Default Doom 32X didn't have to sound bad

    AT ALL..

I took the task of trying to mimick the YM2612 specs on my Yamaha DX7, and programmed patches that, within the spec of the 2612, make the E1M1 sound awesome...

Now I have no idea how I'd go about the percussions, so that was just software drumsets.. I used a total of THREE FM channels, 4 operators each..

    http://www.mediafire.com/file/ldizwhbyj4m/e1m1.mp3

(I'm fairly sure you can do tremolo on YM2612, so I did that for the right channel lead, just for effect)..

SO much better than what the Doom 32X shipped with, and I probably used less FM channels than they did too..

I'd be happy to share the FM matrix I used for the leads and bass if anyones interested.

Give me a map in Doom and I'll reproduce it in FM properly with 2612 limits..

    E1M5: http://www.mediafire.com/file/m51qzlo2tmv/e1m5.mp3

That didn't turn out much better than the 32X version.. 5 channels, 4 ops each..

PS: I use the MIDI port on the DX7 to feed the music data instead of actually trying to play it.. Each channel is recorded individually (since it can only play one patch at a time), and then using a mixer, line the tracks up..

I could go either way on either one of these redone versions. I really like e1m1 here though. Generally speaking I haven't heard a chip or remix version of that tune that I've like much, but the audio depth on this one is superb. It certainly solves the flatulence accusation handily.

As it was a lot of the tracks sounded fairly competitive with id's Adlib rendition, some better, but it could have been a lot better... Give it up to GEMS, of course. (and the convenience of direct midi support)

Hell, the Soundblaster version could have sounded a lot better if id had supported more than the lowest common denominator OPL2 of the Adlib/SB1/2, even supporting the dual OPL2 of the pro would have been nice, lest alone the OPL3 specificaly.
That and they don't seem to go past the 8-bit mono sound blaster samples too, no soundblaster pro stereo let alone SB-16 44 kHz 16-bit stereo.

Hold up a second, are you emulating the 32X audio, and remaking the Doom 32X soundtrack with a better sound?

Because comparing the sounds coming out of Doom 32X to something like Temo 32X, Doom 32X sounds like poopy. I believe it sounds that way because it was either rushed or the programmers were lazy as shit.

It was definately rushed. When you beat it, it goes to a C:\ prompt, lol.

Isn't it only the shareware version's levels anyway? It's pretty sad, but if they didn't release it at launch it probably never would have been released.

Not if you start from Level 1.

    @OP

Doesn't sound too shabby. I've always liked this one though:

Doom for the 32x featured 8 levels from Episode 1 (shareware) and 8 from Episode 2. All 9 levels from Episode 3 are absent in Doom 32x.

That's just an easter egg. The 32X in no way is running DOS.

A little while back, a conversion of the Jaguar Doom wad was put in Doom 32X and released. You might look for that.

Wasn't there a reverse crash cymbal on e1m5?

Yes, but I couldn't figure out how to do it on FM.. (I didn't bother do the software drumset, which would have made it easier.. these clips were a proof of concept that ID software got lazy and didn't take advantage of 4op FM chips..
