worse compared to the smooth graphics of parts 1 and 2. There wasn't too much to the original game to begin with and the sequels just felt tacked on. I still think Sonic 2 was an appropriate follow-up (minus Tails who has no right to exist), but I had just had enough.

I can barely get past the 2nd level of Contra Hard Corps. I've gotten past it before, only to die soon after. I really like the game, I just don't like losing over and over.
Also, I have never beaten Sonic 1, but I have beaten Kid Chameleon. Weird right? I beat Kid Chameleon on a sick day when I didn't even have the energy to get up and switch the cart.

I hate Streets of Rage 2. You can't time your punches cheaply like in the first one and Adam is not playable! They replace him with Skate for crying out loud!

Don't get me wrong, I love the scenery, especially the Aliens level... but the gameplay just loses it in favour of doing flashy combos.

I absolutely can not play The Secret of Monkey Island on Sega CD. I'm not sure that this game is too popular, but the constant loading times and trying to use the D-Pad like a mouse is not something I like. I do like the humor of the game so I may try to get an emulator for it and play it without the horrible loading time and actually use a mouse.

Opposite for me, of the 16-bit games, #&K is probably my favorite, 3 alone would still be my favorite otherwise, then 2, then 1 (CD is close) and Knuckles alone least.

Now I need to play the 8-bit games more, but so far, they're pretty awesome, I definitely like Sonic 2 for SMS. (having Green Hill 1/2 way through the game is a bit weird though)

My shocking truth: I don't like 2D platformer all that much, the 8/16-bit Sonic games, Yoshi's Island, and SMB1 are probably my favorites, but in general 3D platformers are more fun (probably why I like 3D blast more than most), that and SA1/2 are probably my favorite Sonic games because of that and that I like adventure games (almost all kinds) even more. (only flight sims more than that) And when I say all types, I mean 3D adventure/exploration games, Zelda type games, and graphic adventures to text based adventure games. (text probably my least favorite, but still enjoyable)

I can agree w/ part of the Sonic discussion. I think Sonic 1 is great, 2 is the best, and S&K is really good. However I think Sonic 3 is mostly just awful. Ugly graphics, bad music, lame cut scenes, worst Sonic stage ever (Carnival Night), the disappointment that you can't fight Knuckles at the end... I've always found Sonic 3 altogether disappointing. And it came out after the terrible Sonic Spinball!!! Oh the disillusionment!!!

JRedmond3
01-09-2010, 04:42 AM
Yup, Sonic 3 is definitely the weakest of the 16 bit games(barring Spinball). I'm really not a fan of Marble Garden, Carnival Night, or Launch Base Zone. Considering there are only 6-7 stages, that's like half the game.

"I hate Streets of Rage 2."

BLASPHEMER!!! I just reported you to be banned.

kool kitty89
01-09-2010, 05:16 AM
I'll say sonic 2 has the best special stage of any of the 16-bit games. I really need to try the 8-bit games more too.

IDK, The only real plus to S3&K is the knuckles levels (with more access to added areas), otherwise the music is awesome (albeit they changed the cool bos battle theme from Sonic 3, I prefer S&K's knuckles' theme though). And th egraphics... I think Sonic 3 looks damn good, maybe a bit gritty, but in no way worse overall than Sonic 2 or Sonic 1. (although, in context, I'd have to say sonic 2 on SMS probably looks the best -in the context of the hardware limitations)

One other comment on the SA games... I hear complaints from reviewers about problematic camera control, but it's perfectly fine IMO, and a LOT better than SM64, especially SA2.

NHL Hocky on the Genesis is supposed to be one of the best sports titles for it, more apealing to *non sports games* than most, kind of like NBA Jam in that respect, I guess.

I like Sonic 1 and 2 on SMS muuuuuch more than Sonic 1 and 2 on MD/Genny, MD Sonic 1 is ok, but Sonic 2 is tedium if anything more. Sonic3(&K) kicks ass of all.

I find Eliminate Down, an STG famous to rival the greatness of Thunder Force IV, to be mediocre. Synth instruments don't sound as good as in TFIV (the riff guitar sounds like a weird kazoo or something), the graphics don't have as much parallax or aren't as aestetically pleasing, the difficulty is very unbalanced and if die twice you loose all your weapons and it's near impossible to regain them if you've come a few stages into the game, because it's even harder with those peashooters you start with. Also, it cost me WAAAY too much, $180 or so, while my mom got me TFIV for free when I was a kid.

Shocking truths:

I never really got into Toejam and Earl. I also whole heartily agree with Joe on the Sonic games.

Ditto. I bought the second game when it came out. Played it a few times. Love the graphics style but I got tired when I got to stage 5 or 6 or whatever and never touched it again.

Never played the first one, although it's supposed to be so much better.

I agree about the music, but the graphics are sexy.

Shocking truths:

Very true: The graphics in Sonic 1 and 2 looked MUCH better than in Sonic 3. Sonic 3 looks somewhat 'American' (i.e. like a game that was developed by Sega of America) while STI was only involved with the music.

Sonic 3 however was the first cartridge based Sonic game that Rieko Kodama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rieko_Kodama) wasn't involved in, which perhaps does explain the different art style. She was working on Phantasy Star IV (http://info.sonicretro.org/Reiko_Kodama) at that time.

Jina Ishiwatari (http://info.sonicretro.org/Jina_Ishiwatari) was another Sonic 1 & 2 designer not involved with Sonic 3.

I think that Sonic & Knuckles does look a lot more like Sonic 1 & 2 than Sonic 3 btw. Seems to me that they noticed what went wrong with Sonic 3 and tried to get back to the modern 'hand drawn CG' art style of the previous games.

