Columns III 5-Player mode

How does this work exactly?

To my understanding all of the Genesis/MD multi-taps only allowed 4 controllers.
Did someone have to share a controller a la Micro Machine's 8-player mode?

THe multitap goes into only one of the controller plugs. The 5th player would be in the open port

I thought of that for a second, but then dismissed it as I thought both ports were required in the different signaling / possibly multiplexing they were doing.
