The 32X game is usually 30fps, with some dips to 20fps, the same as the Jaguar and PC version.

Ok. Maybe the emulation isn't accurate.

The PC version ran extremely fluid on my 486 DXII-66. I am not sure how you come to the conclusion that it ran at 20-30fps.

Edit: Here's the game on a 486 laptop:

The 32X version is closer to the game on a 386 with 33 MHz if I remember correctly. However, at that time, in late 1994, the first Pentium PCs became affordable for the average middle class family (at least here in Germany, my father had a P-75 in 1994), so the 32X port seemed like a huuuge step back in comparison.

    Doom (32X) cheats

All weapons: Press A, B, C, X, Y, and Z simultaneously while the game is paused.

Full ammunition: Press A, C, Mode, and Up simultaneously while the game is paused.

I was referring to the average PC at the time, and my modern Dual Core running Dosbox. I tried every tweak online and the game still stutters in framerate. Back in the day I only owned an old 68020 Macintosh with 4MB of RAM, and that thing ran Doom II like a slideshow. Among the console versions, the only version that is consistently faster than the 32X game is the PS1 version.

Guys, I seriously don't know what "low-resolution" means, and it's a complaint about this game. Someone please explain / confirm what low-res means.

I assume it means the pixels are too huge and blocky right???

Would it have been possible for the 32x to push the game with smaller pixels???

DosBox is shit. Use Zdoom and see the difference.

I needed to capture the video without enhancements, but I had hoped I could have gotten the thing to run consistently above 30FPS.

Ecco, the low resolution means as you say, that the sprites and textures get blockier up close than in other versions. I think I've seen Chilly say that the game is rendering in the 150xXXX range even though the display resolution is 320x224. The SNES game is even lower resolution both internal rendering and display. The 3DO, Jaguar, PS1 and Saturn games are all significantly higher resolution.

Never mind. I didn't read your last post properly.

Every version of Doom I'd been lucky enough to witness for moments at a time before getting the 32X version ran between 1/3 - 1/2 the framerate of the 32X version. And that was hardware which cost $1000+. They also didn't have sound cards (only bleep bloop sounds) and the sound of Doom 32X was all the more impressive. For $250 at the time, you'd be lucky to find any used PC's and you'd be lucky if they could run Wolfenstein 3D at all.

I never played Doom before the 32X version and never had trouble aiming or anything else gameplay related.

I think that you can't rate this version poorly without rating Doom overall poorly. The gameplay is still there and the visuals are more than intact. Any extra content that PC users were familiar with was irrelevant. Unless Doom isn't really a good game in the first place. This is a much greater port than the SFII (and most other arcade to) home ports were and people aren't so harsh on them.

It is a decent port, but I still can't get over how stingy the auto aim feature is in this version. Also the 3rd episode is my favorite from Doom, so I can't forgive this port for not having that either. oh well.

It would have been good if the 32X had been supported for another year or so, if Doom II or Ultimate Doom was eventually released it would have made a great comparison to the launch game. 3MB Doom 32X versus 4-6MB Ultimate Doom or whatever. I wonder if Chilly is right and they would have started including RAM in the carts too.

There is a 24 level hack for the 32X doom, but I don't know how to run it.

I thought it was a lot of fun. Coming from just having a Genesis and SegaCD, it was really a great game. The only comparisons I really had at the time were Zero Tolerance and Corporation (I didn't get Bloodshot until later). Doom on 32X was amazing in comparison, though Zero Tolerance was still cool for the two player mode. Not long after I finished the game on 32X, I got to play it networked on my boss' PC network and it seemed very much the same to me at the time. Of course, I was playing it on one of his old computers so it had to run in at least as small of a screen as the 32X just to run at a playable speed. I was actually better at the PC game than everyone else except my boss, too, even though the rest owned the PC game, too. It was cool to be able to say that I had only played it before on Sega!

Yeah, I think I have to bump up the score, because I beat this today on "hurt me plenty" and it was fairly fun.
However, I still ended up wasting a lot of ammo in some situations due to poor hit detection on enemies.
