I love Genesis Shadow Dancer. The arcade version is quite lackluster. The arcade music is AWFUL and the graphics aren't so hot, either. I'm glad they changed it. The Statue of Liberty elevator music rocks. The box art to this game is HORRIBLE! It is almost worth owning the Japanese version simply for the (much) better box art and for no other reason. I don't see why money was spent commisioning new, often horrible box art when the box art in Japan was readily available and quite awesome. I demand an explanation for this!

I think the box art is kinda cool... or would be for a completely different kind of game.

How would you guys rate the 3 shinobi titles?
Revenge>III>Shadow Dancer

I agree, RoS is the tops and Shinobi 3 is a close second. I did enjoy Shadow Dancer though.

I wouldn't be comfortable comparing the three like that since SD is more like the arcade original.

S3>RoS for me. RoS is too much trial & error and I hate the last level. Also, in 3 you're actually agile and flexible like a ninja should be so you don't feel inhibited (is this the right word? I mean you feel clumsy and constrained) when there's a lot going on around you.

I played Shadow Dancer yesterday as well. And the day before. Shadow Dancer loves me more than it loves you. And vice versa.

I always though it was in this order, IMO:

Revenge of Shinobi
Shinobi 3
Shadow Dancer

RoS, IMO is one of the best ninja games of all time. The game was much more ambitious that Shinobi 3, and the game was so satisfying when ever you beated a level and/or the boss that followed. The movie refrences had a nice charm, and the game was amazing at the time.

Shinobi 3 is a great game, but while Shinobi moves with much more finesse the skill and learning curve is pretty much gone, which made Revenge of Shinobi so much better.

Shadow Dancer is a fun game too, but way too arcadey for my tastes. Seems like a knock off of Revenge of Shinobi.

Shadow Dancer a knock-off of Revenge of Shinobi? Not quite. Shadow Dancer is based more on the original arcade game Shinobi which Revenge most decidedly was not. In fact Revenge had next to nothing to do with the original Shinobi. Shadow Dancer was the first time we got true Shinobi game play at home (the Master System version doesn't count). It is a fantastic game and I play it often. For me, it is:

Shadow Dancer (Genesis)
Revenge of Shinobi (first run with Godzilla, etc)
Shinobi (arcade)
Shinobi III
Shinobi (Master System)
Shinobi (PC Engine)
Shinobi Legions (Saturn)
Shinobi (NES)
Shinobi (Game Gear versions)
Shadow Dancer (arcade.. ug!)