Just get the VGA version with mp3 music and play it on your pc with ScummVM,
the only reason anyone would want to play Sega CD Monkey Island would be so they could say that they played it on original hardware,
if you're gonna emulate you might as well play the superior VGA version.

Agreed. Though Sonic 1 has the most polished, dreamy, trippy special stages.

I really need to try the 8-bit games more too.

I've played some on Game Gear. I'd avoid the 8-bit Sonic 2, but Sonic 1 is great, and Sonic Chaos is real nice. There's a stage just like Emerald Hill from Genesis Sonic 2. Sonic has the spin dash PLUS the peel-out from Sonic CD, and you can play as Tails and fly too.

I can't really fault the game for not letting you exploit punch timing. I still consider SoR2 to be the finest beat 'em up ever developed exclusively for consoles. Hell, I'd rate it was one of my top 3 games of all time.

Considering the quality of most other MD shmups, I understand what you mean. But they're good games.

MUSHA was released in 1990 btw, and judging by its graphics and sound it could as well have been released in 1993 or even 1995 and would still have blown away 95% of all the games in other genres.

Hell, it took Technosoft two years to catch up with Thunder Force IV.

Shocking Truths.. I have an extreme dislike for the Phantasy Star series,

PS1 was cool with it being on SMS and all,
but after that we got PS2 which looked almost exactly like the SMS version,
and we got PS3 which is just an abomination in itself,
and then we got PS4 which came late in the life of the Genesis but still looks like an 8bit game!
(and wtf is up with that PSO game? so its only about leveling up? just grinding and no story at all?)

Snes got Secret of Mana and Breath of Fire and Lufia and Chrono Trigger,
And the Sega got crap isometric rpg's!

RAGE!

I was very surprised at Barver Battle Saga to be honest, it showed that good looking RPG's were possible on the Genesis.

Ultrashocking truth:

Even when I think of myself as a great sega genesis fan and I love too much sonic 1 and I love many classic games for the sega genesis, I was dissapointed when I saw sonic2. I was hoping for more. The colours and graphics dont look as good as sonic 1 and that also goes for the music. Even sonic 2 is a fun game it is not the "sonic 2" that I was waiting for.

For me, Sonic 3 was better than sonic 2 but no so great as sonic 1.

And I dont liked me landstalker also :daze:

I missed playing Landstalker in 1993, & picked it up in 2000 & couldn't get into it at all.

**My shocking truth (can't believe I'm saying this on a Sega-16 site) is that I believe Gunstar Heroes is just a wee bit overrated.
It's a fun game especially 2 player, but it wouldn't even rank it in my top 20 Genesis games.
Again, it probably would have helped if I played it first when it came out and not in 2000 when I bought it.

Landstalker's controls are terrible (which is why I never got into playing it), Golden Axe 3 is awesome, Sonic 2 was exactly what I expected (although I was incredibly dissapointed that the beta stages didn't make it into the final game!!! :( ), and Phantasy Star IV has more class than any SNES RPG combined.

Hmm, I think it looks great on the SMS on youtube videos and in fusion, from what I've played I like it, but I know it's hit and miss. Sonic 1 looks a bit blander graphics wise IMO. No oppinion on Chaos yet though.

The GG versions crop a LOT of the screen though, from 256x224 to 160x144.

I don't remember much if any slowdown in Genesis Out Run. Play the Saturn version. It's better than the arcade... it has an option to run at 60fps whereas the arcade version (and therefore MAME) wimps out at 30fps. Why? Because they are super weak! :)

I've actually finished Traysia from start to end.
But HOW did you accomplish this? I couldn't quite figure out what was going on. The scrolling was so herky-jerky it hurt my eyes. I don't think I even managed to figure out how to get out of the first town. I do not understand why it would be so difficult for the programmers to implement smooth scrolling. Doesn't the Genesis scroll via hardware? If so, doesn't that mean they'd have to write a special routine just to make it scroll worse? I can understand the 3DO scrolling like ass in Gex, but the Genesis? C'mon, whoever made Traysia!

That's because there really aren't any definitive racing games on Genesis. The only good racing game I can think of that is on a 2D Sega system is Sonic Drift 2.

. . . Outrun, Road Rash, Top Gear, Super Monaco GP, Super Hang On, Test Drive II, Race Drivin'?

^Super Hang-On is awesome. Even if it pales in comparison to the Arcade version. :)

didnt they port outrun to the 32x arcade perfect?

shocking truths: never played castlevania bloodlines and i just played gunstar heroes for the first time the other day and absolutely did not understand what was so great about it. its definitely got charm but ive got to pull the overrated card!

Add the Micro Machines series to that list. MM96 = one of the best ever multiplayer games, and easily one of the best MD titles, too. Denying this is heresy ;)

Shocking truths:

I don't enjoy Toejam & Earl either (no, I never owned it in the 90s, and I can't understand what all the fuss is about now, and don't find the co-op enjoyable). The sequel is just... ok. I did used to enjoy Ready, Aim, Tomatoes though :D

Still don't like Ristar. Yes, it's all very pretty. And yes, I know the fact that he headbutts everything to death should probably endear the character to me a little. But Ristar is still essentially just a reject Sega-mascot, and I've never found him or his game interesting enough to bother playing it all the way through. It makes me yawn.

I find Thunder Force IV overrated, too - not sure why, I just find it boring, and always switch it off & play better shmups instead. :| On the back of that, I've not bothered to play TFII / III much either.

I do quite like the 32x though. (Are these admissions shocking truths, or guilty pleasures? :p)

Not so shocking: I don't like the Game Gear

Shocking truth: The final boss in BK3 is easier than the 1st boss (if you know the final boss' pattern).
