The popularity of the sport here is not declining but the interference with the quota system by government is a big issue. Sub standard players of color are pushed through to the provincial and national sides purely based on their skin pigmentation. It's looked as being compensation for the ills of the past. But what it actually boils down to is reverse racism, imo. Don't get me wrong, there are some wonderfully talented individuals from the black/colored townships who deserve their spot, but that quota policy is flawed in its execution.

The decline in the attendance of fans at stadiums is not just a SA thing, it's been ongoing in the Super Rugby competition for quite some time now. Some of it is economics, some of it is the overlong format and structure of the competition itself. In reality, too much of a good thing can be a negative. Too much Rugby. Plain and simple. Many people actually wait it out and hope their team gets to the latter part of the tournament before they pay and go to watch.

I love Rugby Union. Our national squad isn't what it once was but they're still respected worldwide. The All Blacks though are in a different league altogether.
