View Full Version : 32X does it supercede the Genesis when it comes to outs?

Question about the ins/outs of this unit. I looked it up on Wiki and it said that it does Stereo out... so I'm assuming that when I plug this into my Model 1 non TMSS Genesis, I will use the outs on the 32X??? Or am I still limited to the mono audio out of the Genesis?

Is there a Composite Stereo Audio/Video RCA plug out (3 way) on the 32X that supercedes the outs on the Genesis?

The reason I ask is because my seller has a Model 1 in great shape but it's stock... and I'm wondering if I should get him to mod the out so I can have a 3 way RCA out or if I should simply get a 32X for that purpose... if the 32X in fact has that 3 way out.

Any help with this is appreciated,

THANKS

Using a model 1 you can either (as you say) modify it for stereo out (which is mostly done by taking the pin outs from the headphone jack is the easiest way). Or you can use a stereo 3.5mm headphone jack to stereo RCA plug adaptor lead. You plug the 3.5mm plug into the headphone socket and the audio goes to the tv/stereo. The 32X provides video ONLY. The audio on the 32X is a straight bypass ie: the audio in and audio out pins are directly joined and simply "pass through" the 32X on it's journey to your TV/Stereo.

You could always add a Sega CD as well as/instead of the 32X and get stereo out via RCA jacks on the Sega CD. You'll need the mixing cable to run from the headphone jack of the Genesis to the audio in on the Sega CD but that's easy since it's just a 3.5mm stereo male/male cable. A good Sega CD purchase would include the original Sega mixing cable anyway.

Sega CD is the easiest way to get stereo outs from a Gen 1. And, yes, you still get stereo out when running just Genesis carts.

You need the mixing cable for the CD witht the model 1, unlike model 2 which goes straight to the CD's audio.
So if you don't have that mixing cable, it's easiest to just use the 1/8" phono to stereo RCA y-cable.

Thanks guys for the input! I want to do the Stereo mod then... the least amount of conversion is going to equal the best sound quality so the Mod sounds like the best bet to me. :o

There's no mod required, just get a male 1/8" phono (headphone jack) to stereo RCA y-cable adaptor.

(get this to directl plug it into the TV/stereo system)

OR

(with the latter, you need to use standard stereo RCA cables to connect to the adaptor as th ends are female -the advantage is you can use shorter or longer cables depending on the situation; they also tend to be cheaper, but not in this case)

That or you could just use PC speakers if you have a spare set; those use a stereo headphone jack as the standard connection.

Ahhh, cool beans: I'm dumb... I was thinking I'd have to go out of the Headphone out to some converter thingamabopper from Radioshack 'then' to RCA. That first cable is perfect...

BUT wait... doesn't the Model 1 only have an RF out and no Composite Video out???

"An A/V output, which consists of a DIN connector with composite video"

That means it has a Yellow Composite RCA out correct?

So I'd be able to use that to tv to get Composite video, and then use what you suggested out of the Heaphone out to get Stereo sound to the tv... correct? :?::D

Please excuse my dumbness :?

IMHO the 32X outputs superior composite video compared to the Samsung, and Sony chips.

I haven't used any of the other video chips though.

What you need is the patch cable from the MD1 to 32X, this you can either make or buy.

If you buy, you need the Mega Drive 2 to 32X cable AND the Mega Drive 1 to Mega Drive 2 converter. This is fairly costly. There is a fellow on this site making them (check out Sonic Bazzar), or if you are able you could make it yourself. This cable will carry the video from the Mega Drive 1 to the 32X. The Mega Drive does the background and the 32X does the sprites etc (so I am lead to believe).

You then need the 32X (MD2 AV cable is the same) cable to go from there to the TV (video), you then need the 3.5mm stereo plug to stereo Audio plug from the headphone to your audio device.

Sound is all mixed on the Genesis, and the AV patch/mixing cable simply passes it through to 32x (mono only for model 1). So get the video from the 32x AV port and audio from the headphone jack ideally. (otherwise you'll get mono)

Nope, the Genesis has an 8-pin DIN port like the SMS with RGB, mono sound, and composite video. (SMS II is the only Sega produced console I know of to have RF only -in the west, so not counting SG-1000)

In fact, Japanese Mega Drives have no onboard RF at all, and neither do any model 2s or the Genesis 3. (all use external RF modulators that plug into the AV port)

32x takes RGB from teh Genesis and mixes it with its own video and outputs its own RGB signal as well as composite.

I wouldn't get a 32x simply to improve the video signal, it's a it of a pain to get all the necessary hook-ups (especially for the model 1), so unless you actually want some 32x games, I wouldn't bother. (there are other routes for improving the genesis video, Ace has that very simple impreved composite video mod I mentioned to you in another thread, S-video, or a RGB to Component transcoder -the latter being a bit expensive)

Cool beans ^!! Thanks for that input, guys.

I was thinking about getting the 32X for a couple games, but if it's goint to be that much of a pain: I may put it off for a while.

I'm fine with going Yellow RCA out of the Model 1 to get Composite Video and out of the Headphone out to get Stereo sound to my Amp.... should work just fine.

thks for all the help, guys:o:D:o
