Thumbs up Pebble Beach Golf Links

Sega has made a lot of quality sports games over the years. One genre where its efforts have been largely under-appreciated has been golf. The Genesis is chock loaded with golf games, and some of the best came from Sega itself. Case in point: Pebble Beach Golf Links, a 16-meg, four-player monster that's as easy to play as it is appealing to look at. Read our full review, and see if this one is worth heading onto the course for.

I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

That Super FX remark is out of order sir. However it is a good review and I am glad to see golf games getting covered.

Nunzio I don't think that Snes remark was out of order, he simply made a brief comparison to the SNES version and it fits fine.

Wow... this is 'the' Golf game you guys were going nuts about in that other thread for this...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXVfMPXc5sk

I stopped at 0:45... the mechanics of the game look pretty strange to me. I will say the engine looks pretty decent overall, but I wouldn't be willing to figure those mechanics out..

    (start at 1:00)

That's a Golf game! The mechanics rock
The engine is badass too... especially when you putt and the view zooms in to show the ball and hole up close.

I realize it's different strokes for different folks n all... but when I mentioned Hals HiO in the last thread and was greeted with, "you're on your own there, buddy"... I thought, man... this Pebble Beach Golf Links must be pretty badass.

sorry to say I don't share the same opinion as y'all

Nice to see other people reviewing sports games, though I utterly hated this game with most of my fervor.
Sega-16's Resident Sports Authority. Chief Heckler of the Midwest.

    Next up on the tee:
    Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing
Slam City (starring Scottie Pippen) - CD32X
    ...and more!

Firstly, Links: The Challenge of Golf. Secondly, It is hard to compare HAL Hole in One to these kinds of games. They are completely different; HAL Hole in One is like the ultimate evolution of those mini-putt games. There is no 'golfer' so it sort of feels like playing the map from Links.

To me it doesn't have enough realism, despite being highly playable. Pebble Beach Golf Links is an okay hybrid of the the map and player style games. Otherwise... bleh PGA Tour Golf 2 is even better imho.

I had a bit of fun with the Saturn version, but I think that's mostly because most other games I had sucked so hard (Johnny Bazookatone, etc.).

Regarding mini golf: I think Sega of Japan ported their Mini Putt game to Mega Drive and released it on Sega Net.

Interesting take... it's nice to hear why people like these others.

I figured so much. Honestly, I like that I don't have the view directly behind the golfer, and I loooove watching the ball fly through the air vs. these other golf games where the camera doesn't follow the ball.

    different strokes though

This is my favorite genesis golf game(technical/ease of game play). Second is Arnold Palmer(simplicity and arcade style). Actually these two games are very close. I didn't like the EA, Virgin, or Accolade golf games.

    EDIT:

I grabbed an extra cart of this for pennies and it comes up with a ram error screen? If you press start it continues to the sega screen. What does this mean? The save won't work? Doesn't it have save like sonic 3?
