Default What great games did you discover late in the game?

Whether you just missed them, had cheap parents, were too young, or were a SNES freak....whatever reason..you may have discovered some games way later through emulation or comp packs.

I kind of like this, because it gets rid of any kind of "rose colored glasses" or nostalgia, that may make you think a game is better than it was.

I missed a good bit, since I was so into the SNES(and my parents were kinda cheap).
It's kind of awesome, because it's like long lost treasure or something.

The games I got into YEARS later, were-

    Thunderforce IV
    Rocket Knight Adventures
    Gunstar Heroes
    Alien Soldier
    Dynamite Headdy
Bare Knuckle II(hard to believe, but I didn't like the first SOR, so I didn't bother with the second one)
    Bare Knuckle III
    Pulseman(hell yeah!)
    Shinobi III
    Ristar

What's really weird, is even though I was a subscriber to EGM, I had no idea Shinobi III or Gunstar Heroes even existed! Now, I was a big fan of TF III, but i'm guessing the name change(Lightening Force) is what made me miss that one.

All awesome games. What about you guys?

3/4 of what I've collected in the last 2+ years is "me being late to the Gaming World" in general.

Lightening Force (Just played it the other day for the first time...holy shit.)
    Alien Soldier
    Monster World IV
M.U.S.H.A. (Played on a Dreamcast Sega Emulator for the first time...ugh. Awesome game, own a cart of it now.)
    Shin Megami Tensei (SNES)

I started collecting again after a 10 year leave, about 5 years ago I dug out my old megadrive and played a 2 player on Streets of rage with the misses and kinda remembered I liked it

I had the usual Urban Strike, Sonic, Sonic & Knuckles etc etc but none of the newer stuffs so I started looking up well rated games or ones that rocked the hardware!

and then I decided to ONLY collect the games I missed first time round, or the games I wanted to play but never could afford!

so I started building up stuff like Castlevania, Dynamite, Rocket Night Adventures, Pulsestar etc.

Its mostly the RPGs that elluded me.

Just played TFIV? Wow. Well, it's awesome, isn't it?

I actually bought MUSHA when it came out, and had it all these years. Since I was pretty anal back then also, it's in GREAT shape. Sometimes it pays to be OC.

Rocket Knight, and Earthworm Jim - Until a few weeks ago
The Silent Hill series - until months after SH4 released
Super Metroid - until the Wii VC version released
Jet Set Radio Future - Loved the Dreamcast original, but the original Xbox was simply to hideous for me to buy for one game. Now that I have a 360 (that's much easier on the eyes) and I finally started playing it this week.

Many PS2 games I didn't play for years on account of me becoming a Nintendo fanboy after the demise of the Dreamcast.....until GT4 released. I was getting into cars big time and GT4 was a good fix.

I'm also still missing tons of SNES games since I was a Genesis kid back then.

Umm all of them? Except the few Sega PC games like Garfield, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. (Genesis version is better anyway, not of garfield)

Actually you could say most of the SNES games I *discovered* late in the game so to speak since we got ours christmas of 1996.
6 days older than SEGA Genesis

Quite a few, as far as the Genesis is concerned. I didn't play Streets of Rage 2 until I got the Sega Smash Pack for DC, and I didn't play SoR 3 or several other games until I got Sonic's UGC last year. Vectorman 2, Ristar, Shinobi 3, Golden Axe 2 and 3, Comix Zone... just about half of that entire collection I had missed out on, maybe more.

What really kills me, though, is that I didn't even discover the magic of Sonic 3 and Knuckles until I got Sonic Jam. I always thought locking Sonic 3 onto Sonic and Knuckles simply allowed you play as Knuckles is Sonic 3, like the Sonic 2 lock-on. One day, out of boredom, I went ahead and played S3&K, got through Launch Base, and Jesus tittyfucking Christ. At least it was only a few years after the original came out.

I hope you emulate, because Bare Knuckle III is definitely a better version of SOR III. And don't forget about Pulseman. Of course, that's on VC now..'bout time too.

And yeah, to me Sonic 3 and Knuckles is THE game. I don't even look at them as separate games(they weren't supposed to be, originally).

Hmm... this would be a long list!

    Gain Ground
    Rocket Knight Adventures
    Streets of Rage 2
Sonic 3 and Knuckles (never did the lock-on when it came out, just on Sonic 2)
    Contra Hardcorps
    Castlevania games on PS1/Saturn
    Mystic Warriors (arcade)
    1942 Counter Strike (arcade)
    Sonic Adventure
Ecco the Dolphin CD 1/2 (I played the first Genesis game, but it was too hard)
    Gunstar Heroes

... and that is enough to list. The edited version of Streets of Rage 3 can also eat dicks.

Well, I could write pages and pages here, I played my first Wonderboy/monsterland game fairly recently, and I LOVE the series now.

More recently, it wasn't a game, but a controller. I love Daytona USA, bought the Saturn to play it, and it was awesome, but it didn't control like the arcade. A few years later I found the steering wheel for sale and bought it, tried it once and hated it, and put it in storage. Since then I have longed for the arcade experience, hoping for a great Dreamcast port, then Xbox, then XBLA, and it never happened.

Last week I fixed my Saturn, and as I was pulling the various accessories out of storage I grabbed the wheel. I was going to clean it up and give it one more chance, if I wasn't going to use it I would sell it. It took me a few races to get used to it as it is VERY sensitive, but now it's awesome! I finally have what feels 90% like the original Daytona game! And to think I've been sitting on it for what, 12 years?

Oh yeah, believe me, that little tidbit has been impossible to miss around here. I haven't yet played BK3 as I can't program my flash cart and am otherwise lacking the dough to buy a copy (or a repro), but I do like SoR3 a lot as it is. I haven't played Pulseman either, but I also don't have a Wii for VC stuff. Honestly, I'm about done with emulating now anyway.

Fuckin' A, man. I don't get why Sega seems ao intent on hiding the fact that they're one game.

Kaboom! for Atari 2600. I bought the system and about 40 cartridges including Kaboom! in 1991 but did'nt have a set of paddles.
I finally got a set in 2004 and Kaboom! is now one of my all time favorite games.
