System Wars (Genesis VS. SNES) - Part 1

Upon getting my games typed up the other night into Excel I thought to myself that it would be cool to start a thread that took two systems (any Console or PC) with 5-10 games for each and pit them against each other. The question is which system of 5-10 games would you take and why. Picture yourself stranded on a deserted island or you're off to heaven... either way, you can only pick one system with it's 5-10 games to take with you for eternity.

I figured if this took off well enough, that we could have a new one each week. Now, these lists of 5-10 do not have to simply include the 'greats' of each respective system... they can include some Classics along with some that were unheard of or any combo thereof. Also, for the sake of adding some color to these threads, I figured whoever starts the thread can ONLY pick games that he owns in his own Collection so that should keep things interesting.


I'll start this one off with Genesis VS. SNES:

Genesis

1. Sonic the Hedgehog
2. Streets of Rage
3. Bio Hazard Battle
4. Kid Chameleon
5. Road Rash

SNES

1. Super Mario World
2. Final Fight
3. Earth Defense Force
4. Donkey Kong Country
5. F-Zero

As you can see, both systems have two quality Platformers, a Fighter, a Shooter, and a Racing game picked out for them. With these choices presented: which do you pick? Wow, I'm having hell picking one of these.


I would definitely pick Streets of Rage because that series just 'does' it for me... and this is SO hard to decide because the Final Fight series 'does' it for me as well. Earth Defense Force is a badass shooter so I'd have to go with that and I'm going to choose Kid Chameleon over Donkey KC because the Chameleon game has so much promise imo. F-Zero over Road Rash... easily because F-Zero is one of my favorite Console Racers.

Maaaan, this is tough.... I loooove Super Mario World... but I think I'm going to have to go with Sonic on this one.

I was just playing this the other night... spent about 30 mins with it... it was great: solid feel, fantastic graphics, nice difficulty level, and cool maps.

The slowdown was pretty lame but honestly... I'm starting to think of the slowdown (that I see predominately in Shooters, and mostly on the SNES vs. the Genny) as an aid to really tough sections of these games

DKC is a badass platformer for sure... I feel kind of bad choosing Kid Chameleon over it... especially considering I don't have a lot of experience with Kid Chameleon. I have to give it to KC because it's got the whole 'different hat = different super power' thing going on and the level design looks like it's going to be a very interesting ride. Well, the same can be said for DKCs level design as well.

+1 for Genesis. I've always hated the SNES because they butchered every good game ported to that console. I have two words for anyone who likes the SNES and that's "Mortal Kombat".

lol yea, just like that, I find that there are only 2 Sonic games that would give Mario a decent competion, and neither one is on the Genesis(Sonic CD, and SA2).

Yea F-Zero is awesome, It's just a shame there Isn't an erase save file option sigh(so you can replay it from scratch), other then that It's great.

Yea DKC has a good lv design as well, especially when you count the Bonus lv, and such on top of what's already good lv design.

Wow gee, I wonder what console is gonna come out on top, on a Sega board.
But I'll bite. If you go by sales the SNES wins hands down, since all of the SNES games listed sold more than their Genesis counterparts and could therefore be considered "more popular".
If you go by opinion on these boards, the Genesis wins hands down, since nobody is going to vote on SNES games.

SNES 4 - Genesis 1

I'd take the SNES based on these picks. I really like Road Rash, but I like F-Zero more. Likewise with Sonic 1. SoR and Final Fight was a tough one, but just KNOWING that the Sega CD version of Final Fight is so much better makes playing the SNES one very hard for me. It's still fun, but it feels like making love to a woman with one breast... something is just missing.

This is the most biased place for a Genesis Vs. SNES debate.

I prefer the Genesis, but only by a medium margin.

The Saturn is my all-time favorite system personally.
