Default I went to go see Alice in Wonderland last night.

I thought it was an entertaining movie. I was skeptical at first because it was a Tim Burton film. He's done amazing work like A Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, but those were his original creations. I thought he was going to do Alice in Wonderland and just make a quick buck, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was very well put together.

I have some thoughts about the RealD-3D glasses. During the first 30 minutes of using them, it'll take you a while to understand where your attention is supposed to be focused. There's stuff in the foreground, stuff in the background, and a whole bunch of miscellanious stuff scattered throughout. On certain occasions, I'd be scanning the foreground when a subtle important event was happening in the background. After the first 30-45 minutes, I rarely had it happen again. Another thing I noticed is that the glasses take detracts from the minor details. When I took the glasses off momentarily to see the movie, I could tell it was in HD. When I put them back on, everything was darker and far less detailed.

Before the show, we had an hour to kill so I went to the arcade with my friends, and they had the House of the Dead. I didn't expect it at all. I haven't seen one of these working since I was about 7. All the arcades I've been to recently have cleared out all retro games and made way for shitty prize grabbers.

Then I had a really great idea.

Of ALL of the directors in Hollywood, Tim Burton is among the last people that would make a cash-in movie.

I saw it last night in 2D (3D was sold out, I'll probably see it again in 3D) and it certainly stood out against all of the cliche shit almost every hollywood director churns out like an assembly line. Still, I felt it could've been darker/more intense/more surreal/more abstract, but he held back to keep it "kid friendly." I just don't like the idea of a director stunting his potential (and Tim Burton's strength is his ability to make some seriously surreal shit) to broaden the audience, especially to a demographic that only encompasses such a small segment of the population (I'd say anyone 10 and up is beyond getting "too scared" by a movie). I wouldn't say he "sold out" in that regard, but I feel like it would've been better if he took it to the absolute extreme that Lewis Carroll's works tend to go.

to take a picture of a non-3D monitor through the lenses of 3D glasses? 3D glasses that produce an image no different than looking through a typical pair of sunglasses when viewing non-3D images? I don't get it. Is it also a great idea to eat cereal out of a baseball cap when a clean bowl is sitting right next to it?

I suppose you also boycott Kevin Smith films for his use of Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, himself, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, etc. repeatedly? What about James Cameron and AUHNOLD? Directors find actors they like and stick with them, I don't see it as a bad thing.

I think you're confusing him with Michael Bay, but no, Michael Bay was never welcome...

I'm w/ Iron Lizard on this. I like a lot of Tim Burton's older movies, though newer ones for me just seem OK or boring.

I have no interest in seeing this Alice in Wonderland movie. The plot looks like shit.

Cameron & Arnold: 3 movies as far as I can tell.
Kevin Smith: One or 2 movies each with his friends doing lead roles & the whole group doing cameos or a sequel.
Tim Burton: Putting Johnny Depp in the lead roll across 7 movies so far.

It IS a bad thing at this point, but not why I boycott. I boycott it because his movies tend to be shit these days. Boycott doesn't mean I won't watch it, just that I refuse to pay to see it.

well, for the record everyone, Big Fish and The Corpse Bride are the only recent Tim Burton movies I found really worth noting, but this was definitely some of his better work. I would say it's at least on par with stuff like Beetlejuice (and far beyond visually of course). If you even remotely like the source material, you'll like this movie. I am a total movie snob and I liked it.

Oh, and yes, this was better than Avatar.

I was alright with Tim Burton, until the day I realized that I hate his "style". Mostly his art style.

.You should never use anyone other name in a sentence with the name Micheal Bay already in it. Its just fucked up. How would Mr Burton feel if he heard that that? Burton made some awesome movies unfortunately I think he is starting to take a Lucaseque turn for the worst. However Bay has always sucked ass and I imagine he always will.

The Rock and Bad Boys 1/2 were tolerable, everything else is an abomination to film.

I think the problem with Burton is he's "going soft" in an Eddie Murphy kinda way. Did Tim Burton have kids? kids always seems to pussify talented people.

midpost edit: yep, fucker had kids, and now we know!
