Strange!
My guess is you're using an old version of the ED OS that doesn't recognize the image and hence doesn't burn/play it properly. Check for an update of the OS and update if necessary. Older versions of the OS had lots of problems with recognizing all sorts of different roms, from SMS to 32X.

Thanks for all the replies, but no luck. I've updated the os, but it still doesn't work. The cart is fairly new (manufacture date says July 2011). I've tried many different versions of the rom (.bin .gen [!] etc.), and I've tried many different consoles. No luck. Any other ideas why it's not working?

Go through all the options and try turning them on/off. Otherwise, all I can figure is you suck at finding good rom images. I had no trouble finding one that works on the first try, and so have most of the people to respond to this "issue".

Haha. It's never good to hear that I suck at something, but I have downloaded a total of ten differently labeled roms froms a wide variety of sources. After playing tons of games on this Everdrive, Phelios is the only game that doesn't work. I guess I shouldn't complain because it doesn't look like a very good game. It's just a very strange mystery to me, and I brought it up just to let the developers know if there's some kind of issue. If that rom works for everyone else, I guess I'll just let the mystery go unsolved.

It's definitely an odd problem. If other stuff also didn't work, I'd say it was the ED, but that's not the case, apparently. All I can say is WOKOMS.

Well, if you come across another dump, you could try it. If another update for the ED comes around, you might try it. Otherwise, you seem to be stuck.

    I think I know what's happening...
By your description, your Genesis is trying to use the SMS mode; that's why you see a flash and a black screen.
The problem is the header of the rom that you are trying to use. In a few cases the Everdrive MD will recognize some MD roms as SMS roms... It's the header fucking it up.

Anyway, you need the following version of the Phelios rom:
Phelios (U) [h2C].gen (just google it and you'll be already there!)

You'll probably have the same problem with the Japanese Klax rom. In such case (IDK why the heck someone would ever want that version but it may happen someday if you get drunk...):
    Klax (J) [h1C].gen

Always try all the different versions of the GoodGen roms if you have any problem with your Everdrive.

By the way, Phelios is a good little game and I like it.

Wrong, Phelios is an amazing game. Don't let the looks fool you. If you can find a working ROM for it I suggest playing it to the end.

THANK YOU, agostinhobaroners! The funny thing is that I tried every rom except that one after having no success with the [h1C] rom. So, mystery solved; it works! During my investigation, I also found that Rambo III doesn't work. There are probably several roms with this header problem. Anyway, I just played Phelios thanks to this info, and I really enjoyed it. Yay for community!

    GREAT!

I'm very happy to read that...
IMO this is the most valuable contribution that Ken gave to the Genesis/Mega Drive lovers when he created Sega-16: allow people to share information and experiences.

This tool may also help with bad checksums:

Do you think that the bad checksum is what makes the Everdrive MD identifies the rom as a SMS one?

I usually use that program that you linked when I patch the roms with some Game Genie code in other to avoid those stupid red screens (it's more practical than search for a master code). It's a very useful tool indeed.

It's possible - the problem Jeff is describing sounds kind of like the one that I had with the beta copy of SFII when I tried it on my Everdrive.

OP: Can you confirm/deny this by downloading the verified good [!] dump and the checksum utility I posted and see if it works once patched? Thanks!

I tested it right now as you said and it didn't work. It keeps recognizing the rom as a SMS one.

By the way, that program uses a file dialog that only recognizes .bin roms and the GoodGen set uses .gen as extension. But the .gen are indeed bin archives, so just rename the extension to .bin and you'll be able to use the program.

Hm, well that settles that. Thanks! Yeah, there's a .gen to .bin converter around there somewhere that does all that for you, as well.
