    Meh XDR: X-Dazedly-Ray

The Mega Drive has a ton of shooters that never saw release outside of Japan. Unfortunately, for every gem like Battle Mania 2 there is a dud like XDR: X-Dazedly-Ray. If you ever needed a game to cure insomnia, Unipacc has filled your prescription to the letter. Read our full review for more details, and trust us. It's more fun than the actual game itself.

Ugh, XDR. Easily the worst shooter on the Genesis / Mega Drive. Stinks worse than a skunk.

Nowhere near the worst. Try playing crap like Divine Sealing.

    WTF

Ahm.... Even with all its flaws, Divine Sealing is a less inept game than XDR.

You want contenders for worst to go head to head with XDR?
Try some Master of Weapon and Xenon 2 Megablast.

    Curse!
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

You must be joking? DS doesn't even have powerups.
People that think DS isn't the worst shmup must be attracted to its poor display of hentai. Which by the way, has nothing to do with anything in the game.
But I digress. XDR at least has powerups and the levels are somewhat colourful.

Divine Sealing does have power-ups, but they are score-based. Stay alive and eventually you'll be powerful enough to handle the swarms in later stages. It's much more of a rush (albeit a limited and rather unknown one because people generally give up before seeing it) than what XDR will ever be capable of providing.

I agree with you on the Hentai though. It has nothing to do with the game itself.

Master of Weapon I agree, but Xenon 2?? Seriously...?

Please tell me what you find rubbish about it then.

I have yet to find anything positive about it.

    1. Dull, slow and painful gameplay.
    2. Hit detection is one of the worst I've seen in my entire life.

No. I find it quite annoying to be honest.

Well, there's your problem. You're not supposed to get hit. Do that and you find it's better than you think..

    My 2 cents:

Curse isn't pretty. Later levels are pretty okay. Certainly playable.

Xenon 2 is horribly dated. About the only interesting thing it has going for it is the ability to scroll the screen downward. But it's playable.

Divine Sealing gets pretty challenging later on as well. That doesn't redeem it's existence. Not good, but playable; i.e., it functions.

Master Of Weapon is pure cheese. It's enjoyable in a Saturday afternoon, B-movie kinda way. And it's controls function properly.

Super Thunder Blade is darn near unplayable. The game is horrible. The controls are broken, but it's one of a handful of 3rd person shooters on the system, and a launch title at that. At least it sort of looks / sounds like a 16-bit game...

...which is more than I can say for XDR. Drab, dreary, 8-bit crap. Furthermore, XDR is so cheap with power-ups, it's an absolute chore to play. So not fun to pilot a plodding pea shooting spaceship. Maybe that's just me. Hmmm...

This game might not be the king of shmups, but please, a 2 on the review? I've played just about every shmup on the genesis including imports and this game is good for some variety even though it may not be as good as other games.

I do think master of weapon is crap, curse I actually like, xenon 2 is region locked so I didn't bother, super thunder blade I never was too good at it but my brother could beat it, diving sealing I play for other reasons, darwin is not that great, battle squadran sucks shit big time, I actually think it's fun to play earth defend(again, not best game ever).

If you want to play the worst shmups on the genesis, pick up Action52.
